Donovan Pulling the Ultimate Cremins?

Read this from Andy Katz:

Billy Donovan informed the Magic and the University of Florida over the weekend that he had second thoughts about agreeing to be Orlando’s head coach, but it’s unclear if the NBA team will let him go.

Orlando has a signed contract from Donovan and are making a decision as to whether or not to let him out of the five-year, $27.5 million deal that he signed Thursday, multiple sources told ESPN.com Sunday.

If the Magic do let Donovan out of the deal, they have to decide whether to enforce a financial penalty. Both sides aren’t talking publicly since there are legal issues involved in such a decision.

If the Magic enforce a monetary penalty, maybe Donovan can pay it by signing a shoe deal with Flip-Flop.

Maybe he get on A&E’s new show “Fake This House” sponsored by Armour All. This week, they’ll be at Bill Belichick’s New York Jets office, painting the walls blue, red and silver.

How could they not enforce a financial penalty? This accepting a job and reneging stuff is getting out of hand.

It happens in the non-sports world too. I don’t envy that decision.

^ He should have taken more time, thought it through carefully and then made the call he felt was the right thing.

As it is, he took another job, then almost certainly got more cash thrown at him by the Gators. Then he has “second thoughts.”

    Meh.

^ That’s a big assumption. You think the gators offered him NBA-type money?

The story in the Charlotte Observer says Donovan hasn’t signed the contract. He’s agreed to be the coach, but the contract hasn’t been signed.

I am sure Florida’s recruiting competition is going to love this.

I had read Donovan saying he was “pressured to make a decision on the spot” so he did. The more he thought about it, the more he realized it was the wrong decision.

I also read the Magic were letting him out of the contract.

    Some fun reading at:
    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/amjump?page=amjump/070604

    which included this . . .

“Odds on why Billy Donovan wants out of Orlando:
5 to 1 Found out Auburn and South Carolina were not on Orlando’s conference schedule
4 to 1 Kids wanted to go to Disney World every friggin’ day
3 to 1 Felt quitting was a quick and easy way to have a better NBA career than his mentor, Rick Pitino”

Hey, don’t be so hard on Donovan, he played college ball and I’m sure to him, this contract was something akin signing a LOI. Those sports guys have to learn about “real life” contractual obligations the hard way.

If an NC State coach won 2 national championships and pulled the same thing would you be happy?

Heck, I’m glad he came back – better for college basketball.
