Giglio Discusses Pack “Options” at QB

It’s just a small blurb from last week – Tom O’Brien discussing the five potential starters at QB. It’s not really an embarrassment of riches, as past performance or inexperience means that all candidates come with question marks.

But it’s really an academic discussion. Russell Wilson will start, and barring injury or extreme ineffectiveness, will do so all year. So – who do you think should be Wilson’s backup? I would bet on Justin Burke, but that’s a complete guess.

By the way, I can’t knock Evans for much given what he’s sacrificed and done for Wolfpack football. However, I think we can all agree that if he is our starter throughout the season that it really doesn’t bode well for our QB play in the foreseeable future.

I agree Glennon should RS unless he’s going to start every game. If we burn that year it better be for good reason and he better walk into next year with way more experience than maybe he otherwise should have. If he doesn’t red shirt we start him every game for better or worse.

Evans character and sacrifice have never been questioned, nor should they be. I think he is a great asset as a backup this year. If Wilson struggles or is hurt, at least we know what we have with Evans.

He has some bad habits as a QB that are devastating for a football team though. First he throws off his back foot under pressure, and frequently late in the flats for pick 6’s. Second he stares down receivers, which causes difficult throws and more INTs. Third he has a tendency to one hand the ball when he is able to scramble, causing fumbles. A lot of QBs do this at the college level, but some of them have foot spped to decrease the risk, Evans isn’t amongst those QBs. He will likely have to scramble more this year than any other, so if he is our guy we will have more sacks and more fumbles. Wilson may not have the savvy of Evans, but he appears to have the leadership skills and may be able to punish blitzes more often and provide positive yards where Evans would be sacked. Glennon is hopefully the type of talent that must be played, Wilson would be an ideal backup for a solid pocket QB, as he is different enough to throw off a gameplan. I view Wilson as a stopgap, and if he turns into Charlie Ward that’ll be great.

The depth chart means nothing. TOB has an approach for developing depth chart as the preseason wears on. He also likes to casue mischief, which is a good idea.

At the wolfpack golf jamboree, one of the assistants remined me that Daniel had a bad shoulder most of the season. He toughed it out and I appreciate what he has done. The fact that Burke and Beck were not a real option at that time is worrisome.

It will be Evans or Wilson. I don’t think the coaches would not play the best QB and backup. If Evans is No 1 or 2, he will play regardless of his senior status. Our coaches want to win games and I can assure you if Evans is the top 1 or 2, they will not give up on him.

On runblocking, our coaches may go with more misdirection. Let the defense run out of position and then give them a push. If Wilson is QB with our backs, we should be able to run somewhat. I hope for a 120 ypg average. I think that would be quite an improvment over last year.

Evans has served the team in ways never imagined and we owe him. But if he is the starter this year we are in stasis for this season and beyond. If he starts for the year where does that leave the three other guys (I discount Beck as an option – he is frightening). We need to establish a progression for these kids – and potential recruits – to see. If we get this wrong highly rated QB prospects will shy away.
Burke – Good kid but I think he would have gotten more looks last season if he had any real hope of being the starter.
Wilson – The immediate future should be his. Unless he is decisively beaten by Burke or Glennon he should start.
Glennon – The future. If he can handle the job he should start this season. But that is probably not the case and so should red shirt.
Also nice to have a level-headed and experienced coach making these decisions!

Don’t underestimate Anthony Hill’s impact on the run game. He was a quality downfield blocker and forces LB’s to read him, and even slows the pass rush if the DE is trying to keep him on the line. If we have a serviceable FB we should be a better run team.

The move of the DLs was to get better run blocking, DL are quicker and used to firing off the ball, and usually meaner. Chuck did this early on, and the results were pretty good. One of those guys turned into an all-pro.
