Fortune magazine announced on its website Tuesday its first set of MBA rankings in “Fifty Best B-schools for Getting Hired 2007.”

NC State’s (relatively new) MBA was ranked a whopping #25 in the country, tied with Babson, Notre Dame, Boston College, UC-Irvine and Indiana.

The top five were Wharton, Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and Kellogg.

Of local interest, Duke was #8 and Wake Forest was #49.

UNC-Chapel Hill was not listed.

WOW!! Congratulations to Dean Ira Weiss and all of the amazing things that are going on at the College of Management.

    This really is impressive. It will be interesting to see if there is a large spike in applications and the quality of the applicants?

    This simultaneously makes me smile and weep. I’m glad that we have a well regarded program, but at the same time I’ve heard horror stories about the quality of students that populate the COM. I have a friend who has TA’d for the COM and I have been regaled with stories on a daily basis about students complete lack of understanding for the fundamental principles of mathematics and problem solving. Fundamental as in, don’t understand units, fundamental.

    Now I hear that these are product of a top rated school. These people will be my managers. Sometimes life is cruel.

    ^A large percentage of MBA students have undergraduate degrees in engineering or science, not business. This percentage is even higher for State’s technology-focused program. The students you referenced don’t make it to any decent MBA program – where a calculus requirement is a given.

    I didn’t interact much with undergrads while I was at grad school at State, but my peers in the COM were certainly smart!

    Many of the ‘deficiencies’ of which you speak are not captive just NC State’s COM (undergrad or grad).

    Sheep lovers everywhere are swearing they have public apology from Fortune in which they admit their mistake. They are claiming that Fortune mixed up the results between us and UNC.

    Personally, I think its sour grapes. The only problem is that they are always ranked.

    Okay College of Management. Your new assignment is to evaluate Mr. Fowler’s office and those of some sister schools. Gather the data, do the research and present the findings to Donald Trump on The Apprentice.

    Then we will hear what words the Donald has to say. Two possibilities: “Great job” or “You’re fired”

    Hey guys, it doesn’t stop there. Forbes also has NC State listed as one of the 25 “most connected” universities in the country, as far as technology goes. I think that’s something else to take pride in: http://www.forbes.com/connected/

    I have my MBA from State and while I am glad to see this, my experience is far different. IMO their placement service is horrid.

    I think it’s especially nice to see State ranked above Madison. As public institutions go UW is the standard in a lot of areas, so to get ahead of them means they’re doing something right at State.

    I’m in the College of Management and let me tell you… we have the craziest mix of kids in there.

    It’s mostly rich frat kids and transfers from other majors and colleges. Personally, I’m glad I’m in the accounting program. They don’t any shit there 😀 (#20 in the nation ftw)

    I’m at NYU’s MBA program right now. I was happy to see the list because we popped up to 10th, but was ASTOUNDED to see State on the list at 25. WOW!!! It’s not the overall ranking…yet…but it’s a good sign.

    That wouldn’t surprise me…I work w/ college educated professionals – the kind who would go to get an MBA and many of them just don’t understand the most basic principles of what is important in a traditional business sense. Many can be led to water and the light will come on, others just stumble around in the darkness. Of course, the workplace has had fundamental changes in the last 20 years.

    I am another proud graduate of the COM (’97). Glad to see the rankings. As someone stated above there is a mix of students esp. transfers from other majors. Many of course from engineering. To be a good engineer I believe you have to be able to think analytically and those that can’t get out.
    But I think the better COM students are very good analytical thinkers also and those that aren’t have problems with some basic fundamentals and that is a problem in the workplace also. Understanding math well and being able to problem solve is huge in today’s workplace!!
    However, we will continue to see a better overall quality student population in the COM over the next few years.
    WAY TO GO COLLEGE OF MGMT!!!!

    Fortune has admitted that it made a mistake. Looks like State might still have gotten a good ranking though.

    The email from Fortune:

    In our Recruiter Survey, we use abridged names of business schools. We have checked the names and we had scores for Kenan-Flagler and separate higher scores for North Carolina (which were attributed to the State school). Though it is possible that there has been some misattribution, we cannot be certain and therefore cannot make any changes to the results (In terms of career placement results, reported to us directly by each school, there is little difference between the two schools, with Kenan-Flagler reporting a slightly higher average salary). However, in our 2007 survey, we will clearly differentiate between Kenan-Flagler (UNC) and North Carolina State. If there has been misattribution, then we will expect to see Kenan-Flagler perform much better in our 2007 survey and we will provide a written apology.

    Any survey that calls us the state school deserves to have screwed up data.

    Also, if UNC-CH is self reporting salary and other information you can guarantee that it is inflated. (see their attendance figures)

    NC State is going to be pulling ahead of UNC-CH over the next 20 years in academic reputation. Technical degrees are in growing demand and centenial campus is a HUGE recruiting tool for top students.

    I have concerns about the validity of a study that failed to differentiate between UNC and NCSU…

    But get know end of pleasure based on the fact UNC was screwed to our benefit.
