Lowe: ‘I love NC State’

In recent weeks some ‘rumblings’ regarding regarding some NBA teams’ interest in Sidney Lowe have been ruminating in some circles around the NC State Basketball program.

SFN has no information on the topic. Regardless, we thought that the following quote from today’s N&O was worth highlighting.

“I’m happy at N.C. State. I can’t think about that stuff. Certainly some [NBA] people out there may inquire, but I’m not going anywhere. I love N.C. State.”

and we love you too Sid!

We will have greater chance of keeping Lowe if we show him the love also. Fowlup needs to look at giving Lowe a better contract now. Make him happy now. Our ability to keep Lowe happy and at NCSU unfortunaltely rest on the shoulders of LF. That scares me, how about you?

  3. Pack92 03/22/2007 at 7:48 AM #

I think if Sid makes another run next year and this time it’s in the NCAA tourney he gets a CTC contract boost. There would simply be no reason to justify not locking him up long term. They guy had to take a pay cut to come here from the NBA? I don’t know that for sure but his initial contract with us was NOT ground breaking.

In fairness to Fowler, he did give Sid a 6 year deal right out of the gate last year. At the time I felt that was a pretty hefty commitment to a guy that had never coached a college game. Clearly, it was a good move and I suspect that Sid recognizes the fact that we showed a lot of faith in him before he had really proven himself at this level. In many ways, that’s more valuable than coming to him after a good year and trying to lock him up. Maybe I’m whistling through the graveyard but I just can’t see Sid leaving here anytime soon.

I don’t know what Sid was making as an assistant with Detroit, but I would be surprised if the head coaching job here pays less than an NBA assistant. And if our courtship of Barnes and Greaseball showed anything, it is that the $$ is there for the right coach. I don’t think anyone would contend at this point that Sid is not the right coach – even moreso than those guys.

  6. CrankyCookie 03/22/2007 at 7:55 AM #

Actually, I think NBA assistant pay vs college pay is about the same….

  7. choppack1 03/22/2007 at 8:09 AM #

Cranky – I would think that the shoe deal, the other perks and the firing $$ would tip the college coaching gig over the pro asst.

  8. PapaJohn 03/22/2007 at 8:16 AM #

Par Shooter – you got it right, we ‘showed the love’ right out of the gate. A six year contract made a statement to Sid, and a statement to the recruiting world. No need to extend yet. He knows he’s much appreciated and going to be here as long as he wants. The money will be there.

  9. Dan 03/22/2007 at 8:17 AM #

    Let the love fest proceed!

    well said, worm. well said.

usa today had all the coaching salaries recently online. Sid’s guaranteed money wasn’t near the top, but interestingly enough, his performance-based pay and non-guaranteed was at the top.

I think Lowe is financially comfortable, I mean hell, look at his suits. Seriously though, I know the money is very important and this may sound corny, but I think Lowe is here for all the reasons that any parent would want to have influencing their kid. He has more excitement in his corner now than either of the neighboring high and mightys, and if he is treated properly, there is no reason to think that he would jump anymore than either of those two coaches. But no matter how good any employee is, I like the use of big incentives over a hefty boost in base salary. A little carrot waving tends to keep anyone on the “ball” and wanting more.

  12. Par Shooter 03/22/2007 at 8:38 AM #

I think what we’ve typically done in the past is to add a year to the contract to keep its original length and given a boost at that time. So I suspect he’ll get a 1 year extension sometime this summer perhaps to keep the deal at 6 years and a bump in pay, but not a total revamp.

  13. tractor57 03/22/2007 at 8:45 AM #

If money was ever the issue Lowe wouldn’t have agreed to be coach. That being said, he should be shown some appreciation for what he has accomplished in the past season.

  14. choppack1 03/22/2007 at 9:04 AM #

Whoa – This is why I’ve always said you need to get a coach who isn’t just here for the $$. Someone will always have more – the key is to find someone who has another factor playing to their desire to be in Raleigh.

TOB wanted a school that would give him a better chance to compete for a national championship and to play in an atmosphere that embraced college sports.

It’s obvious Sid wanted to return to Raleigh in part for the same reasons I’d like to return there – it’s coming “home” again.

Now, I’d like to see those in charge make the campus feel more like a community again.

“TOB wanted a school that would give him a better chance to compete for a national championship and to play in an atmosphere that embraced college sports. ”

He also wanted to be appreciated monetarily and we are doing that.

  16. Pack92 03/22/2007 at 10:07 AM #

I really do believe Sid is here for the RIGHT reasons as pointed out by redfred and choppack1. He believes we can be a winner in Raleigh of all places! The audacity of the man! Once he does establish that ( and he will) I think he should be right there $ with K and ‘ol Roy. He did come home because he wanted to be here.

If Sidney did a one-and-done back to the NBA, I’d be most dissappointed in him. In fact, I’d really have to question his commitment to anything. BUT Sidney has demonstrated that he means what he says. And he said at the beginning that he would bring NCSU back to basketball glory. I look for him to coach Wolfpack BB for a long time.

As for: “Our ability to keep Lowe happy and at NCSU unfortunaltely rest on the shoulders of LF. That scares me, how about you?”, it scares me big time. When one’s AD is the weakest link in the athletic department, school athletics is in trouble. Just think about all that is going on there IN SPITE OF LF! (And I give him no credit for either Sidney or TOB – they both fell into his lap!) Yet it takes Kay Yow’s illness and the men’s basketball Cinderella run in post-season play to generate any descent publicity! The guy is a moron who is interested only in promoting LF (and fails to understand that doing his job well would do just that!) HE STILL DOESN”T GET IT!

  18. GoldenChain 03/22/2007 at 10:30 AM #

Sid has a good deal for another year. Besides, being an NBA head coach is about the shortest mortality of anything I know of. Why take a big deal that might not even last out a whole season? Besides, that option is always out there for him.

  19. redfred2 03/22/2007 at 11:09 AM #

    Lowe = Yow

I think the man, just like the woman, places the kids, the sport, and the university, above themselves.

  20. class of 74 03/22/2007 at 11:11 AM #

As long as LF doesn’t mess it up, which he is perfectly capable of doing, Sid will be here until he retires with the most wins of any coach in school history.
And somebody that makes and sells red sportscoats is going to make a small mint over the next couple of decades.

“Certainly some [NBA] people out there may inquire, but I’m not going anywhere. I love N.C. State.”

That’s what I’ve been waiting to hear! This isn’t Nick Saban we’re talking about, so I officially feel better now.

“As for: “Our ability to keep Lowe happy and at NCSU unfortunaltely rest on the shoulders of LF.”

From what I understand, which isn’t much, it is up to Mr. Murphy not LF when a raise is owed to the coach.

  23. Texpack 03/22/2007 at 11:27 AM #

I think Sidney has found his spot. The lack of a degree may have been the only thing that kept him out of college coaching before last year. If you had the basketball IQ of a Sidney Lowe and a pure point guard’s mentality, where would you find happiness – teaching college kids with impressionable minds or trying to convince a multi-millionaire who has a posse larger than your bench to make the extra pass?

The love he has for NC State can’t be underestimated. I also have to agree with a post on another thread that Morgan Wooten’s influence on the formation of Sidney as a coach was huge and we know he wasn’t one to jump for more money. Sidney is back at State to accomplish a mission. I think he’ll stick around at least until we are a consistent top 4 finisher in the ACC. Hopefully he’s at State until he retires.

  24. Par Shooter 03/22/2007 at 11:28 AM #

What I find so great about Sidney is that when he says something like that, I have no doubt that he TRULY means it. Further, he didn’t need to say it at all because it is obvious in the way that he goes about his business. I knew he felt that way well before he was ever asked the question. THAT’s what is so great about this situation and why we are all justified in being so pumped up for the future.
