Correction for the Know it Alls

I saw a ‘typical’ message board thread last week that was discussing on the trivial topic of someone’s opinion about banners in the arena’s rafters. (Like any of us care about some anonymous twelve year old’s opinion in his third post on a message board.)

The topic of banners for ‘ACC Regular Season Championships’ popped-up in the conversation. This was followed by multiple comments from internet know-it-alls who matter-of-factly proclaimed that the ACC does not recognize Regular Season Championships. That is simply not true. The annual Atlantic Coast Conference Champion is determined by the winner of the ACC Tournament. BUT, that does not mean that the Regular Season winner of the ACC is not recognized by the conference.

I try my best to avoid offering opinions and information that may provide any value to these communities anymore; so, I didn’t bother sharing the truth and correcting the inaccurate statements. Today, the Charlotte Observer picked up the cause and shared the following:

“There is a popular misconception that the tournament winner is the only champion recognized by the ACC. That’s not true. The ACC’s official record book lists regular-season champs for every season, beginning in 1954.”

ok… so GoPack has the game today on ABC… ESPN has the game on ESPNFullCourt.

I know you can NEVER trust fully in GoPack, but PLEASE tell me that THEY are right?!?!?!

I sit in the upper level, mid-court area of the RBC center, and have been looking at a couple of our regular season championship banners for about six years now. Anyone who says that the ACC or NC State doesn’t recognize them just isn’t paying any attention.

It is a fine line distinction – the ACCT winner is the official ACC champion. But that doesn’t mean that regular season titles have zero official recognition.

Does anyone get why ABC isn’t showing their games in HD (unlike CBS)? Cheap bastards.

Our game will be on ABC regionally in the ACC area, but on Full Court in other parts of the country getting a different game on ABC at that time.

The NIT winner is a national champion also. Let’s do a little comparison game:

Busch Series vs. Nextel Cup Series
    NIT vs. NCAA
    JV vs. Varsity
    Minor league vs. Major league
Gator Bowl champion vs. BCS champion
    Miss Congeniality vs Miss USA
    Regular season vs. ACC Tourney

I’ll take an ACC tourney championship all day long and twice on Sunday. The regualar season “champion” really means nothing outside of recognition.

The trophy presented to the tournament winner doesn’t have the word tournament on it anywhere. First place Carmichael Cup points for mens basketball are awarded to the tournament winner. Listing the best record of the regular season is not the same as “recognizing the regular season champion.” When you cite the Charlotte Observer as your authoritative source you are headed down a dangerous path.

Automatic bid goes to tourney winner and therefore, IMHO, that is the only champion. Recognize the regular season winner all you want…hang a banner, sing a song, whatever.

Still won’t make it a conference championship.

I’d disagree with your statement Waxhaw that the regular season championship means nothing. Just ask the NCAA selection committee.
