A Vitale Called Game

A tip of the hat to someone on Pack Pride’s message board, but they didn’t give proper credit for the find when they said, “I saw this somewhere else”. (That’s a lot more than some of the SFN generated stuff that ends up on the message boards without any acknowledgement that it was first seen somewhere else).

Yet some people on those same message boards have the nerve to bitch about Billy Packer calling our game? He not only talked about THE GAME HE WAS CALLING, he also said he saw some V in Lowe last night.

I thnk Dean Martin would have been crushed for having been left out.

At least there’s no count on the number of “baby’s” or is there?

What, no Malcolm Jamal Warner references?

  4. ncsslim 01/25/2007 at 9:47 AM #

Reads like one of those insanely stupid “Family Circus” cartoons where little Billy goes to hell and back to cross the street.

Vitale what a tool, a big Duke fan. Packer is boring at times and can be very negative. Never forgot Packer in calling the 83 championship game he called that game totally one sided 100% expecting Houston to win until the last shot. He was totally shocked and even admitted as much years later. But that didn’t bother me what did was it took the man 20 years after Phil Ford left UNC before he could call an ACC game without mentoining or comparing some great guard move to Phil Ford. The man had UNC envy or something. But Packer is just a strange bird does wierd stuff like sleep in his car.

He was Jimmy V’s boy, so I give him a pass.

One frustrating thing with Billy Packer, especially on national broadcasts of ACC teams, is he has a hard time bringing out a good perspective / history of the ACC and the teams playing in an objective way. The man has a lot of history with this league and he could really give us some good PR.

Irritating thing about Vitale is he was a head coach in the NBA for an unsuccessful season, but did have success coaching in high school and a brief stint in the college ranks. The man has to have an above average understanding of basketball, to coach at those levels, but usually spends most of his broadcasts rambling through his loudmouth schtick.

I put up with Dickie V for one reason – his unabashed love of student-athletes and the game of college basketball. Sure he loves K and Duke, and it drives me nuts; but I also remember the crushing loss at Duke a few years back when Justin Gainey called a last second timeout when we had none left – and maybe cost State the game. Vitale went to the locker room after the game and had a long private pep talk with Justin. A nice gesture that Gainey later said he really appreciated.

Vitale was in The Naked Gun, so he gets a pass.
Dick Enberg was as well, but I will never get over him and Randy Cross bashing Philip during his comeback against Seattle.

What, no mention of Dante Calabria’s hair?

A few years ago, Vitale was calling a game at Kansas. I don’t remember who they were playing, but one of the guys from Kansas had a career game and led the Jayhawks to victory. When the kid was coming off the court toward the end of the game, Vitale made a huge deal about him, which isn’t so bad itself, but then he stood and applauded the kid. That’s great for fans to do, but for some supposedly “objective” broadcaster, it was disgusting. I wonder if he would have done that on the opposing team’s home court, had the game been played there?

He might as well just drop the facade and openly admit that he has his favorites. Everyone knows it, anyway.

Watching a Vitale game can drive one nuts. But one thing about Vitale, he is genuine as a person, the Gainey moment, a perfect example. Gopack said it best – he truly cares for the college game and the student athletes. Most people could care less about the kids – ever heard him speak to the athletes? Ever heard him at his camp? Should be required listening for all people, but he truly cares.

I have had the pleasure, and I mean pleasure of speaking to him in person on several occasions from our days in Reynolds. He remembered me, a nobody, from a previous visit and chat. Is he loud and obnoxious? Yes. Does he drop names? Yes. Does he ramble? Yes. But he is a man of character and integrity who truly cares about each and every kid who steps on the court, and frankly he is sick and tired of all the people who abuse these kids and leech onto them. If there were Dickie V’s the college game would be far better off.

And Cosmo, great point on Calabria’s hair. Only person with better hair than Calabria is Cosmo himself.

listening to vitale is like being on a bad acid flash back… or like listening to your grandfather talk about WWII.
“you know back then ALL we had to eat was sauerkraut, which back then was called liberty cabbage.” and “the important thing to remember was that i had an onion tied to my belt. but it wasnt one of those nice white onions, it was one of those big yellow ones. which was all you could get back then, because of the war of course.”

a shiny nickel goes to first person who guesses the reference

    Abraham Simpson…
another of his great ones, “We always had turkey on thanksgiving, which in my day has called a walking bird, so we had walking bird with all the fixin’s cranberrys, injun eyes, and yams filled with gun powder….”

Dude. I’m not sure who has more problems, Dickie V for not being on topic or able to focus or you for taking the time to note them all. I’ll go with DV as you’ve only done this once and his is habitual.
