2007 Football Roster

I want this entry to be treated a little differently than our normal blog entries. I have cross-referenced the roster from gopack.com to the recruting classes listed on scout.com to separate the gopack roster into scholarship and walk-on athletes. I then further divided the scholarship athletes into position and class.

I’m pretty good with EXCEL and the VLOOKUP command, but there are many opportunities for mistakes. So I am asking for help in checking this roster and to identify any mistakes that I have made. Based on some of the comments in recent football entries, I am pretty sure that some of you have already done this type of work.

I am not interested in getting any more opinions about the players and/or coaches on this entry. (What are the odds that there is really anything new to say?) Let’s keep those types of comments for other threads and let’s try to concentrate on facts.

In addition, I would like for commenters to include any other pertinent information that would logically fit into a fact-finding entry. Please include a link or source for any such information.

– Note: A link to a message board entry is not a source. I’m talking about real facts and solid sources.

Here are some examples of additional information that would be interesting to include along with a complete roster:

OL: The death spiral, the long road to recovery, and three steps to get there

NC State Reaches 8 Knee Surgeries

And a new one:

GRADE INFLATION

One of the fallacies of the way recruiting classes are graded is that athletes are often counted in two different recruiting classes. Going back to the 2003 recruiting class (red-shirt seniors), I found the following double entries for State.

Kane has had concussion problems and I have heard from very good authority that his football career is over. I think he would have been a sr this year at any rate. He hasn’t played a down this year.

I could have sworn that Jimmaul Simmons was a recruited scholarship player. Not to be confused with Jamaine Clemmons.

On the topic of NC State and walk ons, I saw this on GoPack.

Beard is a versatile athlete. In high school, he also participated in football, lacrosse and track. He was twice named all-state in the high jump and was a recruited tight end in football. In fact, Beard says, if the Wolfpack football team keeps losing tight ends, he might have to approach Wolfpack head coach Tom O’Brien about joining the squad.

Interview of frosh BBall player Clayton Beard. Bring it!

“I could have sworn that Jimmaul Simmons was a recruited scholarship player. Not to be confused with Jamaine Clemmons.”

You are correct, I got those two mixed up. My mistake.

    Great entry & comments.

Here’s a sliver of optimistic thought about this train wreck of a roster – It is possible that we can add as many as 30 (5 enroll in January & 25 in August) new scholarship players to the 2008 team. I doubt we would go this high in one year but over the next 2 years, I suspect we will sign more players than anyone in the league. It goes without saying that we need these to be quality players at every position.

Linney, Ellis, Manning (remember reading that somewhere), who else would enroll early?

  6. noah 10/10/2007 at 11:52 AM #

    manning wont be enrolling early.

  7. Par Shooter 10/10/2007 at 12:16 PM #

Isn’t enrolling early typically an option for JuCo guys?

  8. statered 10/10/2007 at 3:09 PM #

    subtract Manning, add Maddox

One small correction. Goodman is in his fourth year of college but the wrestling roster lists him as a redshirt junior. Although he transferred from Nebraska, he never participated in athletics there, so he has next year still. I know it’s not really important to our discussion, but wanted to bring it up since I’ve been following the State wrestling team. He’s the only hire of Fowler’s to exceed expectations (which is phenomenal considering Guzzo’s record before him).

  10. SaccoV 10/10/2007 at 9:31 PM #

Previous “he” refers to wrestling coach Carter Jordan!!

^ “He’s the only hire of Fowler’s to exceed expectations”

SaccoV – I’d add Lisa Navas (softball coach) to that list. The softball program is actually Fowler’s crowning achievement at NC State. He founded the program and it has been surprisingly successful. The overall performance record is clearly woeful.

Thanks RickJ. Shouldn’t have left her off.
