Offseason Positional Analysis (C)

We previously analyzed the point guard position, the two guard slot, small forward, and power forward. Today, we wrap things up with the center position.

J.J. Hickson was frequently dominant in the low post. Unfortunately, none of the other players on the roster had played with this style of center, at least since high school (if at all). Once opponents figured out that Hickson must be stopped at all costs, triple teams soon followed. Hickson struggled at passing out of them, and the rest of the team struggled moving without the ball to take advantage of playing 4-on-2.

Well, that won’t happen this year. Hickson is with LeBron and the Cavs, and I don’t expect anyone to triple team Big Ben (who would destroy such a strategy with his passing ability anyway). Without the Hickson crutch, perhaps other guys will step up and quit watching so much. Maybe offensive flow will return. That needs to happen sooner rather than later, if the Pack wants to avoid repeating as a 12 seed in the ACCT.

Ben McCauley can be an above-average player in the ACC. We saw it in 2006-07, even if he did sort of hit the wall in February. Ben showed toughness, great offensive instincts, a solid midrange jumper, and a deceptively quick first step along the baseline. We saw some toughness last year, but very little quickness or athleticism (save for his last-second dunk to beat Wake Forest). McCauley was sick early in the year, then struggled with his role. He was never comfortable playing the 4 alongside Hickson (despite seemingly being physically ideal for such a role), and didn’t fare much better when he shifted back to the 5 when J.J. took a breather.

Like Costner, McCauley should benefit from starting over with a clean slate. Unlike Costner, his dedication and work ethic have never been in question – and he has no real competition for the starting job. When he takes a rest, some combination of Costner, Horner, and Smith will have to man the lowpost and hope for the best. The ACC is not overflowing with true centers, so hopefully mismatches will be kept to a minimum. To be all-ACC caliber, Ben needs to regain his lost step, and use improved agility to be a better rebounder (he has always struggled in this area) and defender (he has never been more than average in this area). He also needs to regain confidence in his jumper and his passing.

Who should start? Ben McCauley – the only real center on the roster. If he were to get hurt, I would expect Costner and Smith to start and jointly work the lowpost.

What should the rotation be? McCauley needs to play 30 minutes per game, especially in ACC play. If Big Ben spends too much time on the bench, I would expect Costner, Smith, and/or Horner to get into pretty serious foul trouble. However, the offense should be fine, regardless.

Position Grade: B-

Just to add, What separates the really great players is their inner desire combined with any athletic/physical advantages that they may have come by naturally. I think that contesting and not EVER giving an opponent the easy shot, and that every player should ALWAYS be fighting for position and not ever giving ANYTHING away. But to me that’s nothing special at all, and doing those things with or without the basketball in your hand is just as fundamental to playing the game of basketball anywhere and anytime, as the basketball is itself.

I expect Big Ben to get some of that toughness back into the lineup. Not to the extent that we saw years ago with Shackleford and Washburn, but maybe more of a Gugliotta effect. Good luck Big Ben!!! Sidney Lowe needs to go after some Deron Washington/Gerald Henderson type of players. These guys will play you physical if you try to show them up, just look at Tyler Hansbrough to see what he is capable of. Ask Greg Paulus how well Deron Washington will use his size & attitude if you try to drive in on him. That is what NC state needs to regain its respect in the ACC. We don’t need anymore basketball players, we need some BALLERS!!

in response to the possibility of landing Wall and robopack’s post…Coach Lowe was aware of Brown’s commitment for some time before it was made public. i think we have a better shot at Wall than Favors at this point. for those who listened to the Word of God coach’s interview…he said that John was basing his decision on who would be the best head coach for him to develop blah blah blah. it struck me as i listened that NC State and coach Lowe seemed ideal.

btw, if we landed both favors and wall we would have the best center and p.g. in the country and could contend for….they are both tremendous talents. imagine mike beasley and derek rose on the same team.

Thanks Redfred, someone finally recalling the days that State had some respect in the ACC. It is all in part to the toughness that these two guys brought to NC state

    Shack & Wash that is.

^^concur, but I think Howlie was comparing Tracy Smith to Charles Barkley not Charles Shackelford. Speaking of that, have you ever heard Barkley mention playing with Shackelford? He said the Nets told him they were going to draft, “Shaq”, and he ended up with “our” “Shack”!! not Shaquille.

Talk about a contrast!!! At least he got a shaqck! Just not the one who would go on to win NBA championships.

Wait, there is still some confusion here. I’m pretty sure that Howlie was really comparing Tracy Smith to Lorenzo “Charles”, not “Charles” “Shack”leford, or “Shaq”uille O’Neill.

    And the saga continues….

What we need is a Charles Barkley type of player. Someone who will get in your grill and get you frustrated, and even fight if it means earning some respect. We have too many pansies on our current roster. I really wish Sidney would use his greates attribute which is his “urban” background and get some dang ballers up in here. NC State’s starting 5 should contain players such as this. His son, Deron Washington, Chris Washburn, Ryan Reid, Ben Wallace, Ron Artest, Dennis Rodman, Bill Laimbeer, Isaiah Thomas. These are the type of guys who will win at all costs. We ALL know that Sidney can get these type of guys into our program, and change our feeble ways, and bring some Mojo back into our university/basketball spirit. Let’s go boys!

You could even add in a little Latrell Sprewell into the mix.
