How Many Ways Can You Say Choke?

Kevin Hench has quite a few:

the hated Tar Heels suffered one of the most remarkable collapses in tournament history

squeezing the orange so tight down the stretch that a 10-point lead with seven minutes left

The Tar Heels, the deeper team that was supposed to exhaust the Hoyas with their waves of subs, looked like the team that ran out of gas.

The Carolina trachea implosion began with 9:58 left in the second half and never ended.

Each possession would end abruptly with either a brick on an open shot, a brick on a contested shot or a Ty Lawson turnover in traffic. Talk about tight.

Ellington — Fired up four huge bricks from behind the arc, including the clanger that would have won it. He also managed to fire a SCUD off the back iron on an ugly miss from the right wing early in OT.

Danny Green — He also went 0-for-4 from deep during the collapse.

Ty Lawson — The man that finally ended the nutty stretch with a meaningless 3-pointer with 7.5 seconds left in OT bricked two threes and had costly back-to-back turnovers during the choke.

Tyler Hansbrough…an absurd 12-foot jump hook over Roy Hibbert that barely caught iron with 5:50 left; a 17-footer that was such a brick it almost bounced all the way back to him; a turnaround that missed high off the glass; and a forced shot that Hibbert blocked easily, leading to a Hansbrough travel.

The 1-for-20 epiglottis constriction prompted Jim Nantz to remark, “I have never seen a quality team go this cold so late.”

It turns out you can spell c-r-u-n-c-h time without UNC.

It looks like Mr. Hench is auditioning for Dickie V’s spot as president of the Coach K fan club. I wonder what he had to say about Duke when the #1 seed lost in the round of 16 several times over the last few years?

2002 – Lost to #5 Indiana
2005 – Lost to #5 Michigan St.
2006 – Lost to #4 LSU

Since K’s last national championship in 2001, Duke has been past the Sweet 16 only once (2004). There’s a trend you don’t read much about.

Well I knew that once RWilliams got ‘his kids’ into the system that he would duplicate his success he had at Kansas.lol

“The tar heel chat rooms are full of talk that the players were trying to get the score under the spread”
Now why would they care about that nless they were betting on the games?!lol

“Roy haters who consider him a great recruiter and an awful game coach. The fact that Carolina just lost its seventh straight overtime game would seem to support this view. Kevin Hench FOXSports.com. 3/26/07”

Rick, others: Scroll back up in the comments a bit and you’ll see I posted Williams’ comments regarding Herb Sendek.

When the game ended….I looked at my wife and said exactly this….

“When you hear people talk about Roy Williams being a good coach….but not a great coach….these are the types of games they are talking about. Games when he has a one seed with all the talent and depth in the world and just cant get it done.”

Coaching at Kansas and UNC…which are two of the 4 “Recruit themselves Universities” along with UCLA and Kentucky….he has numerous #1 seeds….many Top 5 recruiting classes…..several 30 win seasons…and ONE National Championship (with Matt Doherty’s team). What an enigma. I often comment to some of my UNC friends who love the guy….”hey I am not knocking his record, but I am really curious to see how this guy would coach at Florida State….or Miami….or Va. Tech.” I mean this guy has coached his entire life at 2 schools where if u just pick up the phone and say…..”hey I am Coach (fill in the blank)…wanna come to Kansas? Wanna come to UNC?”…..the kids are gonna bust down the door to say yes.

This was AT LEAST the third time this year that I thought a coach really put one on Roy. He looks lost sometimes….no timeouts, poor substitutions….I mean UNC wasnt hitting anything from three point land and Wes Miller is picking Pine at of his ass! Makes no sense at all! He had that same look against State in Raleigh….like he had no idea how to stop a run….It’s called a timeout Roy! Damn!

Please excuse the off topic comment here….but being form Wilson, NC I would be remiss if I didnt bring up the Barton Bulldogs winning the DII Nat’l Championship! For any of you who saw it….it was without a doubt the most remarkable finish to a college basketball game that I have ever seen. If you get a chance to watch the last minute….you honestly need to do so…UNREAL!

Yea Rick – I’ve always thought that you could be successful running the offense – especially if you tweak it a little.

The PO requires good ball handling and good passing skills – but guess what – the flex offense requires good passing skills as well. As I stated earlier, the biggest drawback of the PO is that you don’t have guys in the paint when shots go up. But this is a problem because of it’s biggest advantage – it opens up the paint – and gets your opponents big men out of the middle.

Herb’s biggest problem w/ the PO is that he was never aggressive enough w/ it and at times, allowed talented big man to stay away from the low post too much. If you watched the game last night, there were times when this happened w/ Hibbard as well.

One thing is certain – you do need to shoot the 3 well to make a final 4 run. All 4 teams in the final 4 can stroke the 3. Ideally, you’ll also have a strong post game…Georgetown, OSU and Florida all have great players down low.

Not having a healthy Terry killed the Heels. He had been making critical shots for them in games against us and Michigan State. He’s probably their best perimeter shooter (who can create his own shot) – and he’s their go to guy. He didn’t have his legs vs. Georgetown last night. Late in last night’s game, he had an open look at a 3 and missed it…That’s when I really believed that UNC would lose.

+++++Talk about a classless bunch. The tar heel chat rooms are full of talk that the players were trying to get the score under the spread but ended up losing the game. What a bunch of losers. Their own fans saying the tar hole players were shaving points. Idiots to the end!+++++

Calls for an investigation. Wonder if CD will want to fire up the jets?

Reported that Jason Ray, the UNC cheerleader/mascot, passed away this morning.

  8. choppack1 03/26/2007 at 10:12 AM #

primacy – that’s awful. Sorry to hear that.

  9. beowolf 03/26/2007 at 10:16 AM #

Holy crap, primacy, that’s awful news.

Prayers for his family and everyone who knew him. Horrible to hear of someone dying so young.

So reading in to Roys HwSnbn comments — in the past — our use of the PO actually helped UNX prepare for other teams who run that offense. Now that we have discarded it, this year’s rookies could not handle it.

No more NCSU as a sparring partner any more Roy!

And sad to hear about the mascot. Hope everyone takes the high road if commenting on that. Very infortunate.

  11. noah 03/26/2007 at 10:18 AM #

    1) I’m sorry to hear that Jason Ray died. That’s absolutely awful.

    2) I have nothing but respect for Roy Williams. I think he’s a great coach and he seems like a really nice guy…but I’d tell him to his face that I like watching him cry because I hate his f-ing team. And I have no doubt that he’d understand where I’m coming from. As long as he’s at UNC, I hope he goes 0-30 and loses every game by 80 points and they end up on probation and the building falls down and they seed the ground with salt.

I don’t think that’s going to happen. I imagine they’ll be a Final Four threat every year from now on…but I hope they go 0-30.

    3) UNC fans crying about the officiating ought to have their eyes pulled from their skulls with corkscrews because obviously they have no use for them. From the opening possession of the game all the way to the end, the officiating was HORRIBLY HORRIBLY one-sided.

Don’t anyone ever talk about how poor little Ty Hansborough gets treated so bad. Eddy Landreth, I’m talking to you, mister. The first play of the game, TH gets the ball down low and NO ONE comes within a foot of the guy and he’s getting the whistle.

Tips for the ref: When a player has position for a rebound and he goes up for it and suddenly is flying horizontally to the floor and the player behind him has his arms extended, I think you can safely assume there was a push-off.

MSN has an article on their home page:

    “How UNC Blew It”

    Classic!

That news about the mascot is terrible. Wasn’t the kid out jogging? I know from bike riding how dangerous being on the road “naked” can be. Pray for the family. I cannot imagine how utterly devestated they are with something this tragic and unexpected.

  13. noah 03/26/2007 at 10:24 AM #

Ray was walking back from a convenience store along Rt. 4. He had gone to get a burrito and a coke and he got hit from behind by a SUV. That road leads away from the GW Bridge so it’s probably one of the busiest highways in the country.

Ray was 21, an eagle scout, had a 3.6 in Business Management, was set to graduate this may, was active in his church and seems to have been a very generous, friendly and energetic guy.

    Horrible.

Horrible for the Ray family and for the guy in the SUV. I’m sure he’s devestated.

    Rick & Chop:

This is just a guess but I think personnel may better explain the difference between the Georgetown & NC State Princeton offenses. Their perimeter players are a lot more athletic & quicker than what we played with last couple of years; i.e. Green vs. Evtimov. This leads to more drives to the basket with the court spread out. Their 7 footer spent as much time at the 3 point line as our centers did. I think our offense looked more like Georgetown’s the year we had Grundy & Hodge (2002).

  15. Dan 03/26/2007 at 10:35 AM #

In regards to G’Town’s offense, JTIII has some athletes in that offense who can win a race to the basket if the defender tries to overplay them too much. Plus, he varies it enough to keep defenders off balance. Roy had never seen that offense run like that.

I still say that if Ohio State sticks Oden in the middle of a zone, that will force G’Town to go more conventional. And it may force them into too much reliance on the three. G’Town, like every other PO team, still is susceptible to the zone if the three’s arent falling. Still, Jeff Green and Hibbert give them enough power to attack it instead of shooting over it if they stay patient.

I like the PO as a playset. Always have. I hate it when its the only playset. (I also didnt like the players not having freedom in it) Its a great way to attack a overplaying man-to-man defense. Its also a great way to get isolation when your big man can dribble drive. I hate the offense against a zone. Hate isnt even a strong enough word there. But that goes back to Sidney’s philosophy of taking what you want instead of what they give you. The PO has a weakness in that a zone defense, which the Sac Kings have never had to deal with, can force you to take what they are giving you. You have to have a variation for attacking zones that isnt “shoot over it”.

That’s why if I’m Thad Matta I build Oden a tent right in the middle of the lane unless their shooters are going nuts.

    ….

Are Chapel Hill freaks really talking about point shaving?

^That is terrible news about that kid. I know he was struck by a car, but why, what actually happened?

  17. Redblogger 03/26/2007 at 10:55 AM #

How about a link to the UNC blogs and point shaving.

  18. newt 03/26/2007 at 10:55 AM #

Can’t really think about anything but Jason Ray’s family. That’s horrible to lose someone so young and suddenly.

  19. choppack1 03/26/2007 at 10:56 AM #

“G’Town, like every other PO team, still is susceptible to the zone if the three’s arent falling. ”

True – but I’d say that any team, regardless of offensive style – is susceptible to zones if their outside shot isn’t falling. Now, where the PO is more susceptible is that you’re built to have one man tops in the middle – so you really can’t break it down that well. However, if your shots are falling, you can break that zone fast. I don’t think most teams are good enough at the zone to keep a good shooting team from breaking it down w/ a couple passes around the horn.

A story posted 12 minutes ago lists Ray as still on life support:

  21. Dan 03/26/2007 at 11:04 AM #

You can attack a zone other ways than just shooting over it. For years and years, everyone knew to overload a zone. To attack it and confuse it. That’s still the best method for getting high percentage shots against a zone.

The idea that the three is the only way to attack it if so pacifist. And it immediately lets the defense tell you what shot you are going to take. And about 60% of the time, the three ball wont be there. Its a good gamble for the defense. When you have an offense that allows a defense to tell you what shot you are shooting, you are in trouble.

  22. choppack1 03/26/2007 at 11:26 AM #

Dan – YOu’re right, about overloading it. But most teams don’t play zone well enough right now for it NOT to be susceptible to the 3. If it’s a good gamble for the defense, you’d see more teams playing it long term.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s worth a shot. But, OTOH, if your opponent is hitting 3s – and if they’ve got half decent shooters, they should – you can break the zone in a hurry. Remember, one of the Pack’s big wins in 2001-2002 season was against Syracuse – and they play the best zone in the country.

Like I said, I don’t dispute that the zone is good way to stop it – I just don’t think most teams play it well enough. I do think OSU deployed a zone for their game against Memphis – and it worked well, but Memphis didn’t run the PO either. Georgetown used the zone in key possessions last night against the Heels – the Heels don’t run anything resembling the PO.

Oregon’s theory was to try and make Florida’s guards beat them from the outside – it didn’t work last night.

The 3 point shot has changed the risk factor of the zone. It definitely can work, but if it doesn’t your opponent can catch up in a hurry.

That is very sad about Jason. From the reports I’ve seen he was a great person and I was appalled that Roy or the players didn’t mention Jason at the presser. At least not in the part I heard.

I would of expected Roy’s first comment (which in fairness I may of missed) wasn’t something like: This game isn’t important with a member of our family in intensive care. If this was said I must of missed it, if it wasn’t brought up the players and coach clearly showed an incredible lack of class and respect to a valuable member of UNC athletics.

I did find the Sendek comment very telling. As most of us expected this is the reason why they had so much support for the guy is that his offense didn’t give them any trouble.

  24. Jeremy Hyatt 03/26/2007 at 11:44 AM #

I thought that the first team to have a real shot at the Heels would be one that would tactically neutralize their style and gameplan of out-running, out-gunning, and out conditioning the opponent. I don’t know what happened in those last 10 minutes, but the Hoyas should be congratulated for out-playing and out-coaching their counterpart in that game. Also, it seemed like UNC didn’t know what to do, they panicked or something. They stopped going inside, and launching jumpers. If Wright is soo good, why didn’t he step up and drive it in? Roy Williams looked like deer in headlights over there like another coach that used to be in the ACC that i will not name. I’m sure experience has a lot to do with it, you can’t teach talent, but you also can’t teach experience, and I think the pack will be an excellent combination of both next year, heading by an excellent coach. Hopefully that will be enough to go head to head with the other triangle schools’ 5 star fresh talent.

  25. legacyman 03/26/2007 at 12:01 PM #

We will have the arms package next year so the playing field…minus the refs…should be fairly level. I am excited if we can locate an adequate PG.
