Around the ACC

Here are a few random thoughts from around the ACC:

WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE?

Usually I mentally divide the conference into three sections…the elite, the bottom dwellers, and the great mess in the middle. Thru last Saturday, it is pretty hard to figure out where to draw either line:

BC looked to be the most balanced team in the conference, but they have looked pretty unstable the last two weeks. VT is playing without much of an offense. I can’t figure out how UVA and WF are winning anything, let alone the majority of their games. Clemson???….did you see GT and VT destroy them? I have decided that, not only does the ACC not have a nationally elite team, the conference doesn’t even have a team capable of separating themselves from the mess in the middle.

Maryland has lost three straight to move into the bottom tier. State has won three straight and is trying to climb out of the bottom tier. UNC is one loss away from being eliminated from bowl consideration….but is currently tied for third in their division. There’s even time for Miami to finish with a losing record.

Duke is…..well Duke is still Duke.

RIDDLE ME THIS

What do Chris Rix and Reggie Ball have in common?

a) Proof that an erratic QB is not the worst thing that can happen to a team.
b) They are only appreciated in hind sight.
c) They are laughing at the fans that criticized them.
d) All of the above

BORED BEYOND WORDS

There is nothing much more boring than watching a one-dimensional offense (GT) after it has lost its only dimension (Tashard Choice). That’s what I was thinking as I watched the Thursday night game between VT and GT. The second half of that game had to be one of the most boring halves of FB that I have ever watched. And the announcers were simply horrible. They couldn’t seem to find one intelligent thing to say.

– “This helps VT put the BC game behind them.”

Surely you jest. A loss like that will stay on the VT players’ and coaches’ mind through out the rest of the season.

– “You know that Jon Tenuta hates to get beaten like that on a pass down the middle of the field.”

Really? So Tenuta is the only DC in the country that hates giving up a big pass play. You think?

THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES

OK, Jon Tenuta is a good DC. However he should not be beyond criticism….and I think that his defensive philosophy has a huge hole…GT crowds 8 and 9 men in the box and dares you to run (or throw those horrid WR screens that Mazzone and Trestman loved).

I wrote about this last year….GT is vulnerable if throw the ball 5-15 yards down the field and see if your WRs can make a play against man coverage with no safety help deep.

Do you remember the Thursday night a couple of years ago when a State receiver caught a nice 10-12 yard slant….and took it to the house? (This was the game where the winning TD pass was knocked out of Calvin Johnson’s hands.) I saw an eerily similar play this year when MD was playing GT. Third down and four yards to go, turned into a 75+ yard pitch, catch, and long run for a TD.

– Note that both the State and UMD TD pass were down the middle of the field. Something that would obviously come as a surprise to the ESPN crew.

VT (93rd ranked passing team) just passed for nearly 300 yds against the vaunted GT defense. I broke down VT’s plays in the first quarter against GT:

– Glennon was 11/12 for 150 yards
– Glennon was sacked 3 times and scrambled two other times
– Ore had 7 rushes for 21 yards

So in the first quarter, VT passed, or attempted to pass, 17 times and ran the ball 7 times. If you think that this is a typical example of Beamer ball, then you just haven’t seen them play very much.

WHAT’S UP WITH THE TWERPS?

I haven’t seen MD play much this year, but after a three-game losing streak they are in danger of missing a bowl…again. They are sitting at 4-5 with BC, FSU, and State left to play. If UMD finishes with a losing record, that will make three times in the last four years.

Are these injuries from before the UNC game enough to deflect attention from the Fridge?

Injuries Taking a Toll…

– The Terps have been hit by the injury bug in some key areas, RG Andrew Crummey, a preseason All-American, could miss the rest of the regular season after fracturing his left fibula vs. Georgia Tech (Oct. 6).
– Reserve DT Travis Ivey has missed the last two weeks. He suffered a knee injury vs. the Yellow Jackets.
– LB Rick Costa, who was starting for an injured Erin Henderson, incurred a sprained neck vs. the Yellow Jackets and is out indefinitely.
– QB Jordan Steffy sat out vs. Georgia Tech and Virginia after suffering a concussion vs. Rutgers (Sept. 29). He was cleared to play vs. Clemson (Oct. 27).
– The injuries continued the last two weeks. vs. Starting left guard Jaimie Thomas was lost for the season when he fractured his right fibula vs. Virginia (Oct. 20).
– FB Cory Jackson also played most of the Virginia game with a broken hand and missed the Clemson game.
– In addition, DE Mack Frost injured his right knee vs. the Cavaliers and is lost for the season.
– TE Dan Gronkowski left the Clemson game wth a knee injury. He is most likely out this weekend.
– The Terps also lost Alex Wujciak, who was expected to vie for one of the starting linebacker roles, during the preseason.
– In all the Terps will have 13 members of the two-deep miss at least one game (including this weekend) this season due to injury.

Tell the truth…How many people laugh every time they hear Steve Slaton’s name and realize that he is at WVU instead of UMD because the Fridge pulled his scholarship offer? (Think he might have been able to help the Fridge?)

PHOENIX AWARD WINNER

So far, we have four QB’s in the running for the SFN Phoenix player of the year (ie rising from the ashes): Sean Glennon, Daniel Evans, Kyle Wright, and Drew Weatherford.

It’s unusual for one QB to lose their starting job and then get it back….so far it’s happened four times in the conference. Unfortunately for the teams involved, the QB’s that replaced these four didn’t really raise the bar that high.

THE REQUIRED TABLE

No entry from me could be considered complete without at least one table. So here is one summarizing the national rankings of the ACC teams on total offense and total defense:

I’m going to ask everyone to do me a favor and hold any comments about the upcoming State vs Carolina game until we do a game-specific entry later in the week.

Where was CA during the BC-FS game? Maybe I missed it, but I don’t remember seeing him even once on the sidelines. He is usually very near BB.

As much as I HATE to say it.. a down FSU hurts the ACC. The media attention has gone to other conferences. If FSU was #2, the conference would receive so much attention, instead its BC and basically everyone is waiting for them to lose so they can finally say “see.. we told you”. You can also add Miami to this list. Miami was a great “feel good” story at the beginning of the season.. but lose as much as they are and everyone forgets.
The crowds and especially media are very fickle.. has Gameday even been to an ACC game this year? The famous FSU vs UM game was yawner this year.. with no one really caring what happened.

the NCAA upping its academic standards to meet the ACC’s

I missed that in my don’t-tell-me-about-football bunker earlier this fall. If that’s true, then HA! Take that, SEC.

  4. Lunatic Fringe 11/05/2007 at 1:36 PM #

“No one beside Ryan and Skinner would ever start for anyone in the top 2/3 of the SEC.”

^^I disagree with that comment. I actually think Harper is a pretty good QB at Clemson and makes them a tough team to beat if they stay balanced. You could make a very GOOD case that Harper is actually the best QB in the ACC this season.

Statistics: (Pass %, Yards, TD, Int)
    Harper – 65.2%, 2166 yards, 23 TDs, 4 Ints
    Ryan – 59.4%, 2848 yards, 21 TDs, 11 Ints
    Skinner – 73.2%, 1412 yards, 7 TDs, 10 Ints

The problem with Clemson’s offense is that they have been TOO willing to move away from the run. In my opinion, Clemson’s coaching staff panicked in the VT & GT games and did not stick to the game plan…give Davis & Spiller the ball.

Clemson vs. VT – 12 total rushes by Spiller (6) & Davis (6)
Clemson vs. GT – 16 total rushes by Spiller (8) & Davis (8)

^^That^^ is why they lost to VT and GT. It is unforgivable to have those guys run the ball that many times in game given their ability to break open a game with one play. Now…once Clemson establishes the run than Harper excels at picking apart the defense & does so pretty efficiently.

With that said…I honestly cannot believe I just took up for a Clemson player. I feel kind of dirty now…

  5. Lunatic Fringe 11/05/2007 at 1:39 PM #

Correction … Spiller and Davis stats vs. GT should be…

Clemson vs. GT – 21 total rushes by Spiller (9) & Davis (12)

  6. VaWolf82 11/05/2007 at 1:51 PM #

As much as I HATE to say it.. a down FSU hurts the ACC.

A single dominant team does absolutely nothing for the conference it is in…unless you are talking about the value of the TV contract.

  7. roandaddy 11/05/2007 at 1:53 PM #

No offense.. but Harpers stats have come against the mighty football powers of:
La-Monroe, Furman, Central Mich, and Duke.. throw in down years for MD and NCSU.. and you have a pretty darn weak schedule to put up big numbers.
    To go a little further:
    5 tds vs CMich
    5 td vs LAMe
3 td vs Furman –down game

  8. Lunatic Fringe 11/05/2007 at 1:59 PM #

^^You could say the exact same thing about Ryan’s stats.

Army, Bowling Green, UMass, Notre Dame

  9. VaWolf82 11/05/2007 at 2:07 PM #

Good conversations. I enjoy give and take with intelligent people, even if we disagree about the conclusions.

In my opinion, Clemson’s coaching staff panicked in the VT & GT games and did not stick to the game plan…give Davis & Spiller the ball.

Doesn’t the fact that the QB couldn’t lead his team in these situations tell us alot about his abilities?

    vs GT – 17/39 for 194 yds. 1 INT 0 TD
vs VT – 38/67 for 372 yds. 2 INT 2 TD (It would be interesting to break down these yds by half. My memory is that he didn’t do much good in the first half.)

Harper did look good against FSU….but all of Clemson’s other games have been against suspect competition: LA-Monroe, Furman, State, Cent Mich, UMD, and Duke.

  10. Old_Wolf 11/05/2007 at 2:19 PM #

another factor in Clemson’s passing attack is that I think that they lost Jacoby Ford, one of the ACC’s best receivers fairly early on – I think that he is still out.

  11. VaWolf82 11/05/2007 at 2:21 PM #

If anyone knows of a site that breaks down stats by half, I would appreciate a link.

Assuming that I parsed Clemson’s first-half offensive plays versus VT correctly, here is a summary:

    2 FG’s made

    Davis – 2 rushes for 0 yds
    Spiller – 6 rushes for 15 yds

    Harper
    20/32 for 163 yds (0 TDs)
2 INT – one was returned for a TD
    1 sack – lost fumble
    3 rushes for 14 yds

The half-time score was 31-8 and the game was essentially over.

  12. Lunatic Fringe 11/05/2007 at 2:36 PM #

Gametracker has the stats and I will be providing them shortly. 🙂

  13. PAPacker 11/05/2007 at 2:39 PM #

The ACC stats over on Packpride show Yates with 14 interceptions, twice as many as Evans. That surprised me.

  14. EverettBeez 11/05/2007 at 2:46 PM #

Anyone got a link for the NCAA academic standards? I’d sure like to pound our Board of Trustees with that in my drive to keep us in Football Championship “what a crappy name” Subdivision.

    Discussed here:

    UNC System Admission Requirements

  15. Lunatic Fringe 11/05/2007 at 2:47 PM #

    GT Game – 7, -5, 41, -9

The GT game was a one score game throughout and there were lots of special team hiccups through out the game. The 41 yards came mainly from one run by James Davis.

    VT Game – 8, -2, -1, 3

VT was ahead early (first play by Clemson was INT), but Clemson’s offense looked completely flat from the beginning.

  16. Lunatic Fringe 11/05/2007 at 2:52 PM #

I actually think it tells us more about the coaching staff not the QB. You can say the QB never proved he could lead the team, but I do not think the coaching staff even gave him a shot to do so.

The strength of Clemson is their running game mainly due to the horsepower that they have in those backs & you have utilize them in order to stay balanced on offense. Clemson never really tried to establish the run and lost their balance, which made the whole offense stagnant.

Wake shouldn’t be a mystery on why they are winning most of their games. Very well coached, Skinner is pretty damn good to say the least, and they don’t make a lot of mistakes. For what their resources are they have put together an excellent program. I was at the UVa WF game Sat and how in the hell they lost that I do not understand. Well I do understand – they went conservative on O in the 4th when Skinner was chewing up UVa’s defense every series in the 3rd for some reason.
UVa is: a. lucky as hell this year. Happens to teams every once in a while. b. has been recruiting well even though they can’t get some of their recruits in. c. Has the continuity of their coaching system. d. is a team with almost 40 juniors and seniors.
Have seen them play several times and they play with confidence when the game is on the line. Sort of like we have for the last 3 weeks.

I couldn’t find the post, but IIRC Dave Glenn has addressed the differences in academic standards. The ACC bumped their standards up sometime in the recent past and the NCAA will be raising the standards for all D1A schools to match the ACC standards in the next couple years (I believe all that is changing is required core courses). So the ACC has been at a disadvantage recruiting.

I think the advantage/disadvantage of differing standards is overrated, IMO. Who has the #1 recruiting class this year (for now)? – Notre Dame. For all of CTC and Saban’s whining about the Akrons and USFs of the world, you don’t see those teams putting nearly the level of talent on the field as the top-tier programs laboring under tighter standards.

I did, however, find out that only the ACC and Big East had all of their bowl teams from last year meet the NCAA’s new academic standards for graduation rates – http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/bowls05/news/story?id=2248992

This falls into the classic “either or” type argument. If the running game is on then Cullen is a great qb. Again, I say the level of competition for his good games was pretty darn weak. When teams don’t have to put 7-8 in the box to stop the run, he becomes a pretty average qb, if not awful qb. As you said, in the VT game, first play was a pick.
I have never been a big Bowden fan.. even as things stand now, its hard to say they are having a “great year”. His big win is FSU, again a down team.. and a lose to GT.. and the blow out to VT. Sure the stats look great, but most teams would be with the teams they are playing.

Comparing Wake’s performance against UVa to ours makes me feel a little better about that game in Winston Salem. The real thing we should fear about that trip is the artificial turf, which we always seem to play crappy on, and not any sort of home field advantage due to the Wake fans…We should have a darn good turnout of Pack fans for that game. Anyone go to the game year before last? What percentage of the stadium would you estimate was wearing red? At Duke and at Wake are the only two games that you can’t tell who is the home team on the radio based on the crowd reaction…although admittedly, Wake gets a lot more love than Duke. Little over 20,000 at Wallace Wade on Saturday. That is pathetic…I bet 10,000+ of those were Clemson fans.

  21. thebigwood 11/05/2007 at 3:30 PM #

I was there…it looked to be about 40/60 State to Wake

  22. VaWolf82 11/05/2007 at 3:41 PM #

I put the link in the original post, but people must not be seeing it. The differences between the UNC System admission requirements versus the NCAA requirements for core classes was discussed here some time ago.

    http://www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2006/06/18/unc-system-admission-requirements/

The bottom line is that starting with the 2008 freshman class, the NCAA requirements are much closer to the UNC System requirements than over the last two years.

  23. EverettBeez 11/05/2007 at 4:43 PM #

thanks VaWolf82 – from the date it looks like I hadn’t become addicted to reading SFN at that point. But I will look at it now.

does anyone know if espn360 has announced their slate of games for 11/10 and if the UNX game is on there?

“I was at the UVa WF game Sat and how in the hell they lost that I do not understand. Well I do understand – they went conservative on O in the 4th when Skinner was chewing up UVa’s defense every series in the 3rd for some reason.”

If there’s a weakness for Grobe – it’s his game game day coaching decisions. He makes some questionable ones. It’s in his nature – especially offenisvely – to go conservative. I’ve seen Wake lose a lot of close games – and many of those losses were attributable to Grobe’s decisions. Don’t get me wrong – he’s a fantastic coach. His team is well prepped and well-schooled…they’re well-coached. But his games are won beforehand w/ his preparations, emphasis on fundamentals, and his program-building. Once the whistle blows – he’s a mere mortal coach.

“UVa is: a. lucky as hell this year. Happens to teams every once in a while. b. has been recruiting well even though they can’t get some of their recruits in. c. Has the continuity of their coaching system. d. is a team with almost 40 juniors and seniors.
Have seen them play several times and they play with confidence when the game is on the line. Sort of like we have for the last 3 weeks.”

Wake was very lucky last year. They were lucky to beat the 3 worst teams in the conference. But you make your own breaks – and Wake won every game that their talent and the breaks allowed them win. The same thing may happen to UVa, but VaTech will have something to say about it.
