John Wall’s coach calls 850 the Buzz(updated Sunday morning)

The reports that John Wall has made a decision to follow Dwon Clifton to Baylor may be premature. On Dave Glenn’s afternoon talk show currently being hosted by Bomani Jones, Word of God coach Levi Beckwith called in to set a few things straight. This is definitely worth listening too as he talks about the Clifton’s, his background, his role in the process and what he considers the most important factor in this decision – who is going to be John’s head coach during his time in college.

Original writeup from Friday

The John Wall recruiting saga appears close to ending. In this case, the rumors circulating that the nation’s number one prospect was likely to end up at a school willing to hire one of his AAU coaches, Dwon Clifton, appear to have a lot of truth behind them:

Wall’s travel team coach – Dwon Clifton of D-One Sports – will officially be named Director of Player Development at Baylor University on Friday, according to multiple sources close to the situation.

Wall is a 6-foot-4, 184-pound point guard out of Raleigh (N.C.) Word of God Christian Academy. He is expected to announce his college decision early next week according to Brian Clifton, the director of D-One Sports and Dwon Clifton’s older brother.

Naturally, Wall is expected to follow his travel team coach to Baylor..

Baylor apparently was not the only school pursuing Clifton as a coach. According to a source close to the situation, Dwon Clifton was offered coaching positions by other Big 12 schools as well as schools in the Big East and SEC.

Why Baylor?

Apparently the connection to Clifton/Wall was Baylor assistant coach Matt Driscoll who was on the Clemson staff when Dwon Clifton played at the University of Clemson. Dwon grew up in High Point, NC and he was recruited by NC State’s former coach Herb Sendek. In the end, Sendek did not offer him a scholarship. After a couple of years at Clemson, Dwon transfered to UNC-G and only had a marginal impact at either program.

In other recruiting news, Scott Wood has been making a lot of noise recently with his play on the AAU scene. He has had two games of 35+ points in the past few days and has reportedly been lights out from behind the arc leading his teams to upsets. Here are some comments from Bob Gibbons:

Bracket play began Tuesday at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex for the teams still in the playoffs of the AAU Junior Boys’ National Championship Tournament, and there were some shockers. The biggest surprise was the SYF Players (Ind.) upsetting one of the tournament favorites, Houston Hoops, 94-82. N.C. State commitment 6-foot-5 second guard Scott Wood (Marion, Ind.) put on an amazing shooting performance, hitting six of eight 3-point point attempts and 15-of-16 free throws for a tournament-high 39 points, to lead SYF to the win. 6-9 C Keith Gallon (Houston, Texas) had a good game for Houston Hoops with 20 points and 14 rebounds. N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe has to be feeling great right now, getting recent commitments from top-rated players Lorenzo Brown and Richard Howell, and then seeing Wood, his earliest 2009 recruit, shoot the lights out here.

With recent 2009 commitments from top 30 combo guard Lorenzo Brown and top 75(moving higher?) combo forward Richard Howell, the play of Wood should not go unnoticed. Scott’s commitment received mixed reactions from this blog and many NC State fans across the internent. While signing top rated players is always welcome, hopefully the recent play of Wood is a very positive sign in terms of our staff’s ability to identify quality ACC players at early stages.

We’re such a media driven, (in your face) media saturated society that any comment can be blown out of proportion. Things hit the air so quickly in this day and age and through so many different forums: internet resources, CNN-FOX-ESPN news scrolls, news papers, BLOGS-it’s any wonder why any of these kids say anything. If I were them, I would just say “I plead the 5th” to everything asked. However, if you can’t deal with that pressure, you have no business even dreaming about the NBA.

I suppose when it comes down to it, I have no right to judge any of these kids because I have NO idea how much pressure they’re in or what they’re back story is. Never having walked in their shoes-I rescind all comments and now plead the 5th-with the exception of one caveat-that I am drinking a 5th, in which case, anything and everything I say will be influenced by said gin and have no true barring to reality unless of course it is simply a thing of genius and/or true beauty.

Afterglow, I appreciate you listing of those player rankings, and like always that would be with the exception of those last two names of course.

As far as maximizing the potential of any future NCSU BB players goes, Sidney Lowe has build and promote NC State’s BB program in a way that is far removed from what was existing here when he first arrived. Granted, on the surface it doesn’t appear that he has done so well in accomplishing that task thus far, though his recruiting results do prove that he is able to convey his personality and philosophy to these young kids, their parents, and also their HS coaches. It has nothing to do with do the fan base at all, they are more than a coach could ask for, but I am still pretty sure that Sidney Lowe is well aware that there is a general lacking in the depth of spirit and no soul involved INSIDE the program up there in Raleigh right now.

We shall soon see if he is still learning on the fly, which is a good thing, and if he is ready to implement his own style regardless of his talent or anything else. I think maybe he has the self confidence and has already started pushing NC State as THE place to play basketball in the ACC, but the only way he’ll be able to continue that is to begin producing some positive results on the basketball court when it matters. I’m not even talking about winning games for now, because there are too many fundamental issues that need work before we can even start worrying about winning with any consistency. He just needs to start showing that he knows how, and has a plan mapped out, that will show some signs of getting us to where he/we all want to be.

Otis, agreed, it shouldn’t be, but that is very much the case. It is a fact only because some sports media outlet decided that it was appropriate to print what THEY thought, whether it’s true or not. Sure, we’d love to see Wall suited up in RED, just like many other programs in the country would as well, but one ambiguous viewpoint shouldn’t weigh so heavily on his or anyone’s mind. It’s not true anyway. Sidney Lowe is in full control of his own destiny, with, or without the immediate services of a very talented, welcomed, and potential hometown/in STATE/ hero.

  4. redfred2 08/03/2008 at 3:58 PM #

Wait a minute, I think I might have just added to the aforementioned “pressure” myself.

  5. redfred2 08/03/2008 at 4:27 PM #

What is it, I sit down with a few minutes to type, and everyone instantly disappears? Does everyone run over to PP for awhile, hoping I’ll just go away? Do I need to brush my teeth, put on deodorant, or something else maybe? What if I go wash my hands before touching the keypad again, would that help?

  6. Afterglow 08/03/2008 at 4:50 PM #

There, there redfred2, I’m here. Sh, sh, shshsh.

Pee, workout. Next I’m going to get my haircut.

I see what you’re saying about building the image behind NC State that seemed to be lacking when HWSNBM coached here. That definitely needs to be rectified and could (and probably is) the reason so many have bailed either via transferring or going to the National Benevolent Association<<<no, Basketball… right? Basketball Association? Anyway. I’m willing to give Lowe time on this. A lot has to be undone and redone and there were a lot of external things that didn’t help his situation as well. I believe he has the personality and agree, the fan base is definitely there as well-the players are starting to roll in. All the pieces are almost here it’s just a matter of whether or not Lowe and Co can put them into place. I think he can.

    I’ll be back.

  7. redfred2 08/03/2008 at 5:31 PM #

I guess I’m just feeling neglected and needing some attention, thanks Afterglow. Anybody seen my Midol?

Good thoughts though Afterglow, and I totally agree. It doesn’t mean that I won’t still go ballistic in a heartbeat, or that I’ll be blind and won’t be hard on the Coach in the near future. I won’t be a blind SLSS’er like we witnessed in the past. But I still hold the belief that Sidney Lowe has exactly what we need the most right now, and I am more than willing to give a fair amount of time for him to develop it in Raleigh.

That said, first whistle, game ONE in this upcoming season, and not one second later, should be the exact point where Sidney Lowe is begins fulfilling his mission at NC State. It should be at that exact split second in time where he shows us EXACTLY WHAT HE EXPECTS to see occurring on the BB court. There should be no room for any half ass efforts, no compromises and no signals coming by way of the NC State coach’s box that it will EVER be tolerated if it occurs again. Sit ’em down, nobody will like it, but let them lose, and absolutely DEMAND that they play BB with HEART when given the opportunity.

OK, we all seem to agree Sid is good at spotting future talent. Then give Javi a chance. He was one of the few guys really putting out last year and I believe he will surprise more than a few people in the next couple years.

  9. Afterglow 08/03/2008 at 7:38 PM #

    Everyone Loves Javi

Fist off, I think Sid took what he could get but in any event, here’s what I like about Javi:
    • He’s got heart
    • He’s got toughness
    • He now has some (albeit, fire branded) experience

The reality is this kid played with “a nothing to loose attitude” last year. Really, there was nowhere he could have gone even when playing poorly because there were no other replacements for him. I sense that this kid would not have seen playing time on any other team in the ACC. This is not to bash him, I still appreciate all three of the aforementioned qualities but we’re hurting for a point guard in a big way and let’s not fool ourselves, we haven’t found one yet.

This year will be telling as he will now have everything to loose with his current competition. With those three qualities still in place, he will also have to implement: court savvy, consistent shooting, taking care of the rock, etc. We will find out soon enough just how good a player he is and how much everyone loves Javi but I do believe we will find out in short order; less than a couple of years.

  10. Afterglow 08/03/2008 at 7:51 PM #

I totally agree Redfred2. Geese, should we strum the guitar and break out “the cumbia my lord” lyrics?

This year we will know based-not on wins-but on fundamentals, heart, team chemistry, in game coaching and adjustments among other things-whether or not Sid is our coach for the future and I to believe that we will know this at first sight. I should say our “idea of what we think” our coach of the future should be as long as Jed is in power.

  11. redfred2 08/03/2008 at 9:29 PM #

See Afterglow, told you so, maybe you’ll listen the next time that I say something. I told you it wasn’t any fun being left out here…all alone…on this blog. It’s kind of spooky actually, like the all of the lights suddenly went off, and it’s quiet, TOO quiet, and, and…

    Oh well, never mind.

Back to basketball and more lucid thinking. For this upcoming season I would actually throw the in game coaching strategies out the window, in a trade for some physically and mentally PREPARED kids/BB players who have had FUNdaMENTALS absolutely drummed into their skulls over the off season, and can prove it on the BBall court.

  12. Ed89 08/03/2008 at 9:31 PM #

If anyone has seen Kelly play, he’s just not a State guy — sorry. When I think of State PF’s like say Big Ben, Googs, Chucky, Thurl, Cozell, Todd Fuller, I think blue collar…Ryan Kelly is white collar – I bet he goes to Duke. When the final five of a guy’s choices include Duke, Wake AND UNC, and no STATE (after the way we’ve recruited him), that’s a slap…I DON’T want him…good riddens…Favors or DeWitt will quickly make us forget about him.

  13. redfred2 08/03/2008 at 9:56 PM #

So, you’re saying that young Ryan Kelly thinks he’s a little too good for NCSU, huh? That he possibly prefers getting lost in the already over crowded and forgotten blur of blue clad BB players in the state of North Carolina. Well now, him being a little too good may actually be the case at the moment, but not after we find our suitable replacement to fill the spot we were once holding for Master Ryan Kelly, esquire.

  14. turfpack 08/03/2008 at 10:49 PM #

Ryan never intended to go to State -He will end up at DUKE or WAKE.
That’s what I here form the Ravencroft family.
Very good player-but not a great loss-I like other players…..
Sid’s heating up the recuiting battle.

  15. happypackdad 08/04/2008 at 8:55 AM #

“Favors or DeWitt will quickly make us forget about him.”

What about favors AND DeWitt? Ryan who?

  16. Ed89 08/04/2008 at 10:15 AM #

    ^^^Very good player-but not a great loss-I like other players…..
Sid’s heating up the recuiting battle.

^^^What about favors AND DeWitt? Ryan who?

    I like both your sentiments!!

  17. vtpackfan 08/04/2008 at 1:36 PM #

DeWitt was “lost” for three years and know is back on the scene, and is set to be a 22 yo frosh I’d like to find any prep out there that wants to be “one-and-doner” more then this guy.

  18. PackerInRussia 08/04/2008 at 3:08 PM #

Be afraid; be very afraid. This just in from ESPN:
“Fast risers: Programs like Texas Tech, Fresno State, BYU and North Carolina seem to be on the verge of taking a big step forward.”

Even if this plays out and Un-Carolina has a good season, I would hardly call it a fast rise. A deflated balloon rises faster. A 500 pound man doing pull-ups rises faster. Hugh Hefner…not going there.

  19. redfred2 08/04/2008 at 5:18 PM #

^Oh well, let the ‘experts’ pump up heels FB once again, it’s become their annual right. Those young, uh, guys over there at least deserve something for their efforts anyway, especially considering that they’re required to suit up in those powder blue, pansie ass, football uniforms for all of their four long years in chapel hill.

  20. redfred2 08/04/2008 at 8:40 PM #

Looks like Dewitt is out of the picture, seems he’s chosen to play for Huggy Bear at WVU.

  21. choppack1 08/05/2008 at 7:32 AM #

I think UNC is being hyped for several reasons:
    1) They were young last year.
    2) They lost a lot of close games last year.
    3) They are in one of the weakest BCS subdivisions in the brief history of subdivisions.
    4) For their non-subdivisions games, they don’t play league favorite Clemson or FSU (though one could argue that actually makes their schedule tougher.)

In other words, with conference games against Duke, NC State, Miami, GaTech, and UVa (5 teams who are predicted to have losing records) – they should be able to piece together a pretty good season.

Normally, I buy into the media bias thing, but this is more of an indictment of their conference.

  22. happypackdad 08/05/2008 at 8:01 AM #

Dewitt actually gave a verbal commitment to West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins in the spring, but he has since backed off that commitment and re-opened his recruitment.

  23. Classof89 08/05/2008 at 8:27 AM #

I’m guessing we will never have much of a shot at athletes in any sport coming out of Ravenscroft…talk about “old Raleigh money” central…you can’t throw a stick there without hitting the kid of a UNC/Duke/Wake Forest lawyer or doctor…

  24. redfred2 08/05/2008 at 11:42 AM #

happypackdad, I didn’t know much of anything about Dewitt, so last night I typed his name + recruiting in the browser bar. After skimming over a few recruiting pages, ones that stated that they were updated as of yesterday, it ‘appeared’ that Dewitt was solidly committed to WVU. So I jumped on here and I typed that INCORRECT post due to my own ignorance and without seeing any updated info that let me know what was really going on. I found something on his situation after digging further, but you would think that the major recruiting sources would update something like that. Anyway, it was still my bad for typing without knowing what I was talking about.

    Anything new on Favors?

  25. happypackdad 08/05/2008 at 2:21 PM #

Favors will take some time. Hear between us & GT. We just offered Garrius Adams.
