Let the coaching circus begin…

    Bo

That’s another reason that I think, and I hate to say it, but Roy Williams is a smart man.

Occasionally we try to compare coaching records based on NCAAT games played, won, etc. Here is some interesting information about the NCAAT,

    Year Teams invited to NCAAT
    1970-74 25
    1975-78 32
    1979 40
    1980-82 48
    1983 52
    1984 53
    1985-2000 64
    2001 to ? 65

Interesting persepctive when you think NCS had to be one of the elite 24 teams in the nation to have aa chance to play for its first National Championship. And thanks for the extra space and an ACCT championship in 83 when the NCAAT was 20% smaller than it has been since 1985.

I heard Adam Gold say once that John Wooden wasn’t a better coach than Dean Smith because it was easier to win national titles when the field was smaller.

Which is an odd thing to say…because Dean was coaching then and didn’t win any national titles.

^But Wooden’s players were getting paid…nothing like that would ever happen at UNC.

    From the Forde column:

“Over the next couple of days you’ll probably read and hear some sweeping generalizations about the unreasonable Big Blue fans. About how they ran off a guy with a great record. About their rough treatment of a class act.

…I’m here to tell you that would be unfair and inaccurate.

…Ten years in one place is a pretty long run.

…Smith’s record in recent years, while good, has not been great.”

Un[]ingbelievable. And you wonder why we think there’s a media conspiracy against us. The irony here is sickening.

There were some other things that might factor in. The ACC had a higher SAT requirement than UCLA. They lost Henry Bibby (Sr) to UCLA because he could not get into an ACC school. I’m not demeaning what Wooden did because if he wasn’t a better coach — he was a better manager, recruiter and prepared for big games better than Dean. UCLA accomplished something that we will not likely see again.

And I always loved the line “Unlike Linda Lovelace, Dean Smith always choked on the big one.”

Noah, the twist on that arguement I have often heard is that UCLA has an unbeleivable easy path to the Final 4 each year. The Pac 8 (at that time) ws a joke, basketball on the west in general was joke, as oppossed to the ACC which annually had 2-3 teams in the top 10 – with only ONE making the NCAAT.

However, the arguement breaks down once you get to the Final 4, because UCLA had not problem winning those games, including beating UNC and Duke for national titles.

^ Also, back then, the NCAAT did not seed teams to make each regional, on paper, equal.

Not only was the PAC 8 a pretty easy conference, they had no post season tourney. UCLA probably won the conference by mid-Feb. most years.

When it mattered, UCLA/Wooden beat everyone they were matched up against so it really doesn’t matter how they arrived at the championship game. That stuff is still discussed even with seedings every year anyway.

I would call Grant Wahl a douche bag, but that would be unfairly disparaging of douche bags…
