World’s most shocking award

Lee Fowler is garnering media attention….again. Can you believe it?

I guess this is the appropriate spot where we will add one of the dozens of links that we could add on the topic of Lee Fowler’s name being in lights!

This time the News and Observer showers him with praise for his availableness and willingness to “speak for his department”. First an award of excellence and now this. We are truly blessed to have such a man leading our athletic department. Read about how the reporters love our AD.

Evidently, Fowler held the role of color commentator for the radio broadcasts at Memphis from 1985-1994 while also working in the University’s booster club. This was his first role after serving as an assistant coach on the Memphis State basketball teams who were penalized by the NCAA for some of the most major violations in the history of college basketball. (The school formerly known as Memphis State) were forced by the NCAA to vacate their 1985 Final Four appearance and forfeit games won in those years. Fowlers former boss and the former head coach of the Tigers, Dana Kirk, spent time in federal prison later in life.

About Rick

1992 and 2002 graduate from NCSU. Born and raised an NCSU fan. I remember the good ol' days and they weren't in the last 20 years.

I’ve met Fowler a couple times at charity events. Although the rest of his entourage is very friendly and nice, he’s just an obnoxious, aloff, cigar gnawing, unfriendly asshole. He’s better than thou in his own mind for sure.

How in the hell did we end up with this jacknob for an AD anyway?

Also, let’s stop insulting Jeb Clampett and Buddy Ebsen. They were loveable people and characters. Lee is not.

I agree to not insult Jed Clampett — all those NCAA swimming championships were probably the result of him being a great donor and proving the cement pond for recruits.

ha, ha… sorry, I got dilexic on my Jeb and Jed. Maybe I was thinking of the Bush klan? Now those people we can compare to Fowler. Plus, I would have done laps in the cement pond if Ellie Maye and her critters were out there.

But the best part is the caption: “…Fowler and Haynes will bridge the gap between basketball and football seasons by interviewing the coaches, athletes and administrators who work together to form one of the nation’s fastest growing and most successful athletics departments….”

    “most successful” huh?

The present state of college athletics is big business. As long as the WPC is raking in millions, success will never have to be measured by something as peripheral as wins and losses.

It seems to me that before taking any action, the athletic department(and really the academic administration as well) asks this question:
“If we make a change, can it make things worse?”
If the answer is yes, no action is taken. Of course the answer is almost always yes(unless the program in question is women’s VB) so our programs stagnate.
The question that should be asked is “Can a change make things better, and how likely is it to make things better?”

Here’s the question I posted:Question for Athletics Director Lee Fowler:: How do you define success as an athletics administration? The majority of our sports teams are performing miserably on the field.

  11. choppack1 03/25/2008 at 4:24 PM #

Regular Expression – when your previous AD is Les Robinson, who evidently had a hard time w/ the finances, then you have your answer. The question should be – do we have an AD meeting the needs of NC State?

I believe that Fowler is succeeding doing half of his job:
    1) We appear to be running clean programs.
    2) We appear to be financially solvent.
    3) We appear to be building good facilities.

However, he is failing in the following:
    4) Building winning athletic programs – enough has been posted here to show that we aren’t succceeding in this endeavor.
    5) Successful high profile athletic programs – He gets an F here. Basketball, football and women’s basketball.
    6) Providing good customer service to the “fans” – I know Fowler hates it, but there are customers besides players, coaches and administrators that he needs to please. Worse, he routinely insults these customers.
    7) Look like you know what you’re doing – His basketball search and the all-too-often forgotten call to ESPN show a man who would at least – on the surface – appear to be incompetent.

Now, can we find a guy who is better in these 4 of these 7 facets?

I am an alumnus of NC State. I took on of my children to a campus visitation and info session this past week.
I mention this because I heard from the info session and tour of campus personnel how great the fans of NC State were……

This is a true statement when you consider how great NC State is as an academic institution, which my visit reminded me how proud I am to be an alumnus. That being said, also reminded me of our Administration and Athletic Director, and their attitude toward winning…..THEY DON’T CARE.

    How sad!

Hope you’re right Turfpack! I think it’s way over due for the “Big Money” guys to wake up! It’s nice to have a beautiful arena and football facility, but if you’re losing and the fans aren’t happy, you might as well be playing at the Pig Farm!

SFN, I know you guys are busy but I’m anxiously awaiting the plan to promote a change within the athletics department.
