NCAAT Second Thursday (Huzzah for the Cougars)

UNC is all alone carrying the banner of evil in the big dance. Standing in their way is perhaps their worst matchup – the grinding, defensive-minded Washington State Cougars. In a way, we’re all CougFans tonight, but no way do we adopt after that wicked mojo we put on Clemson.

I remember a bad 80s movie (no idea as to title), in which Tom Hanks, John Candy, etc. were in the Peace Corps, missionaries, or something like that. One of the running gags was John Candy teaching a group of indigenous folk the Washington State fight song. That would be a great YouTube to link in the comments.

At least it went OT so you can see the end. Unless they show post-game interviews instead.

WV killing themselves from foul line.

Some shot by Lavender there … tied @ 72!

  4. wufpup76 03/27/2008 at 8:39 PM #

That looked like a goaltend live to me – but on the replay I couldn’t really tell … could be a huge call

  5. wufpup76 03/27/2008 at 8:40 PM #

^Ok, scratch that … another great shot!

Really hard to believe that the A-10 has as many teams in the Elite 8 as the ACC does. Hats off to Sean Miller. Guy can coach.

For once I’m glad to be up north. They switched away from the Cougars game at the half so I didn’t have to witness that. I hate to see the Heel fans happy. Hope they finally meet some competition on Saturday. What was it that everyone was moaning about on Selection Sunday about them having the toughest road to the Final 4? Yeah, right.

    Heels look unstoppable.

I realize teams like Kansas, UofL, Texas, UCLA can beat them…I just don’t think the will. Carolina looks to be in a different realm than everybody else right now.

    WKU rally !!! ohh yeah!

God definitely smiled upon the UCLA cheerleaders 🙂

Hate to say it, but the Holes just don’t care who they are playing. They look right through the opponent and demolish them. Ugh.

Good thing about being in Canada, the sports channel here (The Score) gives us multiple feeds, and switches to the game(s) with action. And Derek Whittenberg is working as guest analyst.

“This game is being officiated fairly – UNC just really freaking good.”

YOu are not kidding. WSU held Traveler and Ellington down but the other players killed them.

I think the best hope is UNC is not used to tight games so if someone can keep it close UNC might not have the guts to hit the big shot. But honestly that is a faint hope. They are disgustingly good.

Louisville will be their first opponent who has a legitimate shot. I don’t usually root much for Pitino, but I’ll be pulling for him on Saturday.

Heels just look like they have that fire this year. When a guy as talented as Danny Green is your 6th man you know you are freaking loaded with weaponry. Ellington is just money. Lawson is back and Thompson/Stephenson are dominating the post. Carolina has won plenty of close games this year. You don’t win 35 games by not having that ability. Hell just ask Clemson. They look like they are the best team in this thing by a wide margin. They will be meeting UCLA in the title game.

Kevin Love has an advanced basketball mind – his passing and fundamentals are incredible. Unfortunately, he also has an advanced body – like that of an out of shape 50 year old.

When Louisville plays UNC the officiating will be critical. If they call it tight, the ‘Ville doesn’t have a shot.

Nice run by Sean Miller’s squad. It’s funny, he sounds just lke Herb in his interviews.

  17. haze 03/28/2008 at 9:02 AM #

^ No, Miller does not sound anything like Herb.

Seriously, I am not and was not a Herb hater but I really believe that he is the worst interview in sports. He literally trips himself with odd syntax, overwrought vocabulary and an endless array of references to process, character and leadership, none of which tell the listener ANYTHING about the game of basketball. Even when I was really digging Herb’s game (e.g. ’02 run with AG), I hated his interviews.

I was lucky enough to get switched out of the UNC-CH game as well. X vs WVU was by far the best game of the night. UNC-CH is the best team left in the tournament. Somebody is going to have to play great and catch them on an off night to beat them. UCLA has the best shot.

The Longhorns had better win tonight or tickets for Sunday will be available on the clearance table at Wal Mart. They have Reliant configured for 43K for this weekend, but they are going to have 71K seats for sale for the Final Four in 2011 or 2012. Tonight will be my first basketball game in a football stadium so I’m interested to see just how good/bad the view will be from the ($156)cheap seats.

so was Tennessee’s record this year a product of the sucky SEC? Not ready to jump on the Pearl bandwagon just yet.

  20. burnbarn 03/28/2008 at 9:19 AM #

UNC looks, talks and executes like a team that is going to win it all. Not to say that they will, but without those traits they would not. UCLA looks good too. Love is quite a player. They have enough speed to match up with the holes.

  21. choppack1 03/28/2008 at 9:25 AM #

Ismael – You have to put things in perspective. Pearl has taken a school that missed the tourney for 4 consecutive years to the NCAA’s Sweet 16 2 years in a row. The only coaches who have done better are Howland and Roy – and Tennessee is not a UCLA or UNC.

In the long run, their current style may prove as “gimmicky” as the modified PO we used to run. However, his kids play their hearts out and when they are clicking (like sometimes we would w/ the MPO) it’s a thing of beauty to watch.

Keep in mind, he is still playing w/ some of Buzz’s kids, his style may be modified somewhat when he gets a chance to build a team w/ all of his players. Still, if they never change a thing, I enjoy watching his teams play.

  22. haze 03/28/2008 at 10:37 AM #

^ They are fun to watch and they’ll be more dangerous as they diversify away from the 3pt line. For now, it’s who they are but their recent success will breed some better interior recruits.

UT and Duke are both proof of the perils of a perimeter dominated offense. It’s good for early success and maybe an upset or two but the legs just won’t let you beat too many good teams late in the season.

UNC looked good and they just have so much depth (esp. with Thompson & Stephenson playing well) that it’s hard to see them losing. Still, they are the same team that went to OT against VT just 2wks back. If a good team can stay close, the Heels can be beat and Louisville is as good a candidate as anyone, right down to the true big man that always troubles Hansbrough. However, no matter how good you are, if you give up an early lead to UNC they’ll just disappear over the horizon and you’ll never see them again.
