I would probably give myself a hernia if Butch Davis gets a new contract after winning three games (I’m assuming they’ll beat Dook). That would absolutely kill me.

Also, the first basketball game is not on TV, the second game will be on TV (Sunday night, I think).

Oh, nearly forgot, you know the coaching carousel is going to have a lot of big names on it this year. I’ll be surprised if (assuming Davis does stay) there aren’t several overtures made to John Blake. Tex A&M, Nebraska, LSU, Michigan, UCLA…they’d all love to make an especially large splash in recruiting for their new coach.

I’d be careful about burying BC prematurely. They have about as much at stake as possible in their game against Clemson. A loss is devastating but a win would be just as good – win the Atlantic Division and just about lock up a Peach or Gator invite even with a loss in the championship game. Bowden has a history at Clemson of losing this type of game.

With one more win and a 6 – 6 record, we are going to be about as attractive to a bowl committee as any ACC team other than Clemson, Virginia or Virginia Tech (assuming a BC loss to Clemson).

Georgia Tech is another coaching situation to monitor. They arer now down to a one game season and it is not against UNC. If they lose to Georgia, I don’t see how Gailey survives.

How Chan Gailey has kept off the hot seat this long befuddles me.

Good point about Blake, Noah. I’d love to see Davis move along, but if Blake goes then all the recruits they are taking from FSU go with him and that would be good enough.

BC is a paper tiger, and I wish we could play them and again. They will lose convincingly to Clemson, and then they will have to fight off Miami at home (yes I saw the Uva game) to avoid the 5/6/7 slot. I think Miami will finish strong, though there is enough talent in BC to outlast them. But recall Miami OWNS BC, all except for one pass in the 80’s. We need them to drop two and we win out, and Champs Sports bowl here we come.

Both Gailey *AND* Hewitt are feeling the heat, I hear.

Guh-Teck is a terrible job, IMO. I wouldn’t go near it.

If Butch leaves…what are the predictions for possible replacements?

I expect Clemson is going to win Saturday. They are playing well, they’re at home and BC is reeling. Plus, the early season unpredictability of BC new-look offense is gone now that there’s plenty of game-film.

That said, BC might find itself in the Champs Bowl or some other similar afterthought bid. You can bet that the Peach and Gator folks are big Tiger fans this weekend — they have a lot of seats to sell for their berth and let’s be honest about it, BC is not an attractive invitee to the big bowls because they don’t really travel. That’s why they got sent to Boise a couple of years ago, and that’s why there are new rules to prevent hopscotching like we saw when the Pack got into the Meineke a couple years ago.

That in mind, I fear that the Pack could be the ones going to Boise. There would be little recruiting advantage in that game, being that it would be difficult if not impossible for your average recruit to fly out to Idaho. On top of that, let’s face it — Boise is a lot less attractive a place to go to in the winter time than any other bowl. I repeat: ANY other bowl.

Best scenario is for the Pack to win out and make its case. A team that would be on a seven game winning streak would be very attractive to the minor bowl reps, especially if said minor bowl is within driving distance of a rabid fanbase that would be howling about the turnaround of a team that was almost as dead as a smushed possum on a dark country road just five weeks ago.

But State has to win out, and I am not at all convinced that will happen. In fact, I am only guardedly optimistic that we will win our sixth. Wake is always a tough game, we always have trouble in WS and Maryland suddenly rediscovered how to run the ball. Thankfully the players seem to have the task at hand at the top of their minds and not on last week or any potential bowl game.

I can’t believe they are talking about getting rid of Hewitt. I don’t think I’d get rid of Gailey either. I think both of them are almost where they need to be. Maybe they should both be given at least through next season.

Then again…who am I to judge? Their fans mighta thought we should keep Amato and Sendek.

They’d be wise to sit on Gailey for at least another year, unless they have some small school coach on their radar. He has been competitive, and GT going up against the likes of Nebraska and Texas A&M will decrease their odds of landing a solid coach.

Seven wins just isn’t the benchmark of consistency it once was, especially now that almost every 6-6 team gets a bowl; a 7-win season now is only one game above .500.

Georgia Tech is a perfect example in the past six seasons, including this one:

2007 (6-4) with UNC and Georgia left
Losses to BC, UVa, VT, MD (No FSU or State)

    2006 (9-5)
Losses to Notre Dame, Clemson, Georgia, Wake, West Virginia (no FSU or BC or WF in regular season)

    2005 (7-5)
Losses to Virginia Tech, State, Virginia, Georgia, Utah (no FSU)

    2004 (6-5)
Losses to Carolina, Miami, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Georgia (no FSU)

    2003 (7-6)
Losses to BYU, FSU, Clemson, Duke, Virginia, Georgia

    2002 (7-6)
Losses to Clemson, Wake, Maryland, FSU, Georgia, Fresno St

They’re 0-5 against Georgia and they’ve only finished more than a single game above .500 once — last season a ACC runner-up at 9-5. It’s a wonder Gailey still has a job with the record against Georgia alone.

  11. JimValvano 11/13/2007 at 1:37 PM #

I didn’t realize that was his record against GA…he should be fired if he loses to them again this year. Beating your rival isn’t only important because you want bragging rights, but it also is a good indicator of the state of your program. It doesn’t look good for Gailey.

Davis is gone at UNX. He wont come out and deny he is leaving, which is not a good sign for the incumbent school. Also, I heard from someone who knows someone who heard someone that Perdue (of chicken fame)is paying for the buyout of Davis’ contract at UNX, and even paying them back for what they paid him in salary this year, essentially giving them a free coach for this year.

I heard Rick Barnes is on Wendell Murphy’s plane as we speak.

^JimValvano, I started to type almost the exact word you did because I saw the same with regards to Duke’s BB team last night. Like you said though, it’s hard to gauge this early and against unknown competition, but they had that familiar Duke intensity and it seemed that at least two Duke players were ready to grab every loose ball on the floor.

It is going to be a very interesting and competitive ACC basketball season.

yes, you cannot underestimate a Coach K coached team. some of you are not impressed with Singler, well he is impressing others. oh and Todd Fuller should replace Hubert Davis on the espn college bb crew.

No one is forcing anyone to show up at 7AM for an 12 kick off. Chances are it will be nippy anyway.
For the xarolina game I arrived in Raleigh at 10:10, picked up #2 son at Wolf Village, went up to KMart and shot straight into the parking lot. Had some tailgate sandwiches and still had almost an hour to kill before the game.
Did I mention that I didn’t get in bed until 1am because our high school (#3 son) had an away game at North Gaston that Friday.
For Thanksgiving weekend, I’d rather have an early kickoff so I can get home early enough to not draw fire from the Mrs.
    Quit complaining.
