Coach O’Brien Keeping Pack on the Track to Coming Back (Updated with 850 Audio Link)

The Red & White football game is approaching this weekend and Wolfpack fans are starting to look ahead to the 2008 season. (That’s what we do as NC State fans – look ahead…OR…look very far in the past).

I just had to tell you how impressed I continue to be with NC State’s Head Coach, Tom O’Brien.

About this time last year we were basking in the love of a lot of national praise for TOB. You will be interested in the entry which is accessible by clicking here.

Similarly, just this week The Sporting News‘ Matt Hayes picked NC State as one of “Four to Watch” in this article because of his respect for TOB.

NC State: Don’t kid yourself, Tom O’Brien is one of the top five coaches in the game. (SN colleague Tom Dienhart ranked him 4th in the ACC) It took him awhile to weed out the malcontents last year, but by November, the Wolfpack were playing as well as anyone in the ACC (insert your joke here).

This is how Tom O. works: First, he makes the team smarter, then tougher — and once he finds a quarterback, the winning begins. The question: Can junior Harrison Beck become that leader?

I have NO DOUBT that NC State will be a better football team in 2008 than we were in 2007. How much better, and how that improvement translates into wins against a very tough schedule is another question.

I have little doubt that Russell Wilson or Mike Glennon will start the 2008 season at quarterback for the Wolfpack. The worse the offensive line, the more chance that Wilson and his scrambling abilities will get the nod.

Yesterday the N&O ran an article focused on the Wolfpack’s spring practice that I thought was particularly good. It wasn’t the information from practice that was so interesting to me; it was the perspective and tone of Coach O’Brien and his attention to detail

It is no secret to anyone who has privately spoken with the coaching staff that they were nothing short of astounded at the general mess that they inherited when they arrived in Raleigh. I think that this helped set the foundation for a year where TOB and the staff never found their footing or felt 100% comfortable. I think that the transition to a stronger, better program is clearly happening in front of our eyes and some of TOB’s comments in the N&O’s piece indicate his level of comfort with the Wolfpack’s progression:

A year ago, few knew what to expect as the Pack conducted spring practice. O’Brien, after 10 years at Boston College, was unsure about his new players’ work habits, their willingness to learn a new system. The players were unsure about the new coaches.

It was an uneasy time for everyone, a feeling-out process. Baby steps were taken.

And now?

“It’s night and day,” O’Brien said. “I think everything in our program is way ahead of where we were a year ago.

“They have a much better understanding of our coaching staff. We stayed intact for a year, which I think is very key and very important in the long-range success of your program. The coaches are all still here. We’re in the same system.

“We’re out of the huddle, we’re at the line of scrimmage, the ball’s being snapped, we’re headed in the right direction. We’re lined up on defense. We’re starting to play faster on both sides of the ball. Those things all become important because they’re all cumulative. They all add up.”

Similarly, Coach O’Brien gave this radio interview earlier in the week to ESPN Radio 93.1 in Columbia, SC.

“The biggest thing you get out of spring practice is individual improvement.”

“We had our second scrimmage last week, and talking to the coaches they think we are making strides in the right direction.”

“I think everybody was somewhat embarrassed by the way we played the last game of the year.”

“The coaches did a great job. We changed a lot of things around and we changed some people around. As you said, we went on a four-game winning streak and got ourselves back to .500 at 5-5 and had a chance to make ourselves bowl eligible.”

We haven’t been very diligent recently in linking to some of our blogging brethren…so, allow me to leave you with this TOB-related entry from RAWFS discussing the ‘rankings’ of “Coaches on the Hotseat”.

UPDATE: 850 am had a nice 15 minute chat with TOB this morning. Hat tip to Joe Ovies.

SFN^ sorry for the off topic post above.

Pack92^ i am hopeful that TOB can elevate the play of defense as well. i was just saying that the 2004 D was a once in a lifetime defense. likely not to be repeated at NCSU in our lifetimes. That being said, TOB doesnt need 12 future NFLers to have a productive or better yet a very stout defense. IMO, he is making the right moves by bringing in the hog bodies up front.

For the moderators…is there a reason my post above needs to be moderated? Is it the use of “h-*-l-l”?

    Just curious…

I am very impressed with TOB and am glad he is respected in the media. But more importantly, I am estatic over the level of respect him and his staff is building on the high school level. NC High school coaches have wanted a no nonsense man of character for quite some time in place at NCSU, UNC, and other schools. They have one at NCSU. High School coaches are starting to take interest in our team camps again. Going to be quite a feather in TOB’s cap with Matt Ryan going NFL first round. Panthers are taking a serious look at Ryan and already making the calls to possibly attempt to move up in the draft to get him. I am very pleased with the progress TOB is making.

“The lockdown Herring defense that allowed UNC to run roughshod over it in the TA game? The same one that had the self-discipline of a four year old laying on its back having a temper tantrum?

I know how highly they were ranked statistically. ”

One thing about Herring – he was big on the zone blitzing. I remember watching the Clemson game in Death Valley, the Clemson fans beside me said. “When you start beating the blitzes, his answer is to blitz more.” That D had some amazing games, but against UNC and Miami -they definitely could have performed better.

I get the impression from TOB’s comments that mike glennon is the only guy holding up a QB decision as he’s been mentioned a couple of times as having a good shot in the fall. but TOB has also mentioned moving around the OL all spring and that worries me mightily. and i don’t think maddox will start at MLB, but ray michel. and TOB also stated that he likes the projected starters at LB, and they’ll have to hope and pray no one gets injured. OL and LB will be the big question marks this year, i think.

You guys have made me remember how bad and turnover-prone our offense was the year Herring left! I now remember thinking how good that defense COULD have been if they were not on our own 20 yrd line the whole year. Of course, they did have that unx game…

off topic. travis ford from Umass is gonna be the coach at Okie State, taking over for Sean Sutton.

“I think Wilson can be, at the very least, a league-average QB.”

Every year since PR left, the same words have come out of my mouth before each season (except maybe last season), “we don’t need a great quarterback, we just need a decent quarterback to have a good/decent season”. We have yet to actually have one. I’m not asking for PR part 2. Just someone who can be a decent quarterback. TOB mentioned that OL and QB were very important to this season. 2 guys from defense switched to OL and they’ve (everyone on the line) been moving around all spring. My vote is for Wilson because at this point, it doesn’t seem like anyone else can cut it. Beck may be OK if he could keep from airing the ball to the other team. However, I have faith in TOB. He seems much more settled and pleased so far this year than at any point last year. That says a lot to me. Can’t wait to see them play.

The only reason we had the “#1 ranked defense (yards allowed) in the country!!!11!!1!!!” was because the offense would turn it over on our own 30yrd line and the opposing team offense wouldn’t have to go far to score. I’d be more impressed ir we could have the #1 ranked scoring defense one day.

The eye opener was the TOB comment that we could have “a much better team with a worse resulting record” I would rather have a bad record against good talent than a mediocre record against moderately talented teams.

My expectations are low. I see our best teams one or two years out. But I do expect to see improvement every year and TOB is going to do that. If he can pull off some miracles, in the meantime – that would be awesome. We were lucky to get this Coach – someone willing to walk away from a nicely established program to come rebuild a new one. He gets A’s in categories from me.

i wonder what Mazzone is doing now? coaching pee-wee football? heck i had better coaches on some of my pop-warner teams than Mazzone so maybe not.

With the talent at the skill positions, I think our QB just needs to protect the ball. If he turns out to be average (or even slightly below) in production but above average in TOs, we can be a 6-6 or 5-7 ball club. The graduation losses on the OL and LB, along with our best player on defense in Morgan the elder, means that brutal O-O-C schedule will catch up to us. I mean we will likely have to make up ground in conference play again.

I think a lot will have to do with how we play that USC game, if we pull a shocker then we could ride the momentum and be a bowl team . If we get blown out, we likely have to fight our way back in conference play. If Wilson turns out to be a playmaker we might watch a great turnaround to 7-5 with no blowouts. That is my hope at this point.

I can’t wait to see them Saturday, I’ll be coming in from H-P with the old man. Might wash the s**t taste out of my mouth from the Basketball season.

I have said this time and time again – the only way that programs who are not traditional powers can hope to join the top ranks is through coaching continuity. Example – VT. They probably had a worse football history than ours pre-Beamer and almost ran him off in year 7. Yet he’s had the same coordinators for years now. Foster has been there what? 18 years with him? That continuity is a large part of what built VT.

Now I see TOB say this –

“We stayed intact for a year, which I think is very key and very important in the long-range success of your program.”

and it warms my heart. I will always believe that at least half of Amato’s problem was that he was so hard to work for and couldn’t keep staff continuity. Imagine if Doc, Chow and other members of the staff could have been kept together? That would have probably overcome Amato’s other glaring shortcomings.

But alas, it was not meant to be, and now we have a coach who seems to get that.

Hahaha. I’m loving the “Carolina” jab, whether direct or not. Nothing like throwing a little salt in the wound! More and more I’m impressed with him. Some of my family is from SC and I myself spend a lot of time down there so I can appreciate that. It’s like he said in an interview last season prior to the ECU game I think it was, anybody that has “Carolina” in their name is a big game for us. He gets it and I think he will get us the results we desire. No denying his track record as a coach. Let the national media, including Mark May, continue to woo over Butchy, I think we got the best guy.
His Carolina reference also made me think back to the UNC/SC game last year and the SC fans at the end of the game chanting “We are Carolina!” amidst an emptying Kenan. PRICELESS 🙂

I attended TOB coaches camp in Raleigh last year.He personally spoke to every H.S. coach that came thru the door. His guest speaker was former State coach Dick Sherdian.I was impressed with TOB comment about the highest respect for Dick Sherdian as a coach and a man(TOB the same kind of coach and person)>TOB is the most respected coach I have ever met-High School coaches had nothing but great things to say about TOB- his coaching ability and straight forward recuiting of kids.As a H.S.coach this will go a long ways toward getting into alot of H.S.’s athletes homes. His asst. coaches were very friendly and knowleadgable as well.
I think we have the perfect fit for N.C. STATE FOOTBALL-it’s going to pay divdends in the very near future.

Dixieboy, there were a lot of South Carolina fans that were really squirming the last few plays of that game last year in Chapel Hill, myself included. It was really fun for a State Alum to dress in Gamecock clothing and go to Kenan to pull for South Carolina while with a Tar Heel alum. He kept introducing me as the “worst nightmare” for a Tar Heel fan!

I’m trying to figure out what to wear when State comes to Columbia this year. Maybe a Gamecock hat and a FireLeeFowler Tee Shirt???

turfpack – I’ve heard very good things about our staff. Professionals w/ plans who really know what they are doing.

” Wonder what Mazzone is doing now….”

He’s the WR coach for the Jets.

No reason for anyone to be negative about upcoming season. We’ll look better, but not quite yet peeps…not quite yet.

    Soon come mon.

  19. redfred2 04/17/2008 at 6:32 PM #

I don’t expect any miracles, too many voids and too much inexperience, but I do believe this team will quietly and methodically earn some respect by season’s end.
