Series with Marquette & other dates (Updated 7/25)

MU and NC State have agreed in principle to a home-and-home series beginning this season at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C.

The series had been in the works for the past month or so, with NC State working behind the scenes to move a guarantee game in order to accomodate MU.

Having recently been able to do so, the Wolfpack will now host the Golden Eagles on Dec. 22 at a time yet to be determined. The contract is expected to be finalized shortly.

I kind of look at playing Marquette as our “Big 10 Challenge” game that we won’t have this year.

It’s nice to play a team with such a historically strong connection to our program – NC State defeated the Golden Eagles, then coached by legendary Al McGuire, to win our first National Championship in 1974.

You can click here for recent entry about other additions to the Wolfpack’s future basketball schedules.

About a week after we learned of this series the Charlotte Observer decided to run an article about it. The paper’s article on Friday, July 25th did provide a little value as it highlighted a few dates for other games this season.

N.C. State’s 2008-09 nonconference schedule also includes games at New Orleans on Nov.15 for the season opener, against Davidson on Dec.6 at Charlotte’s Time Warner Cable Arena, home against East Carolina on Dec.16, and at Florida on Jan.3.

It is not suprising that the Charlotte Observer’s sister, the N&O ran the same article this morning. Check that. Almost the same article. The N&O’s article actually had a couple of extra paragraphs of relevant information near the end of the story. I wonder why Charlotte chose to omit the extra, but valuable, information?

In 2009-10, N.C. State is scheduled to play at home against Florida and visit Arizona and Marquette. Fowler also expects to get an ACC-Big Ten Challenge home game in 2009-10.

Arizona will visit N.C. State in 2010-11.

Nice … this is good news

    Quality opponent…

  3. BJD95 07/22/2008 at 8:29 AM #

We really needed to add a quality game after losing the Big Ten Challenge slot. Nice work, Coach Strickland.

Marquette also has great guards….it will be a good early test for Javi and Farnold. Concur about the great work by Coach Strickland. Where’s Q???

  5. Noah 07/22/2008 at 9:09 AM #

Hopefully, as far away from the program as humanly possible.

For the 2nd year in a row they have scheduled one of the few decent out of conference games right before Christmas. Last year the only two decent OOC games were Cincy on Dec 23 and Davidson on the 21st, this year it will be Marquette on Dec 22. A lot of people, myself included, are traveling to see their families the week of Christmas or have some sort of holiday activites going on and will miss those games.

Can’t we schedule some directional school the week of Christmas and play the real teams at a time when the majority of the fanbase is able to show up? And then they wonder why attendence is down for the OOC games…

^^^^”Hopefully, as far away from the program as humanly possible.”

    I agree with that one!

Between Marquette and Florida we need to pick up a win to have a shot at an acceptable season (and at UF probably isn’t happening). It’s probably as decent a time as any to be hosting Marquette, since they’ll be “breaking in” a new coach.

The scheduling of games has been a disaster from a ticket purchasing fan. We only have 1 or 2 decent home games among the first 10. And, this one is right at Christmas.

At $1000 a pop per season tickets, to have only 10 decent opponents (8ACC + 2 others) is ridiculous. If anyone wants to purchase some of my tickets for all the heavyweights we play, let me know.

Sidney and crew, pls get some good name opponents on the schedule. the past few years, including Herb’s as well, sucked.

nice work Coach Strickland. Has Q been asked to leave yet or is he still hoodin’ around the RBC center?

    SFN: August 1st

“Sidney and crew, pls get some good name opponents on the schedule. the past few years, including Herb’s as well, sucked.”

Coach Lowe is upgrading the schedule, slowly…at least we get the 2 good games now instead of someone like the Jaspers who became a media darling one year, and we schedule them the next.

  12. StateFans 07/25/2008 at 9:13 AM #

I don’t think that the schedule upgrading is going slowly. I think that it is moving at very fast pace.

Next year we will have Big 10 game, Florida, Arizona and Marquette in addition to the ACC.

Sheesh! That’s enough!!! Can we get some cupcakes!

  13. wufpup76 07/25/2008 at 9:28 AM #

^I’ve wanted this for a LOOOOOOOOONG time … finally, some quality opponents – on the road even!

I’m fine w/ 0-2 “cupcakes” per season … the tougher the schedue the better so far as I’m concerned …

Please never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, never go back to the HWSNBN schedules … EVER. … Idiotic scheduling at it’s finest

“NC State defeated the Golden Eagles, then coached by legendary Al McGuire, to win our first National Championship in 1974.”

Correction, the ’74 Wolfpack defeated the Warriors, coached by legendary Al McGuire. That was before political correctness wreaked havoc on the NCAA.

Upgrading the schedule is great and all, but does anyone see any reason to be the slightest bit optimistic about actually winning any of these games? Frankly, I don’t.

  16. nycfan 07/25/2008 at 11:05 AM #

What about the big OOC tournaments? Any of those on the horizon? I find them enjoyable as a fan (probably disproportionately so), but it seems like State rarely plays in the NIT, Maui Classic, Great Alaska Shoot-out, etc.

  17. happypackdad 07/25/2008 at 11:54 AM #

Let’s not complain about easy an schedule until we go undefeated OOC.

“Upgrading the schedule is great and all, but does anyone see any reason to be the slightest bit optimistic about actually winning any of these games? Frankly, I don’t.”

Better to lose to Marquette, Florida, and Arizona than New Orleans, ECU, and Wofford … oh, wait – we can still lose ALL those games! 🙂

  19. WolftownVA81 07/25/2008 at 12:02 PM #

^I’m optimistic because I think playing quality opponents will help recruit the best kids. Sure, the ACC is the toughest conference, but who doesn’t like a good road trip? Not to mention that the extra TV coverage could help sell the school to a prospective star. Keep up the good work guys – this is progress.

i have a question… why in the HELL is the Jimmy V tournament not held in the Valvano Center,, i mean the RBC center EVERY G D YEAR?

Those of us who bought LTRs have been totally bent over. I’m taking the “Bobby Knight approach” so I’m trying my best to enjoy it.

The good news is all that $ has improved my football parking considerably.

  22. Girlfriend in a Coma 07/25/2008 at 2:44 PM #

Also, with Q gone who is going to supply the gangbangers to sit behind our bench?

  23. ushum 07/25/2008 at 2:54 PM #

whoever asked where Q was, go check the Men’s Club in Raleigh…kinda like “Cheers” when he walks in…

  24. packbackr04 07/25/2008 at 3:21 PM #

did they really have to CONVINCE sidney that Q needed to go? it seems like this should have been done months ago

  25. Girlfriend in a Coma 07/25/2008 at 3:29 PM #

If Sidney really had to be convinced that Q needed to go we are in even worse shape than I thought, and that is saying something.
