PackPride Posts An Update on PG John Wall

PackPride has posted an update on John Wall. Wall is one of the top 25 players in the nation and is from Raleigh. We got permission to run this quote:

While he didn’t name leaders, Wall did mention three schools that are recruiting him hard.

“I think [NC] State is really coming after me hard… them, Virginia, and Memphis.”

NC State is the hometown team for Wall, who lives just minutes from the Wolfpack’s campus. His mother would like to see him play close to home but expect Wall to evaluate all of his options before making a decision.

“My mom, she really wants me to go to State,” said Wall. “That is the school she likes. It would be a good fit, but it’s just something I’d like to do. There’s nothing wrong with being here, but I’m just going to look at all my schools and see what I’ll do after that.”

Those two pieces of information are vital in recruiting any player. A player of his caliber has been schooled heavily to not reveal favorites to the media, but questions regarding what team is recruiting you the hardest is a small glimpse into which schools are on Wall’s mind. The mom factor is always key and for those who contest that Wall’s mother likes State just because of proximity, know that she also loves State because of Lowe. A resounding trend in Lowe’s recruitment shows that most of his recruits love Lowe because he resembles a “father” figure. Lowe is quickly becoming an infamous recruiter and with Harris at his side, it’s no wonder the 2009 class has so much hype surrounding it. Hopefully all of State’s work will pay off, Wall’s recruitment is gonna be a long one.

Wall, Kelly, Favors & either N. Johnson/A. Marhold would be NASTY!

Get him Sid. Even if for one or two years, this guy is the next big step for our program. Hickson was the first big step. He was proclaimed to be and has turned out to be better than any State recruit from the last 15 years. Hopefully, Wall listens to his mother, learns form Sidney and Monte, and wants to play at least one season with his current teammate CJ Leslie which would make him our elite point guard for at least 2 seasons. Now if Hickson’s grandmother will encourage him to stay in school for at least 2 years, we will have something going in Raleighwood.

packgrad, how many scholarships do you think we have available? We lose Grant this year, and bring in Williams and Mays. Then we lose Fells and McCauley. So, we have two available unless someone transfers or leaves early.

The only candidate for leaving early is Hickson and the words coming out of his mouth are he intends to stay. The only candidate for transfering right now is Gonzalez (or Smith) because Degand, Johnson and Ferguson are all transfers to us.

In short, there’s no way we have 4 scholarships available in ’09.

  5. packbackr04 01/03/2008 at 2:18 PM #

wow, that would be great if Sid could land Wall. that would instantly elevate our program to acc contender. C’mon Wall! you dont wanna play for Calamari! bring it home to tobacco road!

  6. packgrad93 01/03/2008 at 2:18 PM #

^ JJ will not be here in ’09. No way he stays 3 years. I’ll be surprised if Costner is here also in ’09.

  7. Noah 01/03/2008 at 2:30 PM #

Again with the Costner rumors. Can someone please tell me where this guy is going? Curves? Jenny Craig?

  8. Rick 01/03/2008 at 2:31 PM #

I would love to see Wall play here for however long.

No way Costner goes early unless he really improves in the next 15 months.

  9. one00_proof 01/03/2008 at 2:31 PM #

The overwhelming consensus is that we’ll have minimum 3 scholarships for 09.

“A resounding trend in Lowe’s recruitment shows that most of his recruits love Lowe because he resembles a “father” figure.”

Man, after the scare this summer with Lowe’s son going postal it’s good to know that it didn’t tarnish Lowe’s reputation as a fatherly figure.

Pak, I don’t think Smith will transfer, but Javi is a possibility. Degand could very well never recover his ability to play BB because his game was based on speed, so he may drop out and become an assistant just like Big Lew. I believe that Hickson will stay another year just because of a loaded draft, he’ll get way more guaranteed money if he waits till next year and goes in the top 5. If Javi doesn’t improve enough this year there is a chance he transfers. So, there is a possibility that we could have 5 open slots that year.

Also, I didn’t realize this, but Fergy is freaking old. He was given a 5th year of high school eligibility, and a redshirt year here. He was born on 1/19/1986. He’s going to be one of the oldest division 1 players out there when he’s a senior at the ripe age of 24 in his final semester. If he isn’t contributing by then, then it just wasn’t meant to be.

  12. packgrad93 01/03/2008 at 2:48 PM #

Costner was checking into the NBA draft after LAST year. He’ll check again after this year.

  13. pakfanistan 01/03/2008 at 2:52 PM #

As far as Degand goes, I believe there’s an outside possibility that he comes back better after this injury.

The success rate these days is very good so he could regain all of his strength. In the mean time, the recovery process will force him to slow down and focus on other parts of his game that he has possibly neglected because of his superior speed.

I say we still have Degand. As for Hickson, the only indication that he’s leaving early is that he’s really, really good. I’ll have to find it, but the rumor is he said he wants to win a championship. Picking up an elite PG like Wall could convince him to stay.

The state Costner is in at this point, no way he leaves. That could all change as the year progresses, but I haven’t seen anything that indicates he’s willing to make the changes necessary to live up to his potential.

I think 3 open scholarships is a strong possibility and 4 is significantly more unlikely.

  14. Trip 01/03/2008 at 2:53 PM #

Sure he’ll check, but if Hickson barely goes #20 in this draft, Costner is a 2nd rounder at the vesy best.

I hope the best for Degand, he was starting to show promise for sure. But if we land Wall, Degand may never play another minute. He’s going to spend most of this year recovering, then next year he’ll be behind MJ/Javi/Fells/Mays as he’s finally getting back into game shape and then here comes Wall in 09, who’s arguably even FASTER than Degand.

  15. Sweet jumper 01/03/2008 at 3:00 PM #

When Costner checks, he will be disappointed. Last year he was in a situation that guaranteed 35+ minutes/game regardless of lazy defense and poor boxing out on rebounds. He does not have that luxury this year and he needs to figure out how to get in the groove with less minutes and less tolerance for screwups. Ben earns every minute he gets and probably deserves some of Costner’s minutes if you want to be brutally honest. Tracy Smith should bust his ass in practice and everytime he gets a minute or two of gametime because there are minutes to be earned inside. JJ is the shining example of work ethic and determination. The entire team should follow the true freshman and commit themselves to hard work every morning at 6 a.m. with JJ to make this team better.

“Costner was checking into the NBA draft after LAST year. He’ll check again after this year.”

OK, Forrest, did you read what I said? He has to improve an awful lot to leave early. Is this something you disagree with? (note: I am not disparaging your hero in any way).

  17. Noah 01/03/2008 at 3:16 PM #

“Costner was checking into the NBA draft after LAST year. He’ll check again after this year.”

That’s like me asking Natalie Portman out on a date. I can *ask.* I don’t think my wife has anything to worry about though.

  18. packbackr04 01/03/2008 at 3:24 PM #

trust me trip^^ it was never meant to be. i dont have to wait for Tferg to get any older to assure you of that.

  19. packgrad2000 01/03/2008 at 3:43 PM #

Someone help me out here: Isn’t Mays also a PG? And if we got Wall, another elite PG, plus with the possibility of Javi, Farnold, and Marques that’s a little overload at the PG isn’t it? I realize there’s no way all 5 would stay, but there’s a possiblity we could have 5 PG’s on the team at the same time? Am I missing something?

  20. packgrad93 01/03/2008 at 3:48 PM #

“He has to improve an awful lot to leave early. Is this something you disagree with?”

of course he does, which is why he didn’t go last year. You don’t think he’ll improve much in 2 seasons?

  21. pakfanistan 01/03/2008 at 3:48 PM #

Well, we don’t have an elite PG yet, so…..

  22. packgrad93 01/03/2008 at 3:50 PM #

^^ Mayes & Marques can play the 2.

  23. pakfanistan 01/03/2008 at 3:50 PM #

    packgrad93:
“of course he does, which is why he didn’t go last year. You don’t think he’ll improve much in 2 seasons?”

He didn’t improve between last season and this season…

  24. Trip 01/03/2008 at 3:52 PM #

Mays/Johnson are combo guards. Javi is a PG, Degand is probably a combo guard, Wall is a straight up PG.

  25. packbackr04 01/03/2008 at 4:00 PM #

i think the only way JJ stays for a junior campaign is if we land Wall. other than a chance at a final four with wall running the show, theres no reason for jj to stay any longer.

is packgrad talking about player development at NC State. lets ask Kenny Inge how he progressed during his time at State.
