After four years, we all love and respect Engin Atsur very much. In this entry on the N&O’s Blog, he leaves us with quite a special statement.

It has been great. I’m proud of my university and my team, all my teammates and coaches. I had a great career. I enjoyed it very much. It has been an honor to play for the Wolfpack and N.C. State.

Thanks for the fearless leadership, inspired play, hard work and superior character with which you always represented NC State, Engin. Good luck in all of your future endeavors.

It is definitely worth elevating a one of the comments from our comments section to add a little more to this:

This is a wonderful quote from Engin and a microcosm of his career at NC State. Engin was the model student athelete, and really gave his other teammates something to look up to. He wasn’t the fastest, he wasn’t the most atheletic, but his demeanor made him one of the best leaders/difference makers I’ve ever seen. Engin, I personally wish that you had been able to win a championship on your way out, but thank you so much for all you’ve given to our program. I don’t remember being so sad to see a college career come to an end. Good luck, and I know NC State will always be here for you.

    Engin Atsur is proof that college basketball is still a game that is played from the neck up in large measure. He is a class guy and has been a great representative of NC State. He’ll probably make an excellent coach one day if he wants to do that. Good luck and thanks Engin.

    The following is an excerpt from an article in the N&O:

    “There was a lot of adversity, but we found a way to make it a good season,” Atsur said. “We finished strong. There’s a bright future for the Wolfpack.”

    Grant said Lowe had a short message for his team after the game.

    “He said there are three teams in the Triangle now, that’s it’s no longer just Duke and Carolina,” Grant said. “He said this [team] put N.C. State back on the map.”

    Man, I would have loved to have Atsur w/ better legs under him this year. He was the epitome of the warrior – he would dive for loose balls and take big shots. You could tell this year he really got tired of all the hand-checking when the refs allowed the opposing guards to manhandle him.

    Atsur will be one of my favorites – he’s been a great representative of our university for 4 years. I also think he appreciates the freedom and responsibility Lowe gave him. He wasn’t an inter-changible part or even a key part in the cog – he was the Engine, he was the on-court leader.

    Thank you for 4 excellent years of service and leadership.

    I was thinking towards the end of last night’s game how far Atsur has come (in my opinion): I remember him taking quite a few last minute shots as a freshman/soph that I thought were horrible. Last night, though, I was wishing he was the one taking the last minute shots.

    I wish he had stayed away from international competition last summer. I cannot help but to believe it was a major contributing factor to his injury.

    It could have been a different year with him.

    I have noticed though, his was the only major injury this year. That is a drop for us. I would guess that Lowe’s experience in the pros with keeping players that play so much healthy has to pay dividends for us.

    Astur came in here as a mature freshman and has been the steadying force throughout his 4 years. He is really the only reason our inexperience didn’t just overwhelm us all season long. I’m hoping not, but I think early next season will be when his loss really becomes obvious.

    Yeah SS, it would be more than great to always have a player like Atsur. One of my WOLFPACK favorites, I hope he does well.

    kpritch – those shots were probably a result of him taking shots w/ a shot clock winding down and us having to force up something.

    I can’t remember exactly which point guard we were pursuing when we got Atsür, maybe Shakur – but I am glad the way it worked out.

    Now I’m sad all over again. He was one hell of a player, and one hell of a human being. I hope he at least comes back for a game or two next year. I wish we could have won the ACCT or the NIT for him. He deserved to have a title of some kind during his college career.

    Rick, a very excellent observation on the lack of injuries this year. As I stated in the “Top 10 Non-Excuses” post years ago, one injury-plagued year is unfortunate, but being injury-plagued each and every year, multiple players, is systemic and owing to the coach.

    I liked this:

    What? Back on the map? What’s he talking about? We’ve had 5 consecutive…

    Just wanted to beat “grove” and “blockhead” to the punch this time.

    That is first comment I’ve heard from Lowe that slightly touches on the past reality of the BB program.

    I remember when he committed, I heard that a turkish player was coming, but no one knew his name. We called him Keyser Soze for about ayear.

    Atsur is going to go down as one of the most underrated Wolfpack players of all time. He was truly awesome
