Florida or Michigan?

OK, so who should play Ohio State for the BCS Championship?

First some rules:

1) Mandatory Required Reading before responding:

Dan Wetzel’s thoughts and summary

Sagarin Rankings

2) No mention of a playoff allowed!

3) Act your age or IQ (whichever is higher) 😉

4) No arguing…state your case and move on.

I’ll go first:

I vote for Florida for the following reasons:

– Michigan did not impress me in their first matchup with OSU.

– I don’t want to see a Big 10 rematch for the BCS championship.

– I think that in a 1 vs 2 format, conference championships should be an important consideration.

– The “numbers” are so close that they are virtually worthless in trying to separate the teams. Thus my vote is far more emotional than logical.

Boise State. The only other Division I team that did not lose a game.

Without being repetitive, Florida by all of the reasons above. SEC, a tougher conference, SEC East, the toughest division in the SEC, and Michigan finished 2nd in their conference!

My only hedge has to do with some of Urban Meyer’s playcalling yesterday, but with a little luck, his players bailed him out of it. Chris Leak is not an option QB!

Not to be argumentative, but …. Florida, Georgia, Tennessee. UK, Vandy & USC

aren’t as good as LSU, Arkansas, Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss & MSU

I believe, if the title game is supposed to be between the BEST two teams in the nation, you cannot deny Michigan. Their only loss was on the road to the #1 team in the nation by only 3 points! If that game was at a neutral site, I really believe Michigan may have won the game. If we were to have an OSU vs MI national title game in football, that would be the equivalent of a Duke vs UNC national title game in basketball. It would be great for college football.

On the other hand, Florida is in the SEC…we all know that. Sometimes they look like the best team in the country. Other times, it looks like NCSU could beat them…with Amato as coach. If I was the president of UF or the SEC, I would scream and yell if they didn’t get in, but I just do not think they are as good a team as Michigan.

Of course, this could all be solved with a “plus one”….wait, we’re not supposed to mention a playoff.

I never thought I would advocate for Florida for anything, but I believe the SEC is the strongest football conference top to bottom and they are the SEC champ.

New Coaches Poll: Florida #2, Midchigan #3.

  9. redfred2 12/03/2006 at 2:29 PM #

Trying my damnest not to argue here, though it’s against my nature not to, but I would hate to think that NCSU’s hopes for a national championship were dashed by a 3 point loss to the #1 team in the country, and on the #1 team’s home field, no less.

If that is the ruler being used, then no 1 loss team deserves a chance, and Boise State should be considered for the NC game.

I’m glad I’m not on the committee anyway. If Boise State, though most likely it will be Florida, but if someone, doesn’t step up and beat OSU in the championship game, it will be a another controversial crowning of the national champion this season.

Oh well, that’s college football, and that’s why I LOVE IT!!! just exactly the way it is!

    Florida.

The comparative chart that Gary Danielson showed last night in the 4th quarter was a fantastic vehicle to get folks to see the comprehensive picture with which I agree.

Michigan’s one loss (at OSU) is a tad better than UF’s (at Auburn).

After that, UF played a tougher opponent in almost every other game of the season than Michigan. Heck, they even beat Vandy at Vandy and Michigan got them at home.

Game for game, UF put together a better season than Michigan with a lot more wins against more difficult competition. Therefore, UF deserves the chance to play for the national title.

Florida because they are the conference champion in the best overall conference, but I think Michigan would beat them head to head.

Florida, because the computers will spit out all the needed info to declare them worthy of facing the current #1. It’s all hypothetical (mythical) of course.

  14. MatSci94 12/03/2006 at 6:49 PM #

I’ll say Michigan. I’d like to see Ohio State loose (don’t really know why…I just do) and I don’t think Florida can do it.

  15. LSUTigerFan 12/03/2006 at 7:23 PM #

Florida should get it because they played in a much tougher league, and overall, they faced tougher opponents.

Michigan should get it because nothing has happened since the OSU/Michigan game that should change voter’s perceptions. Florida was supposed to beat both FSU and Arkansas, and since they did, why should they leap over Michigan in the polls? If Michigan played yesterday, would this even be a debate in the voters’ minds? If they change their votes to manipulate the outcome, the system loses all integrity.

On a sidenote, the fact that USC would have gotten in had they beat UCLA is ridiculous. Talk about a beauty contest. They lost to the worst team, by far, of any of the one loss teams, and they barely won 4 games against 4 of the 5 worst teams in a sorry Pac 10 conference.

Realistically, if we’re debating, why should Ohio State be a shoe-in? Because they beat a Texas team with a freshman QB in the second game of the season or because they beat there archrival by 3 at home? The Big Ten was pretty horrible this year and Ohio State didn’t even have to play the 3rd best team. That being said, I do agree that Ohio State is most deserving, I just don’t think its as clear cut as everyone likes to believe.

By the way, the Sagarin ratings are flawed. Maybe all the computer rankings are flawed. I don’t know if it’s strength of schedule element coming from the Pac 10 adding a 9th conference game, but how can anyone rank the Pac 10 above the SEC? There is definitely something wrong here. Looking at the head to heads (including the scores) and the out of conference performance, its not even close. The SEC’s number 5 team throttled the PAC 10’s number 2 team, and the 3 and 4 teams in the SEC gave two of the PAC 10’s #5 teams their worst losses of the season.

Anyway, I hope Michigan does get in because it gives us the best chance of blowing up the current system. The SEC would then have been screwed by the system three out of the last four years.

The Harris Poll has Florida at #2 also. It’s a done deal.

Just announced – Florida it is.

A field goal, on a home field no less, has just won the 2006 NCAA Football Championship for Ohio State University.

    Boo!

Good point LSU, I know Troy Smith is the best player on the best offense, but I watched Michigan, OSU, and Florida several times this year, and if you think OSU is gonna roll in and blow Florida out, you haven’t been paying attention. Florida’s offense controls the ball, and it speedy defense doesn’t give up big plays. They are gonna keep pressure on OSU, the kind of play by play pressure they only really had to deal with once this year. Meanwhile, Florida is battle tested week in week out, the stronger steel always comes out of the hottest fire. And instaed of comparing losses, lets compare the best wins, LSU would stomp Wisconsin if those two teams played. How about the second best win, Arkansas vs. ND, likely an Irish embarassment. How about the third, Tennesee would beat Penn St., etc. I am more impressed by who you beat, not who beats you.

Michigan. Who deserves it be damned.
    1) given the last OSU-UM game, the rematch on neutral turf makes for great ratings.
    2) Florida playing for and/or winning a National Championship does nothing for NCSU’s recruiting efforts in Florida.

  21. highonlowe 12/04/2006 at 9:54 AM #

I predict Florida beats OSU in a month, concluding this arguement. (Troy throws 2 ints)

Anyone who says Boise State should have played for the championship should be tarred, feathered, and banned from this site.

Its good to see that the underdogs put a spanking on the boys from the Big 10. I’m tired of of the Big 10 getting all the hype and its always a pleasure for me to watch them lose. Maybe Boise State should have played Florida.
