Another Year, Another Job, Another New Contract

Sound Familiar?

John Calipari, who guided Memphis to the NCAA regional final for the second season in a row, received a contract extension through 2012 on Monday.

Calipari’s name was tossed out as a candidate for job openings like Kentucky even before Memphis lost 92-76 to top-seeded Ohio State in the South Regional on Saturday.

Calipari – 3
Memphis AD – 0

No doubt that Calipari won the war of “who taught whom a lesson” last year. It didn’t take until mid-April to get this contract updated.

Calipari is 181-63 in seven seasons at Memphis. He said university officials have shown they remain committed to top facilities and academics.

“I have repeatedly stated that as long as that commitment remains strong, I will be the head coach at the University of Memphis,” Calipari said in a statement.

Um, what commitment to academics is he talking about? Is that the one where they’re committed to not requiring anyone to actually graduate?

It took almost equal money from Memphis to get him to turn us down. If Kentucky is stupid enough to offer Cal huge money I bet Memphis lets him go.

I still say I would be floored if Kentucky went that route. I’m almost sure they think they are way to good for Cal.

I am glad we did not get this guy.
We would be going through the “will he leave” every time a job opened up.

I wonder how long before the AD gets sick of it.

Well the Calipari trick is working for me here at work also. I got 7 of 8 teams into the Elite 8 on our office pool. I let it be known that other office pools wanted me next year, and I just waited. Now I have an extra 10k and another week of vacation!

    Thanks Mr. Calipari

I will admit that the Sirens Lure of John Calipari had me last Spring. One of these days I will learn to accept that sometimes bad things happen to pave the way for good things. Personally, after watching the NCAA tourney game the other night with Memphis…I am very thankfull that he turned us down.

I am not sure of the name of the player, but one of Memphis’ players fouled out with 5 minutes left in the game…and it was one of their forwards. After fouling out the player walked right to the bench…taking off his Jersey right in front of Calipari…tossing it aside….and plopping down on the bench. He spent the last 5 minutes of the game cheering on his team in a GD wife-beater and gym shorts! Assistant coaches walked by….Calipari walked by….nothing! During a timeout…said player ran onto the floor….in wife-beater mind you…to celebrate with the players. I would have been incensed if Lowe allowed a player to throw his Jersey to the side and show that much disrespect for the university.

Calipari has made his deal with the devil…and sooner or later the devil will come to cash in. If the NCAA closes down Mt. Zion he is screwed big time anyway!

That thuggish looking player was Dorsey. I made a note about that one one of these strings somewhere. I couldn’t believe it either. Just took the jersey right off and sat there looking like a gangsta. No thanks.

“If the NCAA closes down Mt. Zion he is screwed big time anyway!”

    You mean Laurinburg Prep.

Mt. Zion is a bastion of truth and higher learning that produces wonderful power forwards.

Although the names of the high schools the Memphis commits come from is pretty interesting.

Derrick Rose (amazing PG) – Simeon Vocational HS
Marcus Morris – The Preparatory Charter School

The have another guy from a respected school to be fair, but those two are pretty funny.

You have to wonder what the short and long-term effect of Tubby’s departure will have on Kentucky. Did he have good recruits coming in and will they stay? How much time will they give the next coach? Tubby got a lot of patience after his NCAA championship, Pitino’s players or not. Will the next coach get the same patience?

There are some parallels to the State/Sendek situation. It all turned out for the best here – a combination of Sidney and good luck with injuries. If we had lost one more of the starting 5-6 it would have been a potential disaster…

Which brings to mind a question: How did Werner and Davis do at their transfer schools? Did they get Horner minutes or freshman minutes?

“Goliath” Dorsey is a real piece of work. He dominates ConferenceUSA teams all season than acts like he accomplished something. He decides to talk smack about Oden leading up to the OSU game only to get shutdown by “David”.

I love how he picked himself to be Goliath…aka the loser.

Cal has that team completely under control…lol! It is good to give bulletin material vs one of the most gifted players in the country.

Boiled okra is the only thing slimier than Calipari.

no need to disrespect boiled okra.
