Quick ACC/Big East Thought

Much has been made over the ACC’s recent struggles on the gridiron, especially in light of the Big East’s recent success (SFN is still skeptical such will be sustained, long-term). This will likely be on display for the nation tonight, as Maryland battles West Virginia.

As a friend of mine noted today – how wide would that chasm be if the initial plan went through, and the ACC had added Syracuse instead of Boston College? Feel free to use this as a Thursday night game thread.

At least we wouldn’t finish at the bottom of our division.

    Here’s a thought to ponder:

Would TOB still be our coach today if BC wasn’t in the ACC? Would State have even been on his radar if he hadn’t come to Raleigh and seen the passion of our fanbase and all the improvements that had been made since his last visit to CF?

    Scary…

Even scarier would have been playing Syracuse twice/year in basketball… We would have set records for 3’s jacked up over that zone defense of theirs.

Enjoyed the article about Riddick. I spent better than a half of my first semester at State in the fall of 1963 living in one of the dorm rooms in Riddick before enough people flunked out so I could move to Alexander.

We had some great times on Friday nights when Broughton would play there and even better times on Saturdays when State played there.

I’ve found the first disadvantage to watching a football game in High Definition – a clearer more detailed picture of the Maryland student body.

Has Maryland ever won when they have attempted the Black Out?

  8. BoKnowsNCS71 09/14/2007 at 8:50 AM #

I thought Maryland was going to make up for last year’s embarassment. But they found more ways to look inept.

Last night was the first time that I’ve seen Fridge make a lot of questionable offensive calls. MD’s OL was killing the WVU front 7 in the first half. Still, the Terps kept running various screens and short passes instead of just ramming the ball down WVU’s throat. It was pretty stupid ball, especially given that the MD QB’s decision making was less than impressive (threw at least one HORRIBLE INT).

Once WVU opened up the O, that game was over. Noel Devine is the truth, Baby. That guy has crazy lateral movement and vision skills. For my money, he’s about as good as Slaton right now, just doesn’t quite have the same outrageous speed (nobody does really).

I’m starting to believe that the ACC has a REAL FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEM when it comes to football. It just seems that the below average performance is to wide spread throughout the league. It seems to have started 3 years ago. What happned 3 years ago? Is that when the league implemented higher acadamic requirements?

    Something is really wrong.

^It’s alarming to say the least. It’s been a very sub-par performance league-wide thus far, save GT, Clemson and BC. We’re taking our lumps. I hope better years are ahead.

Looking back over the years – frankly the ACC has not been a great football conference. Clemson had its heyday, but that’s about it.

What looks so dismal now is that the two “powerhouses” we brought in – Miami and Florida State – are now mediocre. Florida generates fantastic recruits, and for a good 10-15 years Miami and Florida State (and UF) grabbed them all, generating tremendous teams. But the word got out, and as assistant coaches left those schools, Florida recruiting became the worst kept secret in college football.

Miami and FSU haven’t recovered, and unless and until they regain a competitive edge in recruiting, their glory days are over.

Good old NCSU has suffered from poor coaching over the years – but Amato did raise the facilities and visibility of the program. TOB has a good foundation to build on, we’re just a year or two away from success, IMO.

Given the situation in Florida, no ACC school has the recruiting advantages of power teams like Texas or USC, or top SEC schools, so it’s an uphill climb for ACC football all the way around. Still, with consistent good coaching (which I think TOB can deliver), we’ve got a shot.

Clemson had its heyday, and GT was a major force many moons ago.

  16. haze 09/14/2007 at 10:58 AM #

^ As was Maryland until Ross left and even Duke if you go far enough back.

Speaking of Florida recruits, maybe the fact that Noel Devine went to West Virginia instead of Miami or FSU has something to do with their mediocrity lately. how do you let him get away? he was unbelievable, and FSU did offer him.

Fridge looked bigger last night than i ever remember.. I hope he can work that out one day sooner than later.

thanks for the link drewhuff – good story on riddick.
State didn’t voluntarily play some games away, it was no one would come and play in Riddick, which was too small, etc. We had to travel. As awesome as it is to have a stadium on campus, moving out to Finely Meadows was a great move. Now building the basketball arena out there . . . Well, just look at today’s N&O story about the CIAA trying to make Charlotte’s DOWNTOWN arena their permanent home for their tourny speaks volumes.

Speaking of Riddick, Section Six had a great post on Wolfpack Football history with old pictures from the University Archive. I love this type of stuff.

    Yes.

We were not the only job he inquired about.
