Saturday NCAAT Thread (Down Goes Evil! Down Goes Evil!)

Belmont almost took Duke out Thursday night, and Huggy Bear and crew finished the job today. UConn and asshole-in-chief Jim Calhoun were bounced yesterday. UNC is the last team left to carry the banner of evil in the big dance. Still bummed about our Tigers, but it could be worse.

Loved that game. No way Duke was a 2 seed. Excellent coaching by Huggins.

Looks as if our worst enemy will be the only one left carrying the acc banner. Even then, I can’t pull for them.

I didn’t watch the Duke/WV game, but heard parts of it on the radio. I’m curious how the early technical on WV affected them. If I remember right, it was after a WV player was called for a hand check (!!) against Paulus.

the biggest problem dook had was going like 0-15 from the 3 point line during a long stretch of the game.

so 6 mc donalds all americans and a second round bounce? does coach k’s recruiting philosophy need to change or what? zubek and lance thomas are pretty mediocore players. maybe trying too hard to recruit kids that’ll stick around is biting him in the ass.

This is a very bad year for the ACC any way you cut it. 4 bids and at most 2 advance to Sweet 16, though I think Miami loses.

  6. PackMan97 03/22/2008 at 5:00 PM #

Hopefully, no team will advance to the sweet 16 😉 If we can’t play..no one plays!

Take note young Jedi…And feel free to yell at the Swofford’s of the world…

Why is the Big East better than the ACC?

Because the Big East in the 80’s didn’t decide “Oh, Gtown and Nova won titles and showed they can compete—let’s just promote 2 programs and not worry whether the other programs are challenged or suck or not…”

Because the Big East didn’t allow 2 of its programs to act completely in their best interests and block another hall of fame coach (Jim Boeheim) from coming into the league and perhaps stealing some of Koach Komercials and Roy Cola’s airtime and prominence.

The ACC only allows 2 top flight programs and 2 top flight coaches. State, GT, and Clemson have all been jobbed in tourney finals versus UNC and Duke and not allowed to make a breakthrough. Guys like Barnes leave and don’t come back nor do any other prominent coaches come here because they know they are not going to get a fair shake. The ACC and its refs prop up Duke all year like a straw man but turn their head when it comes to Greenberg and others—who cares who else is in as long as UNC and Duke look good going into the NCAA Tourney!?

Who are the premiere Big East programs? I’m not sure…Gtown? UConn? Syracuse? WVU? Louisville? Uh…

Who are the premiere Big East coaches? Uh, again, I’m not sure…Boeheim? Calhoun? JT3? Huggins? Pitino? Wow…

Way to go Johnny & Co.!!!!!

There’s still time for folks to adopt my Badgers. 🙂

They even have the righ colors (OK, there is that whole Sweet 16 thing a few years back…)

As far as Duke losing, the only bad thing is the loss of ACC money. Revenue shares are what, about a millon a win this year? And since it’s an average(5,6,7 year- don’t recall) the effects of a bad year are felt for a while.

Of course the point of money is rendered somewhat mute if we don’t get someone competent enough to spend it properly in place.

    BJD95,

Why is it again that you hate Duke more than UNC? I hate Duke too, but the only NC State guys I know who feel like you are the UNC fan friends I grew up with that now go to State. Im sorry if you have talked about this, or feel it doesnt matter, im just curious.

  11. BJD95 03/22/2008 at 6:03 PM #

Duke’s ratio of bandwagon fans to actual alums or people with an actual connection to the university is even greater than UNC’s. They also get their asses kissed even more by the media. They benefit from BS officiating as much as UNC.

I also view them as usurpers of our proper role in the Tobacco Road scheme of things.

I find Roy annoying, but at least he does recognize the rivalry with State. I find K to be completely nauseating.

  12. BJD95 03/22/2008 at 6:07 PM #

Wow – either Xavier of West Virginny will make the regional final (to be slaughtered by UCLA).

Brilliant 1st year job by Huggy Bear. He perfectly blends some of Bielein’s traits with his m.o. He wins with the talent he’s dealt with. He may be a tad shady but boy can he coach

    gotcha. thanks

My hatred for the two in blue fluctuates. Usually it’s UNC at the top of the hate list. Duke caught up this year, thanks to punks like Paulus. I can’t root for that little f*cker to win anything. Love to see them lose. It would have been awesome if Belmont held on on Thursday, but this is the next best thing. And to all those bandwagoners who had them advancing to the Final 4, that’s what you get. Your bracket is busted. HA! There was no way they were a legit 2-seed. Give them some neutral refs and they’re just another overrated team.

  16. RegularExpression 03/22/2008 at 7:28 PM #

ShootingGaurd, I had much the same thoughts as you expressed after watching Duke lose. The ACC for several years has fostered the idea of “The Rivalry” to the detriment of the rest of the league. It has been decided somewhere that the league is better when Duke and UNC are better, probably because if say, Georgia Tech and Maryland were the top 2 teams the national interest would be much lower. Maybe so, but as it stands now we send paper tiger to the NCAA tourney as the 2nd place team from our conference and we see what happens.

I think the powers that be in our league have confused having a better league and having a league that ESPN will bend over backwards for for 2 games a year.

44, I can tell you why, this year, I started hating Duke and hating them more than UNC.

THEY CHEAT. At least in the gentlemanly sense of the word.

They are coached to cheat. They are coached not to beat you with superior play, but with playing the odds for cheap fouls. Every trip down the floor, on either side, Duke players regularly throw themselves to the ground on the hopes of getting contact fouls on players when officials aren’t paying attention.

Note: This strategy works in the environment where officials — in the ACC, not the NCAA, as I noted right here (I was a game off in my prediction, but I’m happy about that — are inclined to let it work. There is no way, thanks to YouTube and the Internet, that anyone associated with college basketball, let alone referees, don’t know that Duke’s game plan relies on the flop and phony fouls racking up as their margin-breaking solution.

Do you think Jed was watching the Xavier game and thought, “Wow, that Sean Miller can coach. He used to be an assistant at State. His brother played at State. Maybe I should have called him or some other up and comers like him when Barnes and Calipari turned me down.” I doubt he was watching or thinking, but he should have been doing both!

  19. JeremyH 03/22/2008 at 8:06 PM #

Sweet jumper: do you think Tom Crean wants to coach in the ACC ?

  20. Sweet jumper 03/22/2008 at 8:15 PM #

I don’t know, but he is a very good coach.

  21. JeremyH 03/22/2008 at 8:39 PM #

Mich. St. and Pitt a good, physical game.

  22. Sweet jumper 03/22/2008 at 8:41 PM #

Does anyone know of anyone selling good tickets for tomorrow’s games at the RBC? I am a Davidson grad and a life-long State fan, and I would love to go root for Davidson and then root for Arkansas. I will probably drive up and try to buy tickets from scalpers, but the holes invading our arena has sure inflated the ticket prices online.

  23. Sweet jumper 03/22/2008 at 8:42 PM #

Bobby Knight likes Pitt to get to the Final Four.

  24. choppack1 03/22/2008 at 9:07 PM #

Hopefully, Hansboro wil get in foul trouble early tomorrow and the heels will go home early as well. Go Canes?? (I’m actually pulling for UCLA – they have my favorite player in College basketball and it would drill home to the Heels who their daddy is.)

  25. BJD95 03/22/2008 at 9:08 PM #

Given that it’s MSU/Pitt, 30-28 is much more scoring than one would expect at the half.
