A Perfect Illustration of Why Everyone Hates Duke

Interesting that it would be perfectly synposized by a DBR piece “explaining” why everybody hates poor, noble, righteous Duke. You have to hand it to them, they sure know who to whine – every bit as much as their coaches and players. Strawmen abound – enjoy taking apart you favorite ones in the comments below.

Hat tip to Deadspin for calling this to our attention. Don’t miss the delightfully named Nation of Islam Sportsblog’s response (wow, did DBR ever miss the joke – no surprise given their past history with SFN). In the interest of balance, we also link to a nice explanation of UNC hatred.

Also, don’t miss Dave Sez’s comments on the topic.

We know how sensitive and humorless Duke fans can be, so we will clarify again for the record that we totally don’t think you are as bad as Nazi Germany, or that Coach K was responsible for the Holocaust. Promise.

I could not even read that tripe it was so stupid.
I have not really had a dislike fo Duke in the past but the style of basketball this year, added to the fact that they get all the calls, just really set me off.

  2. beowolf 04/04/2007 at 9:15 AM #

    I don’t hate Duke.

I do, however, find it rather “Duke-like” to write a thesis based on question-begging.

  3. PAPacker 04/04/2007 at 9:32 AM #

The DBR piece is so pathetic and narcissistic I can only feel embarassed for them.

  4. choppack1 04/04/2007 at 9:37 AM #

Who wrote that a 12 year old??

What this article is really about is the changing landscape of college basketball. The last few years have seen the Duke machine cough a little bit. There is no evidence the slide is going to change.

I might respect DBR’s take a little more if they admitted that they did get some calls. If they said, “Yea, I understand why folks don’t like us. Wojo, Paulus, Koubek and Laettner did come across as prep school punks.”

They don’t – they fight the conspiracy theorists by creating their own.

Me, I still hate the Heels a lot more. However, those bandwagon Duke fans are giving them a run for my $$. And yes, I enjoy seeing long faces on those Cameron Crazies who for years have gloated way too much in their victories.

Freaking hilarious! They are so “senstiive” that they miss the humor. The Nation of Islam guotes were gonzo journalism that even Hunter Thompson would applaud.

If they can’t take the jokes, they need to get a life. Sainthood is only possible this century for the late Pope John Paul — never Duke.

That’s a lot of rage from the dookies. How dare we marginalize and mock this shining beacon of college athletics? Because they are such an easy target.

Once Roy became head coach (a decent man who believes in the State/Carolina rivalry), Duke became my clear most hated team. I can hate UNC with a modicum of respect with Roy there. Having my all-time most hated Dukie (Chris Collins) on the bench seals the deal. If one of Duke or UNC has to be good, I’d rather it be UNC. I want to see a nationally hyped State/Carolina matchup with both teams in the Top Ten. And I want JJ to dunk all over “Psycho T.”

I would love to see Duke knocked back down to #3 in the Tobacco Road pecking order, where they rightly belong.

Man, who licked the caviar of the DBR’s silver spoon?

I’ve gone on record as saying I despise Duke more than other school a couple of times, but it has more to do with how K’s clutching and grabbing is ruining the game of basketball than with whiny prep school brats who dont understand that the world isnt their oyster shell.

Still, I love the DBR article. Its the perfect outcry of every little spoiled prep school child when he discovers that the world is bigger than his daddy’s bank account. Its just not fair.

And I love the anti-white angle while bashing Stuart Scott. Kudos to The Nation for jumping on that. And in the white-bashing mode, I’d love to hear which Maryland player the Duke fans have hated the most….

The fact that statefansnation would side with a raciest NOI site, is enough to make me puke. And talk about whining, what do you call this? Duke this and Duke that, cheese anyone? Maybe yall could change color scheme and call this uncfansnation?

  10. beowolf 04/04/2007 at 10:06 AM #

BJD, as long as K is there, I can’t hate Duke. I can be annoyed by the “Duke” things, but Coach K was a stalwart friend in need to James T. Valvano, and I will never forget that.

  11. Mr O 04/04/2007 at 10:16 AM #

Are we supposed to feel sorry for Duke now?

  12. BJD95 04/04/2007 at 10:17 AM #

^^^ The NOISB is very clearly a parody site, almost certainly written by middle-aged white guys. Note that their blogroll links to Deadspin, and Deadspin-like sites. Let’s not miss the joke as badly as DBR did. Please.

  13. highonlowe 04/04/2007 at 10:25 AM #

    statealum03-NOI is a joke.
How do people not realize that Nation of Islam Sportsblog is a satire? Do these same people believe that Dreamboat Baby blog is really Tom Brady’s fetus too?

Funny thing about the DBR article is how they criticize ESPN for picking on Duke. From my point of view ESPN hypes Duke all the time. Not just “Dookie” Vitale., but the SportsCenter promo showing Bilas getting no love at Carolina’s cafeteria, or announcing a Duke-Carolina game as the “Big TV Event” in February, weeks before tip-off. No other college program gets so much publicity. Duke gets a helluva a lot of games nationally televised on ESPN, too. By my count 20 games were broadcast on ESPN and ESPN2 combined, 3 on CBS, 1 on ABC, and 1 (their opener against Columbia) on ESPN-U(navailable). Here’s the link:
    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/teamsched?teamId=150
That’s 25 nationally televised games, out of 33 games played, and the DBR idiot says the media “hates” them. Most schools would give their left-nut to get that kind of “hatred” from the media.

The media is also responsible for hyping Cameron Indoor Stadium, to the point potential recruits aren’t turned off by it. It’s been a 20+ years, since Duke fans were truly “creative” in their cheering / taunting at games. By modern standards, Indoor Stadium, is a small, old, decrepit dump.

Duke fans should fall at the media’s feet, because without the media you’d have no “Cameron Crazies” and without the mystique of the “Cameron Crazies”, getting kids to play in the old stadium would be harder. Most old stadiums are like Indoor Stadium, with students close to the action, and can get very very loud. Schools move to bigger, newer, places because increased ticket sales boost revenues and newer facilities help attract recruits.

DBR should apologize for criticizing the media, which has really really done a lot to promote Duke basketball.

Two comments that made me laugh out loud –

    From east-coast-bias.blogspot.com:

“Today Deadspin linked to an article in the Duke Basketball Report (which confusingly has a section titled “Duke Football”) about Duke hatred.”

    From the nationofislamsportsblog comments:

“Duke athletics is so 1998.” – Dee Dee

I had the misfortune of attending a State Vs. Duke game at Cameron many years ago. I was impressed with the energy of the crazies but the fams around me were a-holes. I mean they would say (and mean) things like “Look at _____ (state player) see how he struts. That really p—- me off.” They were whiney, crude, and mosly non-students — or for that manner people who ever attended Dook. If you ever listen to those who call in on talk shows — you hear the same snobbish attitude.

  17. Buddygreen 04/04/2007 at 10:51 AM #

I don’t hate Duke and I don’t think the duke hatred is no where near as pronounced as the UNC media croonies would like everyone to believe. Coach K was very popular as the Olympic Coach, Coach K is extremely respected for his work with the V Foundation, he has his own nationwide radio show, they fill stadiums everywhere they go much like the Lakers do, and lots of people must like them enough to watch them on TV they hold five of the ten most watched NCAA championship games. I root for Duke out of respect for K when they not playing State of course.

But you always going to get stupid stuff coming out of Duke and UNX, you can’t have that many out of touch flaming liberal weirdos in one area and not have stuff like this.

A warning – don’t hijack this into politics. Thanks.

Damn, DBR, cry like the little bitches you are. Jeez. I mean, after the shellacking that NCSU got in the press last year over the resignation (interpreted as “chased off”) of He Who Ponders the Sound of One Hand Clapping, and the constant abuse that CTC got in the press, one could argue that the media are equal opportunity offenders. Well, almost equal – ol’ “I didn’t know I couldn’t pay players” Roy and his lot of baby blue boys (exactly how is one supposed to find light blue intimidating, anyway?) are subject of few and far between criticisms in the press.

End of the day, the rule in the ACC is “if you’re not wearing blue, you’re gonna get screwed”.

  20. gumbydammit 04/04/2007 at 11:09 AM #

And what’s up \with Roy starting his own cancer research fundraising program (Fastbreak Against Cancer), tight here in the home of th V Foundation? Roy, find another affliction (and some class).

  21. partialqualifier 04/04/2007 at 11:09 AM #

I agree with beowolf and Buddygreen. Coach K was a friend to Jimmy V and NC State when no one else wanted to be. I honestly dont know how anyone that claims to be a State fan can dislike Coach K.

Is he worrisome at times? Yes. Does his team get evry call? Yes. Do his player curse like sailors? Yes. But the bottom line is he is a class guy who tries to do things the right way…and unlike Roy he is no hypocrite. You always know where u stand with K. Roy claims to be all angelic..then gets kinda shady when the camera is turned off. I root for Duke in every game except when they play us.

  22. MadWolf92 04/04/2007 at 11:15 AM #

I like Duke basketball. I like Duke, the graduate and professional school. I loathe Duke undergraduates.

  23. lush 04/04/2007 at 11:26 AM #

i thought the funniest part was the nation of islam wondering what it was like to be discriminated against for no reason. talk about arragant ignorance, it made the dookies look like white supremacist’s to whine about what they are supposedly “going through” to a website named nation of islam.

    what a bunch of idiots.

  24. redfred2 04/04/2007 at 11:30 AM #

    My rant de jour…

Speaking of Duke, which I don’t particularly care for, for many reasons. Arrogance, style of play, and coaching tactics being a few of those reasons. Yep, I’ll be the first to admit that those are pretty much the same reasons I grew up hating Carolina and Dean Smith specifically for. The difference is that I figured all of that out on my own, the media was carolina blue back then too, I didn’t need them continually bashing unc to know I didn’t like the powder blue. The media was doing the same, hurling criticisms and innuendo at anyone else in unc’s path back then, but most fans of other programs weren’t swallowing it like they do nowadays. I really do not understand why they readily fall victim to it now.

All I can say is this MEDIA is exactly the same MEDIA that we all know oh so well already. The same one that found all the resources it needed and found as much air time and page space possible to cover NC State’s demise back years ago.

Every negative spin and insult they throw out goes flying off with an intended and very specific target in mind. But the funny thing is that never, and I mean NEVER EVER, do they seem to be directed at one certain target in particular.

If any of you want to jump all over Duke and go right along with the same group of journalism grads, and sports media “experts,” who do anything and everything possible to tear down others to make their darling god-like, then go right ahead jump on board with them. I prefer to judge what is said about Duke, or any other program for that matter, in the same light as what has been said about NC State. We’ve had it easy recently, as a matter of fact we’ve, or the former BB coach anyway, has had their favor, simply because we weren’t a legitmate threat to their darlng program. You can drink their light blue koolaid and jump on their bandwagon against the Dookies, but you just wait, when Sidney Lowe really does what I think he has already pretty well established and is setting up to do, you’ll soon find that there are more than enough of those media types around to spew their unfounded bias and insults in any direction they please, and once again we will be directly in their cross hairs.

Dean, Roy, and K I can’t but respect them all. And any state fan who says they hate Duke more than UNC??? What?!?!?!? there is nothing worse than the pansy blue. Duke has an excuse for being arrogant-they are a private school, UNC? they think they’re a private school and hence their arrogance is much worse. I’m not going to say I don’t hate Duke, back in the days of Grant Hill and Tony Lang I actually pulled for them (EXCEPT of course when they were playing state). But Shane Battier set me off and showed me how carolinaesque duke players have become.

That said Dean Smith, Roy Williams and Coach K are all good men and I will always respect the 3 of them. Its much publicized how Dean keeps in contact with ALL his former players, but did you know he keeps up with many of the recruits who spurned him? No State fan can hate Roy after what he did for Sidney. And any State fan who hates K, I echo the previous comments on this thread-Remember Jimmy V.
