HAPPY NEW YEAR!

…more later…

But, to start the New Year we thought that we would ask all of our readers to share at least one, somewhat original and far fetched ‘wish’ for the new year.

Here is one to start us off.

We wish that Engin Atsur would agree not to go back to Europe to play pro ball next year and therefore be redshirted this season so that he could run the point guard on the Wolfpack’s 2007-2008 basketball team.

What have you got?

My wish is that Coach Spaz and Coach Bible to be ushered into the Wolfpack family sometime very soon.

My modest wish is for TOB to outrecruit Davis next year.

We are one win away (6-6 UNC-Greensboro tomorrow night) from finishing the 2006-07 basketball schedule without an “Oh my God” caliber loss. That is a real accomplishment for this team, given the fact that at least one of Ferguson/Atsur missed every single game.

My wish is that we continue to enjoy and appreciate how hard this young teams plays and how much new excitement Coach Lowe offers to the Wolfpack faithful. Also I wish that we remember that if this team runs into trouble later in the season we remember how young they are and how much highly recruited talent Coach will be bringing in to add to this solid base!

Another wish is that Juluis Hodge gets traded before he has to go back to the wild west nightmare that is becoming in Denver, Co.

As long as we’re wishing… How about a win over the Heels this year in the RBC?? It would serve as a wake up call to the baby blue that Sid has arrived and things have changed.

My wish is that we finish a road ACC victory this season with 5 walk-ons on the floor.

I have a somewhat far-flung wish, I have been trying to find a thread to make this fit, and this one is it. This is long so please stay with me.

I would say that no one in the State family has not been touched or known someone affected by cancer. Hell, we in the State family have lost three men’s basketball coaches (Valvano, Sloan, and Casey – correct this if wrong) and have the only women’s basketball coach State has ever had on an indefinite leave fighting cancer (Coach Kay Yow).

So I have a two pronged wish, first on January 28th there is a women’s basketball game in Reynolds Coliseum in which $5 of each ticket will go to the ‘Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’. We as a State family should sell this game out; to me it is a no-brainer. This game supports the fight against Cancer but also would demonstrate our support for Coach Yow and her loyalty to State.

Secondly, to me it is an insult to State and its Alumni, that the ‘Valvano Basketball Classic’ is not played in the RBC Center and that the NC State Athletic Department along with the University is not hosting the event. The University, The Wolfpack Club, The Alumni Association, and the Athletic Department should do what has to be done to bring this tournament to the RBC Center while at the same time turning the tournament into a gala community involvement event for the fight against cancer.

If the University wanted to bring a large amount of very positive press to themselves, they would wrap their hands around this event. They should even think about running a sister event for Coach Yow in Reynolds Coliseum. By finding a few more corporate sponsors (probably not hard to do in the Triangle) they could also add a large dinner the night before the tournament started while providing the coaches and players an event that would make them want to come back and play the next year. If done correctly, with ESPN televising the games, I think you would have to fight top teams off from wanting to come and play in this tournament.

I know there are many haters out there that will speak ill of Valvano; they will talk about many of the bad things surrounding his program, the low graduation rates, and such. This is all true; however, I measure someone with how they left the world. I doubt anyone would say that the speeches he gave in Reynolds (Not a dry eye in the house) and at the ESPY’s were not some of the most memorable (you can probably quote some if not all of it – and have) motivational speeches ever given. His work to start the ‘V Foundation’ has held many who are fighting cancer.

So in closing remember the good thing he did, learn from the down side, and support two quality coaches and their efforts to find cures for a disease that kills without discrimination and has touched more lives at State than anything else.

The name and the man are legendary, admired, and familiar to almost everyone in the country, not to mention the younger kids that will make up future for NCSU. The good he accomplished has always overshadowed the bad, so much so that it is rediculious to even mention now. The simple minds in Raleigh are the only people on the planet who still can’t comprehend the fact that they are missing out on the easiest opportunity anyone could have for built in and legendary status in a sports arena. So I say stamp a big VALVANO on the hardwood, and ride the wave of NC State’s past good fortunes from here on out.

    Three wishes:

    1. Coach Lowe lures Jai Lucas to Raleigh to run the point.

    2. Cam Bennerman gets a shot in the NBA and makes SportsCenter with a raging dunk over Sheldon Williams.

    3. We make it through an entire telecast without someone mentioning how we “ran Herb Sendek out of town.” (Okay, that’s totally unrealistic. Sorry.)

    RED,

As normal you got it perfect again.

  12. Lee Fowler 01/01/2007 at 12:40 PM #

Our “leaders” are too busy looking for their next steak dinner and trying to find a golf course they’ve yet to play.

My biggest wish would be to get a win over UNC this year to at least split with them. While I’m hot, also winning the ACC tournament would be an added bonus.

  14. tvp 01/01/2007 at 1:35 PM #

    ACC title is my wish.

Odds aren’t good, but hey…it could happen.

  15. Woof Wolf 01/01/2007 at 1:45 PM #

After we win the ACC Tournament, I wish for Brackman to pitch a complete game shutout in the championship game of the CWS.

  16. ncsumatman 01/01/2007 at 1:48 PM #

My wish is that the new coaching staff will realize that the best tailback on our team is Andre Brown, and distribute the carries accordingly.

  17. PAPacker 01/01/2007 at 2:41 PM #

I wish that Burke or Beck quickly and clearly emerge as the man in the fall.

That Farnold Degand play as well as his name is strange and become a killer point guard.

That Brown and Baker come to understand the value of chip blocks and actually throw a few in the fall.

    For a reborn offensive line.

  18. PAPacker 01/01/2007 at 2:51 PM #

For the return of the webrun on packpride. Does it all have to be for money, guys?

That packpass emerge as a major means of wolfpackers watching state games over their computers and hence sparing us from having to watch vermin sports outlets with their idiot broadcasters such as espnu, foxsportsnetsouth (they don’t allow viewers outside the south to view despite our paying big money for directtv packages that offer fsnsouth with the games blackedout, but hey, I can watch all the poker I want!), espn and lincolnfinancial(Lord help us).

That until this happens, that the Gottlieb’s, Giminski’s, and that idiot who did color on the State-Michigan game, actually learn about the schools they are covering before trotting out two hours of errors, mispronunciations and misunderstandings.

  19. PAPacker 01/01/2007 at 3:12 PM #

Plays designed to cover the amount needed to convert a third or fourth down.

  20. RickJ 01/01/2007 at 3:20 PM #

My wish is that Dean Smith is obliterated as the all time wins leader in Division 1 college basketball.

  21. legacyman 01/01/2007 at 4:38 PM #

    Rick,

You just got your wish…Bobby is king now and deano is an also ran pretender…finally.

  22. blpack 01/01/2007 at 4:48 PM #

I wish my prediction of Roy retiring soon comes true and K goes with him.
We win at least 8 games next fall and beat the holes.
Sidney’s recruiting continues to go well.

  23. BorntoHowl 01/01/2007 at 5:40 PM #

A top 15 football recruiting class, Jai Lucas comes to play basketball, and we beat the spread in every game State plays in…. all sports.

  24. aPACKadeez 01/01/2007 at 6:33 PM #

I hope that our basketball team finishes respectfully this year, and that Hickson, Smith, and Thomas are all that they are hyped up to be. I hope they will help put our program back up towards the upper echelon of ACC basketball. I also hope that Sidney can continue to recruit well, and that this first recruiting class wasn’t just some sort of a “fluke” due to the excitement around Sidney Lowe the “NBA” coach.

As far as football goes, I am wishing that we do decently, and without mental errors and penalties, and see what sort of a record we finish with then.

  25. ktpritch 01/01/2007 at 6:50 PM #

Simply that our teams play up to and every once in a while exceed their potential.
