Two Big Administrative Announcements: Fowler Gets Extension, Radio Switches to 101.5FM

One good announcement; one bad announcement.

First, the good news. NC State has entered the 21st century of FM radio coverage.

NC State officials announced today that an agreement has been reached involving its rights holder, Wolfpack Sports Marketing, and Capitol Broadcasting Corporation to partner with CBC station Mix 101.5 WRAL-FM. The agreement moves Wolfpack sports programming to the FM side of the dial and solidifies NC State’s flagship radio partnership through the 2016-2017 seasons.

Mix 101.5 WRAL FM is one of the most powerful (100,000 watt) and popular stations in the Triangle and surrounding areas. Radio broadcasts for the Football and Men’s Basketball season will move to Mix 101.5 starting with the NC State vs. Central Florida football match-up on Sept. 1. “Our relationship with NC State has been a great one over the years and we are extremely excited about expanding our affiliation with the University through this radio broadcast agreement,” Jim Goodmon, President of CBC said.

WCMC 99.9-FM will carry the weekly Tom O’Brien and Sidney Lowe coach’s call-in shows on Monday nights. The first Tom O’Brien show will debut on Monday, August 26, 2007. The Wolfpack Sports Network’s coverage of the ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament will also be carried on WCMC-FM, with the exception of NC State games broadcast on Mix 101.5 WRAL FM.

Now, the horrible news.

Lee Fowler, N.C. State’s athletics director since 2000, has signed a contract extension through 2013.

Wow.

Gopack has paid streaming of Pack games so it’s not likely WRAL will stream games for free since nobody would pay for them.

  2. PortAuthority 04/26/2007 at 2:10 PM #

It’s about time that our games will be on FM. Carolina has been there for years.
Now we need to get the coaches TV shows on at a decent time like Duke and Carolina.

I just e-mailed them to ask. Will let you all know what I find out.

“Quoted a booster (unnamed) who raises hogs in the southern part of the state down I-40 as being pleased with the change, because he picks up WRAL much better than WPTF.”

Doesn’t Goodman (? WRAL owner) give a bunch of Benji’s to the university? I’ve never heard of Curtis (WPTF- Curtis Media) giving anything to State, not to say he doesn’t I’ve just never read that he has. Seems like after a lifetime of State giving him the contract there would be something named after him.

The Pack on FM radio??? Great.

Now I can watch the games on cable, and play the radio broadcast from the stereo without the annoying AM whine through the speakers.

Not to mention, the annoying whine from some of the TV broadcast crew…

  6. ToddKeune 04/26/2007 at 3:23 PM #

^^^COOL!!! Just got e-mail from WRAL regarding my question about streaming the Pack games. Figured they would, since the rest of their day is streamed live….

“Todd, yes, we will stream the broadcast, unless some unforseen circumstances cause us to alter our plans”

  7. noah 04/26/2007 at 3:26 PM #

“Is there any reason RAL wont have the games streaming like the rest of thier broadcast?”

Usually, radio stations pre-empt their internet streams when sporting events come on. It’s part of the contract to carry the games.

If you’re really willing to dig, you can google a list of stations that carry a team’s games and then, one-by-one, access the station during gametime and try and get a feed. 99.9% of the time, those stations will either not offer an internet stream or they will broadcast something else.

There is still a station that offers the Atlanta Braves games on radio. It’s a tiny little station and they’ve slipped through the cracks. If you look around Braves’ blogs, you can find it. But those types are very rare.

  8. noah 04/26/2007 at 3:27 PM #

“unless some unforseen circumstances cause us to alter our plans”

Yeah, like the folks who offer the Yahoo! stream point out that THEY have the exclusive rights to internet feeds of NC State basketball and football.

“Now I can watch the games on cable, and play the radio broadcast from the stereo without the annoying AM whine through the speakers.”

But you’ll still have the delay, right?

according to pack pride, Fowler’s salary is $245,000 a year, and for the first time I have some appreciation for lee.

all respect to everone, etc., but $245k ain’t gonna make anyone rich these days. with the pressure and criticism Lee endures (no matter how fair or well deserved), I’m astonished that he’s willing to do it.

i’d actually rather see us pay someone really good a higher amount. i wonder what AD’s at the SEC schools are getting — maybe we get what we pay for.

  11. lush 04/26/2007 at 3:57 PM #

you think lee deserves more than $245k? doctors, lawyers, business owners and lee fowler AD. which one of these seems way out of place?

  12. old13 04/26/2007 at 4:01 PM #

” . . . but I have met the man, and you can’t hate him once you meet him.”

We’re not talking about personal feelings toward Foulup; it’s his incompetence we feel shortchanged about. I liked Herb. But I wouldn’t want him for the NCSU BB coach ever. He (and Foulup) are incapable of moving NCSU to a top level in sports.

  13. lush 04/26/2007 at 4:08 PM #

245k * 13 years is over $3mil. plus perks and bonuses, and MAYBE a 25 hour work week. boy times must be changing cause i would consider that pretty well to do.

  14. Sam92 04/26/2007 at 4:09 PM #

lush, my point would really just be this: if we want a first class AD, shouldn’t our AD be paid what those successful professionals get paid, or something close to it?

that’s why i wonder what AD’s are getting paid at the SEC schools (anyone have intel on that?) or, what do the AD’s get paid at FSU, Miami, or even Clemson?

i have this sinking feeling that AD’s at schools with better programs are being paid substantially more than Lee, and if that’s the case, our problem is both higher and bigger than just Lee.

  15. lush 04/26/2007 at 4:24 PM #

sam, i see what you mean, and i think that someone who has had more success should be paid accordingly. i just dont think lee deserves what he is getting paid (whatever the amount) much less a raise/extension.

  16. Rick 04/26/2007 at 4:25 PM #

So you have absolutely no idea what other ADs are paid (mush less one doing a comparable job) and so, just guessing, you think he is underpaid?

Personally I think he is overpaid. I would be glad to lower his pay and pay him “by the championship”. Based on past performance we will come out ahead.

We for sure do not want to pay him by “word uttered”. We would go broke.

  17. lush 04/26/2007 at 4:26 PM #

usually, the man makes the money, money does not make the man.

  18. lush 04/26/2007 at 4:29 PM #

right on rick, performance based pay for Lee the same way C-lowe and Obie have their contracts set up.

  19. highstick 04/26/2007 at 4:43 PM #

Here’s an excerpt from the 2005 minutes of Eric Hyman’s contract at South Carolina:

“Chairman Adams recognized Mr. Parham who outlined the essential terms of the
contract. The contract term will cover a period of five years beginning
July 1, 2005 and ending June 30, 2010. Base salary and annual supplemental
compensation package would total $375,000 per year. The contract would also
contain the opportunity for Mr. Hyman to earn performance based incentive
compensation not to exceed $75,000 per year.
In addition, the University will establish a tax deferred retirement fund for
him at the rate of $50,000 per year; that contribution will be made on June 30th for
each year that Mr. Hyman remained as the athletics director during the term of the
contract. And, he would receive that benefit only if he remained as athletics
director until the termination date of June 30, 2010.

  20. Sam92 04/26/2007 at 5:11 PM #

some quick googling indicates AD salaries

    LSU $425,000
    UGA $313,425
    TN $261,500

  21. Rick 04/27/2007 at 7:24 AM #

AT least you got some information to base your opinions on this time.
I still think LF is overpaid.

I hope there is no buyout clause in case someone is crazy enough to want him they can have him.

  22. lush 04/27/2007 at 9:29 AM #

if the ad at tennessee is making the same as lee, then it is obvious that lee is grossly overpaid.

I’ve been away for a few days, but there are some posts on this thread that are beyond belief.

    examples:

“Why should I listen to people who don’t like the job Fower is doing?

These are the EXACT same people who just a few short years ago thought *Sendek was the next John Wooden*, and Amato was the next Bear Bryant!”

SAY WHAT, Joe?!!! Then later, you follow up with…

“Bo Rein and Lou Holtz left for better jobs, but that was a long time ago. Valvano wanted to leave for UCLA but did not because of his buyout.

A few years back a tennis coach left for a better job, I think it was the women’s tennis coach.

NCSU coaches now either retire or get fired.”

One coach left on his own, after a decade long engagement, the other was fired after seven years, but it didn’t seem that it was Lee Fowler who wanted to pull the trigger in that situation either. And finally, who has retired lately?

Ummm, what in the hell does any of that have to do with Lee Fowler’s job performance???
