ACCNow: ‘You tell me which had more passion?’

Our NC State vs Marist post-game entry is a fantastic one that is full of great current and historical comments. Click here to check it out.

At the bottom of the entry we took the time to update some links to major media outlets that recapped the evening’s events. One of the links was to an entry at ACCNow that deserved to be bronzed, let alone elevated to its own entry here at SFN.

It is a thing of beauty, and I’d like to personally thank the team at the N&O for putting it together.

The NIT’s not supposed to matter, the Not Important Tournament. Try telling that to N.C. State — its fans or its coach.

The Wolfpack returned one more time to Reynolds Coliseum on Friday night for a second-round game with Marist. The Old Barn was jammed. It was loud and State won. Just like when Sidney Lowe played at State.

When you listen to Lowe, who was coaching in the NBA when N.C. State moved from the on-campus facility to the State Fairgrounds in 1999, you can hear the preference in his voice for where his team should call home.

“There’s a difference when you have your place,” Lowe said without mentioning where N.C. State played all but one of its home games this season.

“It’s Reynolds,” Lowe said. “It’s all where it happened for me. Anyone that’s played in the ACC and played in this building against N.C. State, they’ll tell you it’s one of the toughest places to play in the country. It’s crazy in here.”

Crazy, and this for an NIT game. A tournament, on Friday and in this corner of the world, that mattered almost as much as the other one. It did for an N.C. State fan base that somehow had been accused of running the previous coach out of town. Eight thousand fans show up for an NIT game at 9:30. You tell me which had more passion — the previous coach or these fans?

There’s no doubt those fans are in the first full-fledged stages of love with Lowe, who has rallied a team that went 5-11 in the ACC to the championship game of the ACC Tournament and a 20-win season, thanks to two more in the NIT.

And to whom did Lowe, who, you know, did the actual coaching, give the credit to?

“The atmosphere showed tonight, without our crowd, this would have been a tough one,” Lowe said. “It was a tough game as it was but I think our crowd kept us in it.”

    The jury’s not out because:
    1. Players and fans have pride again.
    2. Sidney has done an outstanding job in the face of adversity.
    3. The team plays with passion.
    4. Wolfpack basketball is fun to watch again – even when we lose.

I agree with VA81, this time things just plain feel different and being an ’80 grad I’ve felt a lot of things and had more than a few disappointments. Dang even TO’B is getting Sheridan involved.
What I like is that this feeling is from the heart up, not the mouth down!

Oh, and Herb had two huge wins late in the season against USC and Cal, I think that his league loses we almost all by 10 or less (well we all know that his offense doesn’t lend itself to blowouts.
He has been moderately successful on the recruiting trail and his fans seem happy with him, something he didn’t enjoy with us since his 5th season.
I expect Herb will have the same moderate success and will do fine, althought I’m not looking for him to dominate the PAC 10 while he’s there.

I actually feel sorry for any of our fans who think the jury is still out on Sidney. If you can’t see the difference between him and our last coach then you are to be pitied. Yes, they had similar first seasons but lordy, even a blind hog finds an acorn once in awhile.

I have known in my heart for 5 years that Sidney should be our coach and that he would be a great college coach. I had a chance to chat with him several years ago and it was apparent that he had the personality to be a great recruiter. I already knew he was a great player and had learned his basketball under some great coaches. He is a “can’t miss college coach” and we are unbelievably fortunate to have him. He will NOT be a flash in the pan. IMHO he will buiild a fantastic program and will compete equally with the best in the country including Duke and UNC. There will soon be another bully in the ACC.

And he’s got an all-America from Duke transferring in. We remember how we felt when he took Les’ guys and added discipline. They suddenly played great defense and kept games close. Then they won a few. We were in it for Schea Cotten, Damon Thornton and Justin Gainey had had breakout freshmen seasons, and things just looked like we were going to be great. Little did we know that “breakout freshmen years” would be players’ high-water marks, and great disappointments in recruiting classes would be par for the course, and not crazy, unfortunate circumstances.

forst8, I have to admit I never thought Lowe would be our coach. I thought Whittenburg was an obvious candidate, but I wanted Rick Barnes first and foremost — for his passion, for his record of succeeding at football schools, and for his lack of fear of Dean Smith and the baby blue. Turns out that with Lowe, we’ve got more passion, the same lack of fear, and we’ll just see about the record of success.

Herb Sendek is a decent coach, and he will do well at ASU—that has never been in question in my mind. The problem is that just being decent and/or just doing well has never been a part of NC State’s tradition nor should it ever be NC State’s goal.

No one can predict the future, so who knows what the Lowe era holds. With a little luck, Sid can build on what is a very positive vibe right now.

We can predict the past, however, and it should be evident to anyone with any sense that it was clearly time for a change from the Sendek way. If the numerous ACC examples aren’t enough to convince you, then surely watching Tim Floyd and Lon Kruger roll to the Sweet 16 in much less than year 6 by beating programs, Wisconsion and Texas, that we couldn’t hope to beat in years 8 and 10 should stick the dagger in the point once and for all…

We wasted too much time waiting for too little!!

I admit that I didn’t see Sidney Lowe as an option but Rick Barnes didn’t really float my boat either. I wanted NCSU to get Barnes simply because that was who Fowler had seemingly set his sights on. I thought if an alum would be considered it would be Whit. But like I’ve said before, the moment Lowe was announced I was estatic and calm all at the same time. As far as I was concerned Lowe had everything we needed, if it took a little while to adjust to coaching in the collegiate ranks, so be it. I knew what he had to offer would be more important then just simply winning basketball. The player’s, the university, and all of us fans are now FEELING exactly what I had anticipated on that very first day.

“Do you think a stake out, or that both Cedar and Joe need to be tailed?”

um, I had more faith in Sid than a lot of “fans” here that didn’t even think they’d get to the NIT & would be in the ACC celar.

  10. redfred2 03/19/2007 at 8:57 AM #

    C’mon now Cedar,

That was just a little good natured ribbing there.

    Why another Herb-bashing thread?

  12. lush 03/19/2007 at 9:45 AM #

    ^^
“the thing is, it’s not really Herb I want to bash, it’s all the naysayers and jackasses who lambasted us last spring. And unfortunately the only way to make the case that they were the wackos, not us, is to point out how much better off we are now that we have Sid and Herb is long gone.”

“um, I had more faith in Sid than a lot of “fans” here that didn’t even think they’d get to the NIT & would be in the ACC celar.”

Um, unfortunately, all that “faith” of yours got lost in the fact that you have never posted anything positive about the Lowe program except in defending Herb as if you wanted to build up the expectations on Lowe so that his failure might help you defend your faith and love for the greatness that was Herb. Your “faith” in Lowe accounts for about 1% of your posts.

The other 99% of your posts are spent directly defending Herb (your posts on this thread being prime examples).

You could probably save us all a lot of pain if you would just go ahead and join Herb’s staff out at ASU and help him find “the next Nowitski” and win some titles or something…

  14. redfred2 03/19/2007 at 7:10 PM #

    “Why another Herb-bashing thread?”

They’re all that way Cedar. Why, you yourself, have totally convinced ME of that already. These people are all crazy, crazy I tell you!

  15. gumbydammit 03/19/2007 at 11:00 PM #

So what part of (a) Herb sucks and (b) sports journalists suck even more is not understood here? Next…

  16. CedarGroveWolf 03/20/2007 at 5:19 PM #

“as if you wanted to build up the expectations on Lowe so that his failure might help you defend your faith and love for the greatness that was Herb”

mmmmm, not. Just tired of the bashing/lies.
