Pack loses pitching duel 1-0

Updated: FSU scored the games only run in the bottom of the 8th inning on a sacrifice fly. Down 3-0 in the count, NC State chose to pitch to the best hitter in the ACC and Buster Posey made us pay. The potential #1 draft pick in this year’s draft hit the ball off the right field wall to put himself in scoring position. It was a questionable decision not to put him on first base intentially down that far in the count.

Updated: Today’s weather in Tallahassee has been questionable for the most of the day as a big line of storms moved through earlier in the afternoon. However, the the regional radar shows that the thunderstorms appear to have already cleared the area. There are still showers moving towards Tallahassee as showers are forecasted for the rest of the evening.

The Wolfpack baseball team beat #3 ranked FSU badly last night 12-2:

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — In what was probably the biggest game of the year to date, NC State didn’t come up big; the 18th-ranked Wolfpack came up huge. Matt Payne led a 14-hit attack with three hits and three RBIs, and Eric Surkamp and two relievers combined on a three-hitter to lead the Pack past third-ranked Florida State 12-2 at Dick Howser Stadium.

Game 2 of the series is tonight and can be seen on Time Warner cable channel 320 with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 pm. You may have to order the Fox Sports package that costs about $3.50 per month. If you call the cable company, then they will turn it on in a matter of minutes once you order the package(which I had to do last night).

Time Warner for eastern NC can be contacted at: 1-800-TWCABLE (1-800-892-2253)

Right now the Pack is currently #11 and #9 by www.boydsworld.com and www.warrenolan.com respectively. From looking at the NCAA field from the last two years, there does appear to be strong correlations between RPI rating, hosting a regional, and receving a top 8 national seed. Here are the 16 teams that hosted and the top 8 national seeds for each of the last two years:

    2006

1. Clemson, #1 seed
2. Rice, #2 seed
3. Cal St. Fullerton, #5 seed
4. UNC
5. GT, #8 seed
6. Georgia, #7 seed
7. Alabama, #4 seed
8. Oklahoma
9. Miami
10. Texas, #3 seed
11. Nebraskas, #6 seed
13. Ole Miss
14. UVA
15. Oregon St
18. Oklahoma St
25. Pepperdine

#12 FSU and #16 Arkansas did not host out of the top 16 teams in the RPI.

NC State was #17 in the RPI.

    2007

1. Rice, #2 national seed
2. Vandy, #1 national seed
3. UNC , #3 national seed
4. Texas, #4 national seed
5. ASU, #5 national seed
6. USC
7. Texas A&M
8. FSU, #8 national seed
9. UVA
10. Ole MIss
11. Long Beach State
12. Missouri
13. Coastal Carolina
17. Arkansas, #7 national seed
21 San Diego, # 8 national seed
23 Wichita St.

NC State was rated #20 in 2007.

Over the last two seasons, 27 of the possible 32 teams ranked in the top 16 from www.boydsworld.com have hosted regionals. Additionally, 12 of the 16 teams rated in the top 8 for these two years received a top 8 national seed. Note that the RPI ratings used may actually reflect wins and losses accumulated in tournament play. So the correlations drawn here could actually be somewhat inaccurate in either direction.

    Go Pack!

If we host we should make and effort as fans to turn out in massive numbers.

Being both a NCSU and a Campbell Alumi I must take this opportunity to recognize the Campbell University Softball team. They won the Atlantic Sun conference and are playing the first round of the NCAA tournament this week/weekend in Chapel Hill. They play the holes today at 3:30. Whoop those holes.

I’ve been following Campbell athletics hard this year to maintain my sanity. Working well I might add. Men’s Soccer whooped the holes earlier this year. If any of you need a second favorite team – give them a try.

My guess is that I don’t have Fox College Sports Atlantic on DirecTV. Hopefully the game will be broadcast on one of the other 20 FSN channels that I do have.

quick question, if i call up TWC and add that Fox Sports package, can I cancel that at the end of the month or are you locked in for some number of months?

  4. Daily Update 05/16/2008 at 11:45 AM #

You can cancel at any time.

It was a perfect college baseball day, what with the Heels also nicely tenderized by the Canes. Neat coincidence that both games were 12-2. Go Pack!

I’m stuck watching the game at 11:30 tonight on tape delay… stupid Marlins and D’Rays games tying up the local sports channels…

^ Yup, it sucks to live in Florida sometimes.

    But not in the winter.

DBP are you in fla? Orlando here and sunshine has the game on the schedule for 7pm

  9. RAWFS 05/16/2008 at 1:43 PM #

    Captain,

Wish I would known that you are an Orlando guy. I’m originally from Cocoa Beach and get back down there for Shuttle launches on a regular basis. Plus last December, the wife and I did the Universal Park thing for several days just for fun. Anyhow, I would have been glad to buy you a beer as well as transport down any Wolfpack gear for you that is hard do get down there. Seems like there is only Gators, Canes and Noles stuff and the occasional Duke/UNC/UGA hat/t-shirt.

    Thanks for the DirecTV update.

Listening to the game last night on WKNC, Tony Haines made one of the most hilarious comments I’ve ever heard him make. I think it was either the 8th or 9th inning, the Semihole ‘faithful’ were leaving in droves, and he just couldn’t resist saying “The stands are just about empty now, I don’t know where everyones going. They could just be going home, I guess. Let’s face it, it’s Tallahassee, there’s really not much else to do.” You gotta love it.

Go ‘Pack, slam the Semiholes again!

    graywolf,

Yes, last night for one, it was on DTV chanel 634. It was fun flipping back and forth between the State-FSU game and the UNX-Miami game during comercials. Both were a joy to watch! Both were the worst beatings of the season for the losers.

  15. CaptainCraptacular 05/16/2008 at 3:33 PM #

Alpha I’m a transplant but I’ve been here long enough now the family calls me a Florida native. The no state income tax thing is enough to make me doubt that I’ll move back to NC anytime soon.

But I’ll definitely take you up on that beer next time you make it down.

  16. PackerInRussia 05/16/2008 at 4:10 PM #

Solid RPI #’s. Hopefully they can get one more win out of the two. After last night, that doesn’t seem as difficult, but baseball can be a funny game. You can score a ton of runs one night and then only a couple the next. The bats have been hot though, so I’ll keep my hope alive. BTW, DBP, don’t forget it’s just the “Rays” now; not the “Devil Rays”. Wouldn’t want you to feel you have to call them by such a silly name as the Devil Rays when you can use such a cool one instead. Actually, can’t knock ’em since they’re playing so well this year, for once.

Do I have to have some sort of special Direct TV sports package to get this? We just have “basic” Direct TV…

  18. Dr. BadgerPack 05/16/2008 at 4:48 PM #

“^ Yup, it sucks to live in Florida sometimes.

    But not in the winter.”

RAWFS– Tell me about it. Used to live in Wisconsin (hence the “Badger”)

Captain- I’m in Gainesville. We get the Marlins on SUN, and the Devil Rays on Fox Sports Net (FSN picked up the game last night). Cox Communications is screwy…

  20. Daily Update 05/16/2008 at 6:11 PM #

Pack with runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out in the 1st. Leadoff single followed by error on the shortstop.

  21. statemech 05/16/2008 at 7:04 PM #

still zeros on the board for both teams after 3, both pitchers taking care of business so far

  22. statemech 05/16/2008 at 8:01 PM #

still scoreless after 6, great game pitching-wise, it might come down to who has the better bullpen

  23. statemech 05/16/2008 at 8:39 PM #

not sure if anyone cares about these updates, but we’re into the top of the 8th, still scoreless, man on first with no outs, and a new pitcher now for FSU

  24. primacyone 05/16/2008 at 8:53 PM #

    statemech,

Thanks for the updates. The five year old and I were watching it, made it through the 4th, went to put him to bed, came back and the wife had taken over the TV to watch a DVR’d Grey’s Anatomy.

    Keep posting.

  25. statemech 05/16/2008 at 8:56 PM #

FSU just got the first run of the game in the bottom of the 8th, a sac fly to center with Posey getting the run. Drew Taylor came out and Rutter came in to get the final 2 outs. now going into the top of the 9th down by one.

and guess who’s pitching, none other than FSU’s superman Buster Posey.

    Let’s Go Pack!
