Wolf Pack Steal from Wolfpack

Did someone swipe toughie?

This topic came up last week and is covered by S6 in this blog entry that links to a Technician article. The N&O also covered the topic in this article last week. Additionally, the Wizard of Odds is covering the situation in his/her national blog.

Nevada

We always get particularly interested when business and sports intersect. I don’t want to be overly critical, but I am surprised at how ‘accepted’ it seems to be that the folks at NC State have been oblivious to this potential trademark infringement for over TWENTY YEARS! I’ve notice this many times in the past and made the mistake of presuming that an arrangement had been brokered between the parties. Never would have I thought that the folks at NC State were so disconnected to the world that they weren’t even aware of it.

I wonder if the fact that we won our last national championship at Albuquerque’s wolves den and had their fans on our side — that there might be some willing oversight to their using and altering our older mascot images. Probably not true but just a thought.

Wonder if there will be a suit to cease and get damages or just an agreement on a percentage of profit for use of it on an ongoing basis?

Their logo is an exact match of our old toughie. Did we hold on to it?

  3. StateFans 06/11/2007 at 9:43 AM #

    ^Yes.

New Mexico Lobos != Nevada Wolf Pack

Well, at least Nevadans could see how cool Tuffy is. We’ve seen a decline in use of that logo in recent years, as evidenced by the athletics dept.s’ baffling desire for, and use, of the Three Drowned Rats logo.

    Tuffy is Da Wolf.

Channel 9 news here in Charlotte (home of the bluest Tarheel sports guy on the planet, Harold Johnson) did a brief piece on the 6 o clock news last week. Fluff piece, nothing new, must have been a SND.

Assuming we have known about this potential infringement for 20 years and have not done anything about, it will certainly mean any effort we put into defending the logo will fail.

One of the responsibilities of having a trade mark is to ‘vigorously’ defend its use by others. If we have not vigorously defended the mark in the past, then it means that we cannot decide to enforce the mark as it might be convienient to us now.

imitation is the sincerest form of flattery – but that doesn’t make it ok

we should get out there and protect our trademark

and whoever came up with that bright idea in nevada should be wearing a dunce cap

I wonder if the Wisconsin Badgers are scratching their heads over this. Although to be fair, ours is a wolf and theirs is a badger. It isn’t our fault they both have the same taste in clothing….

I never knew his name was “toughie”!!! I personally think he is the best logo NCSU has. I would prefer to have him on the MENS basketball court instead of the ladies-and I think I have said this more then a few times.

I have always pulled for the Wolf Pack, but this kind of irritates me. There is no way this was a mistake. they are THE SAME wolf with a diffrent hat.

  14. RAWFS 06/11/2007 at 2:44 PM #

I always thought it was “Tuffie…”

  15. buttPACKer 06/11/2007 at 2:59 PM #

I always thought uit was “tuffy” as well, and I agree. . . He’s the coolest mascot image we have, and we should use him more often!!

  16. buttPACKer 06/11/2007 at 3:00 PM #

the “strutting wolf’ version, i mean.

I say a good settlement for this is a home and home and some promises.
    Start a rivalry or something.

Give Sid another good opponent to play. Yeah I prefer the old logo myself.

  18. RabidWolf 06/11/2007 at 10:44 PM #

We should definitely use tuffy more often than we do!! He’s the center court logo at the RBC (James T. Valvano arena) and should be proudly displayed at the 50 yard line of CFS as well! While I love the ‘block S’ design and was glad to see it revived,(I always HATED the damned preppy sweaterish ‘NSC’ during the Sheridan era) tuffy signifies the attitude and confidence that defines the ‘Pack!

I bought one of these hats and will be wearing it to a game or two this year.

    Hilarity shall ensue.

  20. packbackr04 06/12/2007 at 11:43 AM #

lets do a little home and home with Nevada. winner takes all, including the rights to TUFFY.

  21. redfred2 06/12/2007 at 5:25 PM #

Better watch out, considering TomA’s perfection discription earlier, Nevada will take over all rights to that logo if anyone pushes them too much over it.
