4-2 vs The Big Four; Red Jacket goes 2-0-1 [UPDATED 11:20pm]

“Our fans are comparing ourselves to Duke and North Carolina…I understand that our fans want to be able to compete with them; we all do. But you can be real good on a daily basis and not be better than those two programs.”

Lee Fowler
NC State Athletics Director
March, 2005

* Thanks to the N&O for the following:

It took Sidney Lowe one season to do what Herb Sendek did only once in 10 seasons — beat Duke and Carolina in the same season.

State beat Duke 85-80 in overtime and UNC on Feb. 3. Lowe’s 2-2 against Duke and UNC. Sendek went 3-21 vs. Duke and 5-17 vs. UNC. The only time Sendek beat both in the same season was 2002-03.

It’s the first time State beat a ranked UNC and a ranked Duke team in the same season since 1990-91.

* Couldn’t help but remember the following in light of the opponent tonight:

But let’s assume for a moment that Sendek does leave N.C. State. The question then becomes, can State do better?

Would State be able to attract a prominent big name coach or would the school have to roll the dice on somebody young and unproven, maybe a Valvano discipline such as Derek Whittenburg?…

…I can’t help thinking about how Clemson football fans ran Ken Hatfield off in the early 1990s—largely because he was a bad personality fit at the redneck school. He didn’t drive a pickup truck or spit tobacco like Danny Ford. All he did was win football games. So they ran him off as Wolfpack fans are trying to run Sendek off and hired Tommy West instead. They loved him—he was a Danny Ford clone in every way except he turned the program into a mediocrity (he even lost to Duke!).

N.C. State had better be careful. They may run off Sendek and find themselves stuck with Tommy West.

* In a year where NC State played the toughest schedule in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Wolfpack is guaranteed a non-losing season in Coach Sidney Lowe’s first season at the helm of a depleted NC State program.

* NC State has delivered two of Duke’s last three losses in the ACC Tournament. Tonight, in the first overtime Tourney game in three years, Sidney Lowe became the second NC State coach in a row to defeat a higher-seeded Duke team in his first ACC Tournament.

* Duke had knocked NC State out of four of the last six ACC tournaments – including two wins in the ACC finals.

* Wolfpackers EVERYWHERE need to set a precedent on Friday and fly your flags on your homes and on your cars!!!

* NC State played with one McDonald’s All-American tonight. Duke played with six McDonald’s All-Americans.

* Coach Sidney Lowe improves to a 4-2 record vs the Big Four and currently does not have a losing record against a single Big Four school. Additionally, Coach Lowe is 8-2 vs teams in the state of North Carolina.

* The national media and the HSSS can re-visit your crow by clicking here.

* Do NOT underestimate the importance of the following – Duke did not out rebound State tonight AND the Blue Devils had three more turnovers than State (with Engin Atsur playing).

* The N&O’s ACCNow blog has the following picture linked on the site. It is especially interesting to those of us NC State fans who clamored for a change in our basketball program for six friggin years in light of the fact that if Lee Fowler would have had his way, Sidney Lowe would have never been coaching at NC State. Sometimes you have to wonder about the gall & nerve of some people

* The N&O says that Costner & the Wolfpack stun Duke.

NC State, with forward Brandon Costner and senior point guard Engin Atsur refusing to wilt, roared back from several deficits to score the second big upset of the ACC men’s basketball tournament tonight, ousting Duke 85-80.

At the end of a back-and-forth second half, Atsur gave the Pack the lead at 70-68 with his third three-pointer of the second half, with 1:30 left, but Nelson tied the score for the 11th time with a layup with 41 seconds to go. State had five shots down the stretch, but Courtney Fells’ three-pointer and Atsur’s tip follow did not find the mark as regulation time expired.

Costner converted a three-point play with 4:22 left in overtime, and State maintained the lead the rest of the way. Gavin Grant’s free throw with 25 seconds left gave the Pack a four-point lead at 83-79, and Costner put it away with two free tosses to make it 85-80 with 11 seconds to go.

Costner led State with a career-high 30 points, and senior guard Engin Atsur added 21. Ben McCauley had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

* Departing shot focused on ACC pride – if Boston College wins on Friday, the ACC will have NINE teams with 20 or more wins.

Can you believe that mess? And just when I thought Sid already had more ACCT wins than Prosser, ol’ Skip might tie him.

It was nice to see us get some calls on the holding and grabbing on the drives. Brandon Costner was incredible tonight as was Atsur’s second half. Sidney Freakin’ Lowe, I am so proud of my classmate. The Red Jacket rolls on.

This win was probably the most important of Lowe’s short career. Now he can not only say he can beat Duke and UNC but he can do it on a neutral court so the naysayers that say “well, they WERE playing in the RBC Center” can’t use that excuse. It is amusing to me that even the N&O is starting to buy into Lowe’s coaching. Maybe Coach K and Williams have gotten stale but when was that last time you saw an article in the sports section predicting State to pull an upset win over Duke or UNC? And actually sounding like they were hoping it would happen? I can’t ever remember it happening. No matter what happens from here on out this has been a good year in a lot of ways for NC State’s basketball program.

Wow, I can hardly wait to see the Pack in HD tomorrow – FINALLY! I must say, Raycom’s HD looks pretty good.

What a great tournament this is. Too bad nobody’s in the damned arena to see it.

My “game outfit” is put away in its entirety, and will be ready for continued good mojo tomorrow night.

I couldn’t believe the endless McBob highlight/blatant charge clip. It’s not like that was a key play or anything – we were still up two possessions!

Amazing thought – we beat a ranked opponent with both Fells and Grant doing essesntially nothing. Wow.

Go, Tech! Want to avoid NIT bid competition.

I can’t believe fowler sported the red jacket after everything he has said and
    done to bash the fans.

That game was awesome. Glad to see us pull out the win.
I too had a game out fit that I sported for this game that I had on for the UNC win. Let’s hope tomorrow is as lucky!!

    Go PACK

McCauley made McBob look like a complete fool!!
Dribble, spin, drop, turn, fake, lay-up!
Does anybody else notice the neanderthal look he gets?

Who said expansion was bad for ACC hoops? This is one hell of a day of basketball.

    Four great games today….

  14. burnbarn 03/09/2007 at 12:25 AM #

A lot of interesting stuff in this game.

    1) The PSA with TOB in it filmed at the carter..very nice piece and i wonder if they will be doing that with others schools? (hope not)

    2) I love our O. It is the classic pro offense. Sid had said this week that we needed three people to score to be effective. We got that from BC,BM and EA and we ran the triangle as well as i have seen a college team. This is why CF and GG were less conspicuos in the box score.
Throw in the pick and roll for the two man game and this is a fun offense.

    3) Dook played as well offensively (particularly with jumpers) as the have all season. You could tell their players had that look that they were not sure they could win. No one on the court had the determined look worn by Wojo on the bench.

    4) We will need to be a better defensive team in the future and it was nice to see an inspired rebounding performance.

    5) I am excited about UVa. We also owe them a game and it would be sweet to get it.

    6) Looks like Engin is nearing 100%.. it has been a long time since he has moved this well.

    7) I want to temper my enthusiasm however as we know that dook personnel match up well for us.

    8) We have a coach

While Fells offense wasn’t there, he played most of the second half with 4 fouls and shut down Scryer.

You can’t stop Harvey Hale, you can only hope to contain him…

  17. Mr O 03/09/2007 at 12:39 AM #

What happend to HD? Did somebody flip the switch?

  18. BJD95 03/09/2007 at 12:42 AM #

It locked up, and looks like they flipped to SD. They had better fix that shit by tomorrow. I have waited all year to see us play in HD (in a non-bar context), damn it!

  19. Mr O 03/09/2007 at 12:44 AM #

Has there ever been a better day of ACC basketball in the tournament?

I went to Amedeos who has a very nice HD setup now. Amazingly, there was hardly anyone there.

This is flat-out insane. Tomorrow is bound to be a letdown.

    Was that Harvey Hale again?
