Way Too Early Bowl Projections (Sun Update below the fold)

This year’s bowl schedule has just recently been solidified, so Fox Sports thought it was a good time to project this year’s bowl games.

For a more clear look at this year’s bowl schedule, you can click here.

I guess this is what you do in the dead months of the summer.

Fox selects:

* LSU to battle USC for the National Championship

* Virginia Tech to win the ACC Championship and play in the Orange Bowl

* Georgia Tech to go back to the Gator Bowl (which we don’t think is much of an option)

* Miami to play Pitt in Charlotte.

* Maryland to play in the Peach Bowl in a rematch of their last Peach Bowl appearance when the spanked Tennessee.

* East Carolina to earn a 2nd consecutive bowl bid.

You will note that the exercise included a list of “other teams considered” for each bowl selection. NC State wasn’t even considered for a single bowl game by Fox.

While we are talking about bowls, you can click here to see an very interesting review of the television ratings from last year’s bowl games. I think that the performances of some of the bowls will surprise you. The Emerald, Meineke and Champs Sports Bowls of the ACC all performed better than I think many people would have expected. (We would be letting you down if we didn’t link up this entry from last bowl season that makes fun of the ‘turnout’ for the PapaJohns bowl.)

Does our new coach have any experience in getting teams into bowl games? Does he have any talent to work with?

They seem way too high on GA Tech

I could see us making a trip to Charlotte… I am hoping for more, but expect nothing.

I feel like they are disproportionately more high on Maryland than GT compared to pre-season expectations. GT’s new QB looked very good in last year’s bowl game.

It’s interesting how the media raved about our steal in TOB. Then, in this preseason prediction, we’re not even considered for any bowls. The removal of CTC IMO was at the right time, but according to this analysis, it may should have been a year earlier. I’m not a scout or talent evaluator, but the media assessment says our cupboard is quite bare.

“It’s interesting how the media raved about our steal in TOB. Then, in this preseason prediction,…”

That kind of stuff takes some time to wear off. It’s just the media’s intrepretation of NC State athletics as a whole, and as related to by the administration and the SID.

Given our performance the past two years, where do you expect we would be ranked. We are going to be ranked in the bottom third of the conference until we prove otherwise, new coach or not.

I will be shocked if Wake wins the title this year. Last year, they were lucky to beat Duke, us and the Heels. This year, I don’t think that all the breaks go their way. I do think they’ll be good, but I don’t think they win our division.

I think FSU probably returns to the top. I’m also excited to see if improve in the area of execution, OL and QB play. IF we can do that and our D remains decent, look out.

As for GaTech – the loss of Calvin is huge…we’ll see how they fare w/out him since the last 3 years he’s been so crucial to their offense.

Does he have any talent to work with?

Here, let me fix that for you:

“Has he found any new talent for the most important position on the field?”

Based on State’s QB play the last several years, absolutely no one is going to project State to do anything this year. Unless the QB play is substantially improved, I won’t expect too much either.

That’s not imply that QB is the only position where State has struggled or the only area of concern for this year. But until State gets productive play from the QB, we won’t see many/any significant wins on the field.

IMHO – the qb play you saw the last 3 years was a direct result of coaching. Lightning doesn’t strike 3 years in a row. When our QB play was adequate we did well. I think our QBs had adequate talent – at least if you believe the recruiting services they did…

IMHO – the qb play you saw the last 3 years was a direct result of coaching.

Maybe, maybe not… but it sounds like wishful thinking to me.

  16. RAWFS 06/04/2007 at 9:23 AM #

The QB play was hindered by coaching, but it was killed by the utter lack of a decent OL.

  17. noah 06/04/2007 at 9:31 AM #

In college, when a team struggles, people blame the coaches. In the pros, when a team struggles, people blame the players (unless Lou Pinella is the coach, when it’s a good idea to blame both the players and the coaches).

There’s a little talent in our program. We have two NFL-caliber running backs, we have a good college TE, and a handful of other players that just about any program would like to have.

But I think if you did a dispersal draft of our players, I don’t think you would find many takers for our OL and QBs. I could be wrong…

  18. McPete 06/04/2007 at 2:21 PM #

Coming out of HS, I think you’d find some takers for the QBs. Stone was highly regarded, and didn’t Louisville offer Burke? as well as mich state, and tennesse? Petrino’s had some good qbs come through that campus.

As far as the running backs go, the NFL has no room for running backs who don’t follow their blocks, don’t pick up in pass coverage, and don’t hold on to the ball. Not that there isn’t potential, but without improvement at least one of the running backs won’t sniff the field at the next level.

  19. noah 06/04/2007 at 3:54 PM #

I’m not talking about recruiting mistakes. I’m saying that if we disbanded the team and other schools got to draft our players, I don’t think you’d find many takers for our QBs. Or most of our OL, for that matter.

I think both Baker and Brown will get drafted. As long as you’ve got the raw talent, they think they can teach the rest. Look at Willie Parker.

    Long way to go…

  20. McPete 06/04/2007 at 4:10 PM #

I just think there is more talent at the QB position than maybe we’re giving credit for. And I think that while Baker is the more complete college back, he lacks the top end speed to be a starting tailback in the NFL. I hope i’m wrong, but he doesn’t win many foot races right now. Brown, however, has the speed and size that the NFL covets. but he fumbles, misses blocks, etc.

  21. noah 06/05/2007 at 9:48 AM #

One of the best things that Baker and Brown have going for them is that they aren’t the ONLY ball-carrier for their team. So they won’t be worn down the way so many marquee backs are when they get there.
