SFN’s Take: TOB > PJ

SFN has been hearing from a variety of sources that Boston College head man Tom O’Brien has emerged as a serious contender for the NC State job. As you may know, O’Brien has taken some heat from the Eagle faithful for not being able to get BC over the proverbial hump. While we agree that O’Brien may have maxed out what he is able to accomplish in Beantown, we do not believe that his ceiling would necessarily be limited at NC State.

O’Brien is supposedly willing to make a move because Boston is a pro sports town, almost exclusively. BC also has a small alumni base, which has led to good Eagle teams getting subpar bowl bids. The argument is that better bowls would lead to more recruiting momentum, as would a thriving, college-town environment – and ultimately, a chance at more success at NC State.

Of course, you might note that you could say the same thing about Paul Johnson. There is some truth to that. However, we believe that Tom O’Brien has some clear advantages over PJ – (i) BCS conference experience; (ii) has recruited at least some premium athletes; (iii) less potential to be negatively recruited against successfully; and (iv) a stronger staff (with pretty remarkable continuity).

O’Brien is no spring chicken, but young enough (58) to have a good ten year run at NC State. Plus, we already know his likely “floor” – 7-9 win seasons, which would at least get NC State into good bowl games periodically. We also think that it is reasonable to hope for greater success (contention for ACC titles) with a fresh start and a different environment to work in. Is it guaranteed? No. But nobody is going to be a sure thing here. SFN thinks that O’Brien would be a very good choice.

Compared to Miami’s search for a new coach, I’d say the State’s search was pretty good. I think Miami will have trouble. So far, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano has taken his name out of the running after failing to get salary and facility assurances out of UM, and Bernie Kosar, a coach without coaching experience, threw his hat into the ring.

Well wolpfack, i somewhat agree. It’s the same as the herb situation here. Herb wasn’t exactly a BAD coach. We had just had enough of his style etc. here. He wasn’t the right fit with the fan base. BC fans are rejoicing because they got rid of their herb sendek. Does that mean he’s a bad coach? No. Does that mean that he won’t win championships? probably not. In this day and age in college football, if your coach doesn’t get you to a BCS bowl every year the so called “lunatic fringe” will complain.

Sometimes programs need a change and as far as i’m concerned this is a step up from Chuck. We have good facilites, better recruiting opportunites… First step for O brien is get us to a peach/gator bowl type game. Next step (Baker, Brown and Evans senior season) is win the ACC.
We have talent already. If he can coach the talent better than Amato did then we’re in good shape.

Just think to yourself. Chuck or O’Brien. If I had asked you this after our last game vs. ECU most of you would have said O’Brien.

wolpfack, I don’t know any of the details but from a distance it seems that BC has been leveled out on a pretty respectable plain for awhile, but their fans feel they could inch on up even higher. They may appear ridiculous to most onlookers, but I understand their pain.

Hopefully O’Brian will have the facilities and backing he needs to quickly guide us to where he’s been before, and then beyond.

I just don’t like the inner conference switch.

Well the faculty advisory council has to be rejoicing. We may not win any big games or ACC championships but we won’t finish last either. But boy look at that graduation rate improvement, we’ll be at the top of the Sagarin grad charts.

Our future is: Hillary is President, Pelosi is the SOTH, LF is our AD and TOB is our coach. How does that Buffett song go? Only the Wino and I know the pain….

Can anyone think of a similar situation where a “solid” coach left one BCS school for another and was MORE successful?

The poster child for this kind of move is Tommy Tuberville making an inter-league jump from Ole Miss to Auburn. He did OK at Ole Miss, but has done very well at Auburn.

Mack Brown has had more success at Texas than he did at UNC. I don’t consider him a solid coach, but he sure has a knack for recruiting solid players and assistants.

^Purple…I dunno…nothing against TOB, I want to see what he can do here, I really do, and hopefully he will exceed how he was doing at BC…but somehow this just seems to be more of a lateral move…it was the safe move…its that whole asking your female friend to be your date to prom when neither of you have a date b/c you know you wont be rejected…

I was really hoping that we were going to take a “risk” with this hire…ask that hot cheerleader…sometime you’ve gotta say f#ck, make your move…and I dont feel like we did that here…now, I’ll admit, I wanted Jimbo, but even PJ would have been damn near close to that cheerleader…I just dont feel in my heart of hearts that we gave it our best shot…I feel like Jed took the easy way out and that just irks me…

    1) PJ got a call from a $35,000 a pop head hunter and was asked if he was interested in the NCSU job. He didn’t call us; We did’n’t call him. Makes me wonder what his answer was.
    2) PJ raided NCSU coaching staff for 1 assistant and another was fired for requesting an interview. Chuck was steamed and I expect the big-buck contributors were too. 3) Add 1 & 2 together and see if you think PJ was ever seriously considered? I doubt it.
    3) Jimbo was saved a trip to Raleigh, which IMNSHO was a very professional thing to do. Not professional for Jimbo or his consorts to run their mouths about it.
    4) I have no idea how national this search was. It certainly stretched from New England to the Bayous of Lousiana. That’s not exactly provincial.
    5) I was jealous of UNX for the quick hire and a lot of hands were wrung because of various opinions about lost recruiting ground. This hire is reasonably quick and now some want to say it was too quick. Go figure.
    6) I got some not-so-great LTRs but my ass will be in them from kick-off until the last whistle.
    GO PACK!!!

4ever, are you an artist by chance? Just wondering, because you surely do paint some wild pictures of very ordinary events.

    1) Not that he’s won’t ever budge, but Paul Johnson may be somewhat happy where he is right now, apparently TOB was not at all. I’m sure PJ can read also, so he may have prefered to coach somewhere that his bosses actually contribute positively and make his job easier. That would eliminate NCSU from consideration right off the bat.
    2) PJ is from NC, he knows people here, so it makes perfect sense that he had contacts here, and hired a coach away from this area. At least he wasn’t competing with us regularly on the field of play. That comment is absolutely ludicrous, when YOU THINK that NCSU/BOT/Oblinger/Fowler just hired another HEAD coach away, from within their own conference and divisional rival? I wouldn’t doubt that they weren’t thinking just like Wolfpack4ever though, and still holding PJ’s earlier assistant coach “raiding” against him. Just typical.
    3) A simple phone call to Jimbo Fisher rated high marks from you for it’s professionalism. I’ll bet mr head hunter did that one too. I’m sure there wasn’t any more effort involved in a simple phone call than the time we both took to type these BS posts. It’s just common courtesy to make that “PROFESSIONAL” phone call anyway, so big hairy deal either way.
    4) I’m not so sure about the scope of the search. I don’t think you are either.
    5) You’re twisting again. The process wasn’t TOO QUICK, but it may well have been too narrow.
    6) Paraphrasing for you here, with your own words from #6: “I got” “my ass” “kick”

    GO WolfPACK4ever!!!

[…] As SFN noted earlier today, we agree with the apparent decision of the NC State search committee – Tom O’Brien is a better hire than Paul Johnson. And pretty much everyone agreed that Johnsoin would be a good hire, and clearly an upgrade over Amato. […]
