State Falls 5-2 to Miami in ACC Tournament Showdown

Clemson defeated Georgia Tech 10-4 to set up a showdown between State and Miami. Quite simply, win and advance to the championship game; lose and go home. After the meltdown against GT in game 1, it was unlikely the Wolfpack would find themselves in the is position. But, the necessary scenario unfolded (though not without some stress– the GT/Miami game was a nailbiter).

State obliterated Clemson Thursday night (10-0, 7 innings behind Shunick), so the pitching staff should be well rested. Miami used 4 pitchers in their 15-12 win over GT Thursday. I would guess everybody but Shunick is available for State today, Miami may not lose availability of any pitchers, as none exceeded 50 pitches Thursday- but they may be limited by pitch count and/or innings pitched.

Starting Pitcher: Jake Buchanan and Alex Sogard are listed by GoPack.com as possible starters. Buchanan had a 9 inning complete game earlier in the year against Maryland; Sogard is a transfer from Oregon State. Buchanan gets the nod.

Top 1: State sends three to the plate, and three go down in order. Garcia is on the hill for Miami and looks strong so far– he is being helped by a rather wide strike zone; let’s hope the zone is consistent.

Bottom 1: Buchanan sets three Hurricanes down in order. The plate umpire is consistent so far and it looks to be a good day for pitchers who can work the corners.

Top 2: Marcus Jones grabs a 2 out single but is left at first base.

Bottom 2: Jackson draws a 1-out walk but Schaeffer absolutely guns him trying to steal second base. 0-0 heading to the top of the third.

Top 3: State strands Foschi on 3rd base; Miami comes up with a couple of nice defensive plays on the infield.

Bottom 3: Weeks hits a 3-run homer down the right field line. He was sitting first pitch fastball and Buchanan obliged. 3-0 Miami after 3 innings.

Top 4: The offense is making this way too easy for Miami. 3 up, 3 down. 3-0 heading to the bottom of the 4th.

Bottom 4: Miami tacks on 2 more runs. Foschi cuts one runner down at the plate. It’s 5-0 Miami and Sogard comes in to relieve Buchanan. Sogard makes it interesting, but gets Weeks to groundout with the bases loaded to limit the damage. The bats are going to need to come to life soon here or the hole may be to deep to climb out of.

Top 5: State strands another runner in the top of the 5th. Running short on time.

Bottom 5: Sogard retires the Hurricanes in order. Pitching did its job, now the offense needs to begin to chip away at the deficit.

Top 6: State strands another; Miami bailed out by two first pitch outs. State isn’t showing much patience at the plate, probably facilitated by the Eric Gregg-esque strike zone. Miami has had some trouble with this as well, but State pitching has made a few mistakes over the middle of the plate.

Bottom 6: Miami’s offense is held in check again. It’s still 5-0.

Top 7: State has a runner cut down at the plate in about the dumbest display of base coaching I have ever seen. Absolutely no reason to send that runner down 5 runs.

Bottom 7: Nothing doing for Miami. Not looking good for the ‘Pack though unless the offense really steps it up.

Top 8: The Wolfpack throw two runs on the board. Could have been more but lack of extra base power nips that.

Bottom 8: Miami goes down in order; last chance for the ‘Pack. Three runs are a must, anymore is a bonus.

Top 9: State puts 2 runners on base, but that’s it. Miami wins 5-2. This was actually a pretty good game aside from a couple of mistakes over the plate by Buchanan.

    10-4, backdoor.

Clemson stranded three runners but GT now has three outs in the bottom of ninth to score 6 runs.

A little late on this one..but why the Clemson game for 7 innings.. is that the mercy rule?
If so.. nice freakin win!!!! We need a picture with Clemxon crying for mercy.

^Yep. Mercy rule, aka the 10-run slaughter rule.

The pitching was pretty good UNTIL. That one was served up on a silver platter.

This is a holiday weekend and it’s beautiful outside. I’m going to wash my boat, clean my rods and reels and get ready for tommorrow. There’s too much good going on elsewhere to get dragged down. Sorry, but I’m turning off the TV.

    Good luck Pack!

Damnit, I didn’t turn the TV off soon enough. Miami with a triple and another run scored. 4-zip Hurricanes

Don’t you worry though Lee, I’m staying positive.

Only in 2003 was State capable of winning a ‘Must-win” game in the tournament and they wound up losing to a Ga Tech team in the championship that had to play 3 games (!) in one day. Sorry, but I’m not feeling very optimistic. But then again, as a State fan, when was the last time I was encouraged to feel optimistic?

Not looking good. Pass me a bit of that pessimism.

You’re all over it Dr. BadgerPack. Needed to keep the inning going, but we decide it’s time to go home early. Also, 3 consecutive innings of the lead-off man getting on base without scoring. We’re almost as fundamentally sound as Brandon Costner is an endurance runner.

I think I harped on this at the beginning of the year, but my biggest peeve with Avent’s teams of late is the complete lack of lineup depth and power. It really comes to bear in a park like this where the strike zone us huge. You need hitters who can make a pitcher pay for mistakes.

Costner as an endurance runner… hehe.

  13. SaccoV 05/24/2008 at 3:22 PM #

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve questioned pinch hitting at the wrong time this season and in past seasons. It’s almost amazing we’ve been able to have big innings this year at all, especially late.

  14. redfred2 05/24/2008 at 3:31 PM #

It been both ways, but I’ve seen tighter strike zones in a T-ball game.

DBP: Redfred, this strike zone is the only thing that kept us from losing by double figures. Miami hitters destroy anything over the heart of the plate. On a day where Shunick and Surkamp weren’t available, this umpire was was a blessing. The close loss has to look better to the tournament committee than a blowout.

Umpire’s crappiness aside, you can’t expect to win baseball games against nationally ranked competition when you get the leadoff hitter on base in 6 of 9 innings and score a total of 2 runs. This team will not get out of the regional, regardless of whether we host (which should be out of the question as it currently stands). To be completely honest, we don’t deserve to stay on the east coast for our regional. We have not beaten the top teams in our own conference consistently. We were the fourth best team in this league, and we should be a 2 seed somewhere else, probably a place like LSU or Vanderbilt. Hats off to Alex Sogard who shut down Miami and probably should have entered the game an inning sooner. Buchanan started out fine but had two bad innings which killed him. Sorry guys, there’s no joy in Redville for this season. 38-20 is just another Herb Sendek baseball season.

  16. statemech 05/24/2008 at 3:48 PM #

nothing left to do now besides wait for tomorrow evening when they declare hosts.

if you ask me I think we have a very strong resume and deserve a Raleigh regional, but as a pack fan I know that what I expect to happen rarely does

  17. statemech 05/24/2008 at 4:09 PM #

    SaccoV – what’s your deal.

RPI of 8, SOS of 11 and probably getting better after playing miami, 3-5 against UNC, Miami, and FSU (ps, FSU went a combined 4-5 against us, UNC, Miami), ranked nationally since April, conference record of 18-11 which made us 4th in the ACC (behind 3 of the top 4 teams in the nation). That’s a quick rundown of what I had at the top of my head, basic point being don’t be such a negative nacy

  18. redfred2 05/24/2008 at 4:16 PM #

We’re at the mercy of others and unable to shape our own destiny. On the bright side, it’s very familiar territory for any Wolfpack fan who likes the intials, BB.

Until State gets players that can consistently hit the ball out and gets several of them (the lineup depth and power problem) we’ll be in trouble in tournament type play. The pitching rich teams are built for good regular seasons.

  20. SaccoV 05/24/2008 at 4:40 PM #

My problem, Statemech, is that we don’t do the things that the best teams in our conference do: move runners over, steal bases, hits with 2 out. One thing many of our hitters did today was work the count in their favor, and I was happily surprised. However, Miami didn’t waste two great opportunities in the 4th and 5th innings by getting early runners on base and bringing them home. The 2nd FSU game in our series we stranded 11 runners in a 1-0 game.
Yes, these teams are good, but we should be as good as they are. I’m also not going to harp about a great RPI number. If we won two of those other games the (3-5 against those three teams), our RPI would probably have been 5 or better, instead of 8, which is on the bottom end of a bid to host a regional. Scheduling tough teams during the season is supposed to help you win late in the year. That didn’t happen in our case as FSU beat us in the last two and we royally screwed the pooch against Ga Tech in game 1 of the tournament.
My question for you is, on what basis do you expect this team to make Omaha? Even if we are given the gift of hosting a regional, I am not optimistic that this team will find a way to win. Too much free-swinging, too many men left on base. , bad times for substitutions. Also, why didn’t Avent pinch-hit for Matt Payne in a crucial 8th inning at-bat with 1 out and two men on base? Payne was an outstanding 1-14 from the plate in three games and had already struck out twice in this game, grounded and flied out each by swinging at the first pitch on a heavily worked Enrique Garcia.

SaccoV, i’d be surprised if we reach Omaha, but i think it’s wrong to say we don’t deserve to host a regional. I think matched up against a lot of the other teams looking for a host spot we have a very good chance, not a sure bet but a darn good one.

i agree with you, though. we don’t play situational baseball very well and we leave way too many men on base. Avent is no national championship caliber coach, he can get us to the post season but Omaha is very unlikely as long as he’s around

  23. redfred2 05/24/2008 at 5:33 PM #

I didn’t watch the late innings, but early on the Pack wasn’t able to hit UM’s pitching for whatever reason, and they were still swinging on the first pitch. I say work a pitcher that you cannot hit and force him to get complacent, or at least run his pitch count up and hopefully force a change for the better.

I know, I know, the strike zone was huge, but at least make him work for an out rather than a first pitch, fly ball.

  24. SaccoV 05/24/2008 at 6:59 PM #

Statemech, it’s most upsetting to me about this end of the season because I did have great expectations for this team because of the RPI. However, if you care about a team, like we all do, and you invest so much of yourself into their season, the championship, or the right to play for the championship, is the goal. When a team with this capability (mostly on paper, I admit) doesn’t fulfill its own expectations (check out pass postings on gopack.com if you really want some sunshine), you can’t help but be upset. It’s just another in a long line of teams filled with hope for a great season to fall short. My wedding day was the last time State played for the baseball championship, that loss to Ga Tech in ’03. Although I’ve been happily married for 5 years now to my lovely wife, I’m contemplating divorce from Fowler’s Farcical Faction.

  25. Dr. BadgerPack 05/24/2008 at 7:03 PM #

red, with a strike zone that ginormous, it’s hard to work the count. It’s bad for hitters– if you get down, you’re probably going to K or have to swing at garbage. So I certainly understand the desire to swing at the first hittable pitch you see. Amazingly, they still had him at about 15 pitches/inning which is basically the minimum I targeted when coaching; that puts most starters out after 6-7 innings.

I think the biggest difference in the game was the power of Miami’s hitters. Extra base hits and homers are what you need to put runs up on the board in a “mistake” game (i.e., one where the pitcher gets a lot of calls and may throw only a handful of pitches in a good hitting zone). If I recall correctly, state had 1 extra base hit– a leadoff double by Foschi late.
