New Wolf Statue at Carter-Finley, but no new restrooms for half the stadium

Wolf

Aesthetic improvements continue at Carter-Finley. As the picture below indicates (taken from this source), there is a new addition to the wolves’ den tunnel leading from the Murphy Center to Wayne Day Field.

I like it. I’m all for improvements like this that add some pizzaz to the place. I think I would like it more if the statue was set closer to the goal post thereby protruding a little further from the tunnel generating the appearance of the wolf running ahead of the pack. I’m not sure many people will be able to see it set back in the tunnel like that.

The real question continues to be why the east side concourse is yet to have gotten its renovation of upgraded restrooms and concession areas? It is unacceptable that everyone in the stadium has shelled out money for lifetime rights but only half of the stadium has been upgraded with new amenities. The good people on the east side who already brave the elements to sit in the sun deserve improved restrooms and amenities as much as anyone.

Of course, it is no surprise that the side of the stadium where the students sit is the side that has not yet been upgraded. Hell, the administration can’t even figure out a way to get the students into the stadium in time for the games, they surely could care less about providing them adequate facilities.

Related to this point, a poster on Pack Pride made an interesting observation when he/she asked about North Carolina’s building code regarding the minimum number of urinals/water closets for a 60,000 seat stadium?

Just another example of our AD/administration’s emphasis on fluff rather than substance IMO!

The wolf is pretty badass, but it should be moved forward.

Unacceptable about the bathrooms… but were you surprised?

I like the cave look (maybe that’s old). Now, for home field advantage, they should put the visiting team in an actual cave instead of a locker room. With real wolves.

From a football standpoint, I don’t want a solid statue close enough to the field to be an obstacle for a sprinting player focused on the ball. They could have made it made it taller to clear the line of sight on the wall, though. It looks made for TV.

I’m assuming there is an accompanying memo to our football team concerning the “tradition” of petting the wolf or something similar after every touchdown?

What is it called now? The Wolves’ Den, maybe?

Another statue of a wolf and no other places to mark your territory; what is this world coming to?

Looks like the same material that my old He-Man Castle Grayskull was made out of.

i like that TOB isnt having them walk trhough the stands any more. that was stupid.

Also, has anyone heard the uni’s may be diferent this yr? I hear semi- retro as in 2001-2003 era. losing the pro uni look. they have a block S on the back above the name and some sort of logo at the bottom of the V neck

My seats are on the East side and I have long felt like a victim of a Fowler/Stafford motivated separate but equal policy. Jim “Status quo” Oblinger will be hearing from my lawyer soon.

Just wait till a player runs long on a TD catch and hits that wolf in stride. After the lawsuit that won’t have money for anymore water closets

Of course, it’s a matter of subjective personal taste, but I think it looks pretty stupid.

Could have been raised up on a 4′ high base, with the front of the base made of the same ‘cushionie’ material thats on the side walls [that are pretending to be rocks]. That way, the players still could still reach up for the magic ‘good luck’ touch along its torso or head while running on the field.
I know it’s recessed back from the field for safety reasons, but as the captains come out and the team begins pressing to take the field, the wolf will be covered, and after the team FIRST begins to run out, the statue is out of view. A few feet of elevation could have helped.

That said, what’s there is an improvement over the ‘mini-me’ wolf statue of last year. Maybe after this year’s tenfold improvement over last year, we’ll get ANOTHER bigazz 40′ wolf put there…

  14. StateFans 08/05/2008 at 4:09 PM #

Why is it recessed for saftey reasons?

If you put it right behind the goal posts then wouldn’t the goal posts serve as a buffer for it?

a pack of wolves(ie, several wolves) in a running motion woulda been a lot cooler

that thing looks like its about to drop a deuce on my front yard, and that aint coll at all

I just hope we finally start winning games at home again.

I like the wolf, but it does need to be raised higher, maybe looking like it’s howling from the edge of a rocky cliff or something. Speaking of the rocks though, I think that maybe myself and a few friends could have done a better job of making those sta-puff stones look a little more realistic. From what I can see in the photo the right side actually looks more like drapes, that supposed to be rock? Maybe it’s going to be a symbol for the new “Stone Curtain Defense”. They are trying up there though, and to cut them some slack, I’ll bet it all looks great, in person, especially from way,..waaay, over on the other side of the stadium.

  18. redfred2 08/05/2008 at 4:42 PM #

With the new photo, and on second thought, that wolf/wild boar looks just a little too “healthy” for my tastes. Maybe he’d be more at home at the RBC.

  19. EverettBeez 08/05/2008 at 4:53 PM #

Where is the wolf’s little sailor hat? How can it be a realistic mascot with out the sailor hat, and sweater for that matter.

  20. EverettBeez 08/05/2008 at 4:55 PM #

I can’t say I like it, like the idea, but the execution . . . well, all a matter of taste.
You guys have urinals at C-F as I recall – probably same ones I was using in 1972. Still, better then the troughs we used at Ole Miss. There were some stalls for guys though, handy for the stage frightened or mixing drinks.

  21. redfred2 08/05/2008 at 4:59 PM #

I zoomed in on the photo, and if you look close enough at the right bottom corner, you can barely make out an inscription that reads,

    “Wooluff”
    Medium: Play-Dough
    by Scott Adams/5th grade

I’m just guessing here, but I take it that attention to detail and realism aren’t part of the criteria here. It’s the thought that counts in this stuff I guess.

Is that a “simu-stone” mailbox I see suposedly hidden the wall just above the wolf’s right ear, or is it just another of those naturally occurring, perfectly rectangular, stones that you see laying around everywhere you go these days?

  23. MrPlywood 08/05/2008 at 5:13 PM #

LOL redfred. It looks like a haggis with legs while he’s taking care of some business, if you know what I mean.

    How about something like this?

  24. redfred2 08/05/2008 at 5:23 PM #

MrPlywood, HELL YES, that is much more like it!!!

Oh well, I guess it’s kind of like everything else up there, if you don’t get too close, everything “looks” good in Raleigh.

BTW, is there a CNC machine anywhere on that campus?

  25. EverettBeez 08/05/2008 at 5:27 PM #

I like those wuf’s way better Mr. Plywood.
