More Info On Lack Of UVA’s Gator Bowl Ticket Sales

Even though this article is 10 days old, we thought everyone might want to read it. We also want to save it for future years when iit is bowl selection time.

Before we explain why we’ve come to that point, let’s rewind to 2002. I remember all the whining and complaining by Virginia fans that they were shafted by the bowl process.

The Cavaliers were 6-2 and tied with Maryland for second place in the league standings. The Terps went to the Peach Bowl, and N.C. State (which was 5-3) went to the Gator Bowl. Meanwhile, Virginia was sent to the Continental Tire Bowl, which turned out to be a good deal for the program, but didn’t stop the perception that bowls were out to get the Wahoos.

In ’03, Virginia and N.C. State were 4-4 in the league. The Wolfpack went to the Tangerine (now Champs Sports) and the Cavs went back to Charlotte. More complaining.

In ’04, UVa finished in a three-way tie for third place in the ACC (a year before divisional play) and was shipped to Boise with an 8-3 record.

There are more examples, but you get the point.

Now that Virginia gets an invitation to the Gator Bowl, a New Year’s Day bowl, which all the fans have clamored for, it can’t sell its allotment? That’s embarrassing and sets the program’s perception back 10 years in the eyes of bowl committees everywhere.

Not to be a smart ass, statefans, but it doesn’t look like the Wahoo’s can generate much interest here either.

For the real scoop on why UVA fans are not buying tickets see the Daily Progress article by Jerry Ratcliffe below:

    http://www.dailyprogress.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=CDP%2FMGArticle%2FCDP_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1173353966778&path=!sports

Couldn’t get this to be linked but the article was written on Sunday the 23rd. Bottom line, the Wahoo Nation is pissed about their AD and Administration being so out of touch and finacially abusing their fan base. I live just North of Cville and this story has been building since summer when UVA announce that all FB seats would be reallocated base on $ given. Long time supporters that have had the same seats for 40+ years were booted in favor of new doners with bigger bucks. On top of that, they’ve already been soaked to pay for the new BB arena. And finally, their president doesn’t get what their rivalry with VA Tech means to the average fan. Seems that NCSU is not the only school with a lunatic fringe. This story is one that should be read by all ACC ADs. I’ve been meaning to post something since Sunday but as usual SFN beat me to it.

The link did work so take a look at the survey comments. Ratcliffe does a good job writing for the local paper. He supports UVA but does get the facts out on the table. Too bad it takes a sports writer to figure it out for their administration. I see a lot of similarities between UVA and NCSU as far being out of touch with their respective fan bases.

Whatever the reason for their discontent – the only thing that matters is this:

If you don’t sell tickets to a big bowl game, ALL bowl games take notice and remember it. As a result, next time UVa and NC State are both vying for the same bowl, UVA fans will probably wind up being po’d again that they were passed over.

Wow, that UVA athletic director really knows how to put a spin on a situation

    Thread Jack

Not that you guys don’t deserve the money for you hard work here, but these adds take up more space than the entries. A full screen add for a Ford truck? Give me a break. Keep the adds if you need to, but please make then less intrusive. I never click on a add that annoyers me, even if I’m interested in the product, just out of principle, and I don’t think I am the only one.

    Respectively.

UVA fans got used to the choking under Welch in the 90’s and have never recovered. They would either choke during the regular season while ranked in the top 10 or get to a bowl and get blown out by a lesser ranked opponent. People expected to lose when it mattered and did not see a reason to pay for it. I can understand that based on some decisions I made sitting in Carter-Finley and watching a VA team march down the field to beat a MOC team. Difference is, when MOC was gone we showed for the Gator Bowl AND the Tangerine Bowl!

Redblogger: Thanks for your feedback. We are still getting the ads worked out. We do this for free, and are looking to off set maintenance costs. We are sorry that you are being annoyed reading something for free….

I think it’s a bold and impressive move by the UVa fan base if this is indeed a response to the administration’s actions. Good for them and good luck to them getting the changes they’re after. Hopefully they can still win the war, though.

This would never work here. One, we’re loyal to a fault and the worst thing anyone can say about us is we’re apathetic (don’t want to be like Carolina fans); two, the WPC BRILLIANTLY set up the LTR system to prevent just such a revolt by our fan base — I’m seven years into my LTRs, what am I going to do, give them up so we get changes around here? That’s what happened with MOC, as attendance declined steadily over his past several seasons…but they effectively prevented this from happening again.

Does anyone have a more detailed description (a link, perhaps) of the VT lovefest at the season finale? (I assume it was in honor of the shootings?)

I hardly implied that reading something free annoyed me (remember, reading competition is your friend). I stated that I thought the ads were too intrusive, they take away focus from the good work you guys do here. I am a big fan of profit, make all that you can, but if this site is made less desirable by the amount of intrusive adds then you are likely to seen diminishing returns.

LRM – “boycotting” a bowl game – if it this in fact is the primary reason that bowl tickets aren’t selling – is actually the dumbest thing they can do.

Boycott a game or two at Scott stadium. Boycott a couple of non-conference game. Do a concessions boycott for this year. However, boycotting a bowl game – when your team has a reputation for not traveling – will only add to you getting worse bowl games and passed over more. In the same vein, the administration doesn’t have positive proof that this is what is driving the change.

It’s like an employee who calls in sick a lot who decides to protest his new benefits package by calling in sick. Is this guy protesting his benefitting or just calling in sick again? Who knows?

    A quick note about ads:

It is a virtual impossibility for there to be a full-page ad generated by Google’s Adwords. For one thing, Adwords do not use graphics other than the very small logo on the bottom right of the box that they are contained within. Other than that, no pictures. Further, the size is hard-coded into the plug-in which handles their generation. This is a very popular plugin for WordPress and the behavior you are describing is not mentioned as a problem that any other webmasters are having across literally thousands of web sites in the blogosphere. Granted, there is a first time for everything, but by comparing the post-install MD5 checksums, we’re finding that the software is precisely as it was when it was installed to the byte.

Further, on a daily basis, I check this site using Internet Explorer 6 in Windows XP, Internet Explorer 7 in both Vista and Windows XP, Firefox 2 and 3 (beta) in XP and also in Safari on a Mac using OS/X Leopard. We do this to make sure that no problems arise. I have never seen anything remotely close to the behaviour being described. Heck, this site rarely if ever even tries to launch a popup, and then only when a link or a photo is set to open a new page. No popups auto-generate from Statefans Nation.

My thought on Redblogger’s situation is that you might be having some trouble with browser highjacking, which is something local to your machine. I cannot say for sure that this is what is happening, but I would check this page out just to be sure:

    http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/advanced/browserhijack.mspx

If you are using Firefox, Google up hijacking for that particlar piece of software.

Finally, we know that in general that there needs to be some evolution of the site’s style and the ads that are contained therein. Stuff like a more direct link to login, some minor layout stuff and some color changes. That’s on the plate for the near-term future now that the holidays are winding down.

Thanks for a couple minutes of your time, guys.

This full page ad has only happen once. It was the type that “floats in from the left side of the screen and stops in the middle and plays a little video, but this one was the size of the entire browser screen, for a Ford truck.

I assumed (maybe wrongly) that it was a google ad.

    Thanks RAWFS

    Not a problem, RB.

One last thing while we’re on the subject of the site’s function is that a great deal has evolved over the last month here: a server move, a new DB core, new core software, a major web server updgrade, and a new base style for the site…all while preserving 100% of the existing content.

That’s all gone on pretty much in the background and isn’t generally visible other than the handful of hiccups we have had. All of it was done to set SFN up to better handle peak usage and also to speed up things generally. After some of the big football games and a couple hoops finals SFN was getting incredible numbers of hit requests, which I view as a testament to the very high analytical and writing qualities of the authors here. We’re lucky (and I am a reader too!) that the guys who write for SFN are some of the very best in the sports blog world.

  16. LRM 12/26/2007 at 2:21 PM #

    Chop,
    I see your point…nice analogy.

But I’m with any fan base that is actively trying to improve their situation…FREEDOMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!

  17. gcpack 12/27/2007 at 1:30 PM #

    WHAT ADS?

AND IF THERE WERE GET INTO THE 20TH CENTURY IF NOT THE 21ST.

SFN HAS PROVIDED A LOT OF VALUABLE INFO FOR A LONG TIME.
SO WHAT IF THERE ARE ADS, IF I COULD FIND THEM.

    NO COMPLAINTS HERE
