Wolfpack Finally Finds “Way To Win”

RALEIGH, NC – Just days after a loss in the first round of the ACC tournament ended NC State’s basketball season with a nine game losing streak that ensured a losing record for the year, jubilant Wolfpack basketball players emerged from a players-only meeting and announced that they had finally found the “way to win.”

“Man, I am so relieved,” senior Gavin Grant said. “I mean, nine straight games is tough, especially with everyone relying on me for senior leadership. I’m glad we finally have this turned around.” Wolfpack junior Ben McCauley agreed. “We really had some issues. Now that we’ve talked through them, we feel that we’re ready to take on any team in the country and win.”

Redshirt sophomore Brandon Costner, whose game suffered a noticeable lapse in effectiveness compared to the 2006-2007 season, may be the most happy about the Wolfpack finding the way to win. “It’s certainly been disappointing, losing nine straight games. But we always say that tomorrow is a new day, and I can tell you this: our next opponent is going to have their hands full.” Freshman guard Javier Gonzalez concurred with his teammate: “In my case, finding the way to win meant realizing that turning the ball over to the other team wasn’t really smart point guard play. I mean, that’s the difference between us and, say, Carolina and Duke. We’re just as talented, really, and we’ll show that in our next game now that we’ve found the way to win again.”

Wolfpack freshman J.J. Hickson did not pause to speak with the media after the players gathering broke up, stating only that he had to attend “a meeting with some people” before speeding away in a new Cadillac Escalade with a temporary tag.

Wolfpack head coach Sidney Lowe, notified of the players-only meeting, expressed his gratification. “I must say, though, I’d have been much happier if they’d come to this conclusion during the actual basketball season,” Lowe admitted.

When assistants quietly notified the players that the season was, in fact, over, the team was stunned. “Say what?” Grant said. “But we have this turned around.” Costner too was crestfallen, stating, “Such a wasted potential; we really were finally ready to win. I understand now why the fans were so upset yesterday. Oh, well.”

NC State Director of Athletics Lee Fowler said, “This meeting is just another example of how, under my leadership, NC State is building top-caliber athletic programs. Like some guy once said, never give up. When the ACC thinks ‘champions,’ they think, ‘NC State’. And ‘Lee Fowler’.”

Thank God the season IS over!

I thought the Tiger Fans Nation header was only for the ACC Tournament. It was fun and funny for the ACC Tournament, but please give us back our Red and White State Fans Nation header soon.

^ We’ve got a new one for you for the NCAA Tournament. 🙂

Don’t worry…we’ll switch back and forth some.

I have completely thrown up my hands and said “I just don’t get this!”

1)SFN is reduced to parody because, quite frankly, if we don’t laugh, the only alternative is to cry.

2)Our team travels to Chapel Hill and gives a performance so bad that Carolina Fans actually cheer us when we finally break a scoring drought.

3)Our only senior is benched for the last twelve minutes of his final game for the Pack.

4)I look at our ACC competition and then I look at our team, and I ask “How is next year going to be any better?”

    5) We have to watch the Heels perform as the best team in the nation while we finish 12th in the ACC.

I think one more year, and only one more year, is sufficient to see if we have a coach and a team that can do anything. If not, what is the downside in cutting bait and starting all over again?

I understand now why the fans were so upset yesterday.

That’s one thing they certainly do not understand. They seem to be under the impression that fans should either hoot and holler for every good thing they do or alternatively be understanding because (real quote now) “no one knows what [they’re] going through.”

I’ve seen more passion out of 8-12 year old kids playing 11 out on their driveway across the street from my house. Not to mention better passing, better boxing out, and better outside shooting.

If we finish 10th or lower next year it will be time to part ways. There will be no downside, because there will be no place to go but up.

I said this on another post yesterday, and I think it bears repeating–
If the situation presents itself, we should give Rick Barnes all of the money in the Wolfpack Club accounts after firing Jed of course.

Sweet Jumper makes a point. Our programs could hardly perform worse without any athletic director at all.

I’m wondering what the point of this is….

well, we’ve got to talk about something for five months until the first football game

    – i think it’s the perfect opportunity to rack our brains to come up with good things to say about lee fowler

  11. Howler 03/17/2008 at 8:35 AM #

Good Things to say about Lee Fowler:

    1) He is not related to me.

    2) He is not a member of Al Quaeda ( as far as I know)

    3) He is so darn good lookin’

Enough with the banner……clemson deal was funny at first……also enough with this one more year for sid s..t look around see who returns for everyone else and what we have returning? Add intangibles like our head coach, his crack staff and we are in a league of our own.

I wonder how the radio show will go tonight. Last week there were some pointed questions and some uncomfortable pauses. Tony intervened several times to deflect some heated questions and comments.

Is Statefans planning a serious post about the state and direction of our basketball program? I think we know the problems (rebounding, shooting, conditioning), but I’d like to hear how we need to fix them.

Radio Show is a lovefest and info-mercial

Too bad Davidson isn’t orange. They are my adopted team for the tourney (at least the first round).

i keep hanging around waiting to see when this post is coming. i cant wait to hear what is going to happen this offseason. Things cannot be as rosy as Sid is painting them. regardless of what he says, there is turmoil on this team and b/w the coaches. you dont go on a 9 game skid and not have those issues. He needs to man up and admit it. I really want to know who is transferring and i would also like to know who Sid plans on brining in? assuming anyone? or if he just plans to put all his eggs in the 09 basket and John Wall. I dont think thats a very good idea, as we have seen the “all your eggs in one basket” play out with Chris Wright.

Don’t worry, statered. If you don’t get it, you’re not the target audience. Carry on.

I’ll sum it up in Paul’s Law: You can’t fall off the floor.

I hope Davidson advances on Friday against Gonzaga and then Curry drops 40 on the Georgetown guards including Chris Wright at the RBC on Sunday. Go Wildcats!

I wonder, honestly, of what such a “serious post” would consist. I’ve made it clear that I am no basketball expert, but the problems with this team honestly don’t appear fixable by adjustments. Only addition and subtraction.

The bashing by Bilas, as well as Mike Golic, this morning over leaving out “HWSNBN” is amazing!!

I’m with you guys about removing the orange banners. I’ll pull for Tennessee, just don’t make me look at this orange. Looks like an advertisement for hunting apparell or highway cones!

What time is the show tonight and where can I get it? I ususally don’t get to see it, but would like to see what is said tonight.

Quote from an email from a Carolina fan that I received yesterday:

“With a little more help from the officials Clempson would have won.. I never saw such foul calls on the Tarheels.. I think it is rare that we have 2 of our good players foul out!! Anyway we won!! :-)”

I guess we look at these games on different televisions???

  23. JT 03/17/2008 at 9:40 AM #

Seems to me that the question is will Lowe and Co. learn how to change course if a particular scheme isn’t working. I saw a lot of leaning on a merely decent point guard instead of a change of overall the approach to making the team function. I wonder if the offense shouldn’t have gone through McCaulley and not have been based on Javi dumping it into JJ. There was very little team play this year. Too many set plays, too little flow. I’d like to see both in a reasonable mix.

  24. blackdom 03/17/2008 at 9:44 AM #

JT: Decent point guard? after 2 seasons have we seen any change of course from our coaching staff?
And just what we need our inferiority complex is bad enough now you have us lumped with clemson?

  25. blackdom 03/17/2008 at 9:52 AM #

packbackr04: there will not be a serious post about state basketball as long as you and others are waiting for sids solution,or who sids is bringing in also he told us what was wrong after we lost our 7th game in a row he blamed it on his players!
So why would he not look at things with rose colored glasses he lost 9 gms in a row,was routinly outcoached game in and game out, played a offense and defensive system the a junior high coach could disect and plan against.
And he has no worries about keeping his job? So the future with sid will be status quo,if its broke ,I ain’t changing.
