TOB Obsession Continues @ BC

Link

For Boston College’s sake…I sure hope that the Eagles are competing for National Championships while dominating the Wolfpack in years 2009, 2010 and 2011. If not, they are going to have a hard time explaining how their program would be lower than it is today and how State’s would be higher.

I’m just sayin’….

indeed – who cares what they think at BC? their sour grapes about TOB are direct evidence that they know they lost a prize

actually as much as i have a new growing dislike for the BC fans, i actually want this team to do great, just because it makes the BC fans like atleagle more upset…look at their recruiting so far this year and you’ll see why in 2-3 years it could get ugly up there.

Also, NC State is NOT the worst offensive team in the ACC, guess who is, VT. Check this out:
The Hokies rank last in the ACC and 112th in the nation in total offense (286.5 yards a game). In their 17-10 win last Saturday over North Carolina, they had 11 drives. One went 70 yards for a touchdown. The others averaged 13 yards.
“Sherrill, Melvin, Guidry, Bell ?”

I believe that’s correct. Those guys were freshmen in 2000-01.

After Rivers left I thought we’d be OK since we had a stout defense and decent players on offense. I remember Caulton Tudor wrote an article about how our success post-Rivers hinged on the QB play. I didn’t believe it at the time, but he was right. Except for a few teams in the country, the success of your team in college is largely due to how good your QB is, and BC is benefiting from Matt Ryan. Hindsight is 20/20, and it’s easy to see now all the holes Rivers covered up by his play. Look at Notre Dame this year (post Brady Quinn), Virginia post Matt Schaub, even FSU post Weinke or Texas post Vince Young haven’t been the same. There a a few programs in the country who can still win despite weak or average QB’s, but they’re the exception.
Maybe BC will still be good in two years and maybe they’ll go downhill, but I guarantee you it has more to do with who replaces Matt Ryan than who the coach is.

So now they are doing well because of Jags. When they lose one they shouldn’t in November, they will blame it on TOB residuals in the program. I’m sure this keeps coach awake at night.

i remember the good ol’ days of the acc when none of us gave a damn what anyone above the Virginia line thought about us.

Here’s an Dave Glenn article comparing the two “cupboards” that keep getting mentioned:

    http://www.wral.com/sports/blogpost/1883825/

As good as a coach is, he needs players. Jags may be a great coach, but there’s no doubt he’s benefiting from good players. We know TOB is a good coach. I guess BC fans think that TOB benefited from being at the football powerhouse of BC where good players flock no matter who the coach is and who perform well on the field based on the historically good football vibrations that they receive rather than any coaching they receive.

    RedTerror, was that unintentional humor?

“This guy is talking way too soon. ”

Thats the purposr of ATL Eagle. Speak too soon and often. It’s called a blog.

This is a terrible sign for this Coach at BC and the future of the program. That is if the majority of the followers of Football up there think like these “Myth debunker’s”. Complete and utter lack of perspective written in english and organized as to convey a train of thought.

  9. ATL_eagle 10/04/2007 at 5:19 PM #

I think you guys are missing my point and why I took issue with Glenn’s piece. Results in 2007 should mostly be put on the current coach. To say Jags 2007 success is because of TOB and that TOB’s 2007 failures are all because of Amato is false.

To give you some perspective, do you think last season’s NC State basketball team would have been as successful with Herb still in charge? Do you not believe a first year coach can make a big difference on the field: good or bad?

  10. Astral Rain2 10/04/2007 at 5:48 PM #

Well, Basketball more then football is impacted by the coach.

That said, it is too early to tell in either case. Right now, here, TOB did get left with a cupboard full of spoiled cabbage. Can’t do much with it.

ATL_eagle: This year’s BC team has done what was expected of them with TOB or with Jags. They were picked 2nd in the Atlantic division and 3rd overall in the league in the ACC sportwriters pre-season poll. At this point in the season, BC has better offensive stats than last year but sitting at 5-0 isn’t a surprise at all. Of the coaching change, all people agreed that you upgraded at OC and that has proven true so far. Even if you guys make the ACC championship game and a BCS bowl, then that same result could have happened with TOB. This was expected to be the best BC team in recent memory no matter who was coaching the team this year. I remember counting what was returning and there were something like 36 of 44 on the two deep chart returning.

As far as Herb vs. Sidney Lowe, I personally think Sidney is a better game coach. However, nobody knows at this point whether Sidney will be able to consistently recruit through multiple cycles of players which is the most important part of building a college program. At this point, a Sidney Lowe recruit hasn’t stepped foot on the court. Even our success this year will be largely attributed to Herb Sendek recruiting five of our top six players on the roster.

WHAT? Are you really that delusional?

Of course the current coach has a big role in success, a huge role in fact. But in this specific instance, you moron, the new ‘successful’ coach inherited a 10-win team with a Heismann Trophy candidate senior quarterback. The new ‘unsuccessful’ coach inherited a severely depleted 3-7 team on a 7 game losing streak without a functioning quarterback.

I guess the old adage that ‘fans in Boston only care about pro sports’ is slightly off. The accurate adage should be that ‘fans in Boston only understand pro sports.’

  13. joe 10/04/2007 at 6:10 PM #

Sheridan turned his team around fast but he had Kramer at QB who went on to play in the NFL.

  14. gopack968 10/04/2007 at 6:15 PM #

And another thing… the Herb/Sidney comparison is also stupid.

Sidney got more production from Herb’s players than Herb ever did. The team he inherited excelled far above expectations – due to great coaching.

So far Jags has gotten what was expected from a team that won 10 games the year before. If he had inherited a team with low expectations then the comparison would be valid.

I am now officially pulling for the Sox lose the divisional series in 3.

  15. noah 10/04/2007 at 6:29 PM #

“Sheridan turned his team around fast but he had Kramer at QB who went on to play in the NFL.”

And first round draft picks in Haywood Jeffires and Ray Agnew. And long-time NFLers in Mike Cofer and Mark Thomas. And NFL players in Naz Worthen and Danny Peebles.

  16. Cardiac95 10/04/2007 at 7:11 PM #

OMFG… Mike O’Cain looked pretty good for a couple of years as Sheridan’s recruits played out. John Bunting looked pretty good while he had Peppers roaming in the backfield.

Boston College was a consistently good, but not elite program for the eight years prior to their current coach’s arrival. 8-9 wins how many years in a row? And we want to pin their success this year on the new coaching staff?

NC State has been an average to bad D1A program for the last 3-4 seasons. So we’re going to crucify TOB for not getting us to a bowl game in season one?

Lets table this discussion for 3-4 years & get past the honeymoon phase for both coaches. I mean seriously…we nearly gave Herb & Chuck lifetime contracts during the early years.

    Time….as always…will tell.

“I wouldn’t talk if I were us guys. I hear Jags is the next Charlie Weis…”

God, I hope he has the same results as Weis has had so far!!

  18. packgrad2000 10/04/2007 at 7:58 PM #

gopack968: ease up cheetah with the name calling.

ATL_eagle: Thanks for having the courage to post here. I generally think there’s no coach who could have done better than 1-4 at this point at State. And I agree with the above posts that if BC was anything less than 5-0 (or maybe 4-1, GT is decent) BC would be underperforming. Didn’t you read all the pre-seasons stuff on how good you guys were supposed to be? Even TOB said it was his best team ever at BC right when he came to State. None of us here are all that surprised at your success. But give Jags credit – he came in with some pressure to perform and he’s delivered. He most certainly could have dropped the ball, and he hasn’t so far.
It’s not that we think Jags is a bad coach; it’s just hard to tell this early. And Logan is a heck of an OC. A first year coach CAN make a difference, but not at State right now. And the only difference Jags could have made at BC was to go down

  19. Cosmo96 10/04/2007 at 8:07 PM #

The original post on the BC blog is basically “This is how it is because I say so”, but the responses seem to be rather lucid and level-headed in regards to O’Brien. I guess I just expected more vitriol.

…And then the random State fan chimes in and embarrasses us all.

  20. RabidWolf 10/04/2007 at 8:10 PM #

Well, there’s always at least one in every crowd.

And first round draft picks in Haywood Jeffires and Ray Agnew. And long-time NFLers in Mike Cofer and Mark Thomas. And NFL players in Naz Worthen and Danny Peebles.

Ahhhh…..I remember Danny Peebles…1986…..NCSU vs the little cocks from USC……what a nice warm feeling that memory brings.

  22. RabidWolf 10/04/2007 at 8:15 PM #

Wait, that might be the whisky.

  23. RabidWolf 10/04/2007 at 8:18 PM #

BTW, and I don’t mean to monopolize the post, but does anybody know where to find a copy or tape of that ’86 State-USC game? Probably damned near impossible to find, but any info would be helpful.

  24. RabidWolf 10/04/2007 at 9:39 PM #

YES!! BC is a very bad geographical fit for the ACC…..who the hell wants to go to Boston????? For ANY reason!

  1. ESPN/ABC Has Some Interesting Regional Coverage Plans « Tar Heel Fan - 10/04/2007

[…] The three games in question at 3:30 on Saturday are Oklahoma at Texas(yellow), Iowa at Penn State(blue) and NC State at Florida State(green) Obviously the Red River Shootout is going to get the largest coverage area with the respective conferences filling out the rest of map with one odd exception. Maryland and Virginia are mostly excluded from the NCSU-FSU viewing area while eastern MA and southern NH are included in what I assume is the ACC viewing area. This strikes me as odd and also illustrates how bad of a geological fit BC is for the ACC, but what’s done is done right? It just seems curious that ESPN/ABC would exclude the Virginia, Virginia Tech and Maryland campuses from the rights to view an ACC game in favor of a Big 12 game while including MA and surrounding areas for the Wolfpack’s trip to Tallahassee. My question is what was the impetus for including Boston on the ACC game and not VA and MD? Are BC fans obsessed with Tom O’Brien to the point ESPN feels the need to show NC State games to the folks in New England? And while we are at it where the heck was this kind of coverage during the 2000 NCAA Tournament when I was living near Boston and unable to watch UNC play Tennessee because of regional coverage rules which stuck me with some Big East school and relegating me to watching the ticker at the bottom of the screen to see if the Heels were winning?
