Callahan: Refreshing Apology to Fans

Before you read the following comments from this article you should click here to get a feel for what it must be like in Nebraska.

Nebraska’s Bill Callahan on Monday apologized to Cornhuskers fans for his coaching performance in the Big 12 championship game.

“I was disappointed in everything I did,” Callahan told reporters on a conference call. “I could have done a better job. I just didn’t do enough. As I go through the week, I’m taking inventory of where we’ve got to get better, what changes we have to make. If we have to change some things, I’m going to change them. I’m looking at it really hard.”

“Our fans waited a long time for that, and I apologize to them,” Callahan said. “I’m really, really upset with that performance. It all falls on my shoulders. I’m pretty aggravated, to say the least.”

    You people!

King makes some incredibly stupid comments in that interview.

  3. partialqualifier 12/05/2006 at 9:21 AM #

Why does King feel the need to comment on the QB situation at NC State?

I agree with Cardiff….very ignorant comments throughout. I love the way he and a lot of others keep banging that “We need a guy with head coaching experience” drum. I am not saying I totally disagree, but he is doing what a lot of others are doing…looking at the example of Amato and pretending that every assistant on earth would run the smae kind of undisciplined program that Amato did. You have to look at where the assistant is coming from. FSU is a very undisciplined football program, and he was the Asst. Head Coach. What did you expect?

I sure hope Beck is not having regrets about now. God knows everyone oves a QB contreversy with FOUR poetial candidates. Is this Div I football or a Presidential primary? It will be a fun sub plaot after all this choas is over.
Nebraska is not exactly us. Has anyone been to Lincoln before? You really need distractions out there on the Platte basin ever since the exciting cattle drives and dust bowls ended. It is just very serious out there. They get amped over volleyball, anything to get people to stop watching corn and Warren Buffets investments, grow.
I admire their success over the decades. And the awareness that the public have a right to share with concerns of the administration at Neraska is sincere and refreshing.

Hiring a head coach doesn’t guarantee anything. All great head coaches were at one time assistants.

  6. Dan 12/05/2006 at 9:39 AM #

    I agree with Cardiff.

My favorite part of that interview was when he just about eliminated everyone in two sentences.

Wow. King seems like everyone else out there who has an opinion of who should run the program. While I don’t share his opinion on assistant coaches, I do agree with the better part of his statement about Paul Johnson and the larger implications of how PJ’s offensive ideology would convey with respect to recruiting, let alone if a predominantly run-oriented offense would work. Grobe’s got a nice program over in W-S, but I have to say I’d rather watch paint dry than watch the Orange Bowl this year. That’s not taking anything away from Wake, they have a good program and will be solid year in and year out. But, like Wendell Murphy said, “we didn’t invest $100 million dollars for state-of-the-art facilities to play losing football”. I have nothing against PJ, but three yards and a cloud of dust simply won’t get it done here.

Does anyone find it interesting that PJ seems to be playing us with Bama? Even if there were concensus, do we really want someone that apparently doesn’t have us as a first choice?

  9. foz 12/05/2006 at 10:11 AM #

King sounds like he has a seriously high opinion of himself. It’s funny how he has complete confidence in LF, but then proceeds to dictate what he thinks should be done.

  10. foz 12/05/2006 at 10:14 AM #

And the QB comment was way out of line.

  11. choppack1 12/05/2006 at 10:16 AM #

“Even if there were concensus, do we really want someone that apparently doesn’t have us as a first choice?”

Do you think we’d be Jimbo’s first choice if say Alabama, LSU, Miami, USC, UCLA, Tennessee, VaTech, etc, etc, etc – had an opening and were seriously courting him? If Jimbo wants to be in Raleigh so bad, why didn’t he come here 2 years ago?

I can’t believe SFN hasn’t commented on Kings idiotic interview. You hear stuff like that and the comments are so stupid it’s embarassing.

Mr. King makes Mr. Fowler look like a media relations wizard.

    Ouch.

  13. crackdog 12/05/2006 at 10:23 AM #

Wow, someone put a muzzle on that guy. When you’re on a board, your personal feelings, comments, and trivia have to be thrown out- at least in the public eye. Does this guy have any idea that people besides students actually do read Technician? Wow…. just wow.

On another note, App State runs a run-first, pass second adaptation of the single wing that I find incredibly entertaining to watch.

  14. vtpackfan 12/05/2006 at 10:23 AM #

Ah shucks! Well that clears up a bit of who wants ‘ole Sheridan back.

  15. foz 12/05/2006 at 10:29 AM #

Off subject – did you hear that Chapel Hill approved adding 8800 seats to Kenan? I didn’t know every UNC fan needed 2 seats.

  16. Red_Terrors 12/05/2006 at 10:47 AM #

Thats just more tickets for the visiting team to buy up on Ebay.

  17. test4eko 12/05/2006 at 11:13 AM #

“Off subject – did you hear that Chapel Hill approved adding 8800 seats to Kenan? I didn’t know every UNC fan needed 2 seats.”

This is known as the “Fair-weathered Friends Zone” where Rams Club members and season ticket holders can sponsor alumni or locals who weren’t initially aware that UNX had a football program until Butch Davis’ recent signing. I’m just shocked that its only 8800.

No one should be discounting any options at this point. Otherwise, Mr King will only create an uproar among his ranks, if he’s forced to eat his own words in the end.

As far as the QB position, I’m sure the new coach will make that determination without any assistance from Mr King.

You would have never hear Sendek or Amato apologize…they both gave me the impression that they thought they could do no wrong.

  20. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 12/05/2006 at 5:38 PM #

Sendek always, ALWAYS blamed the players or ‘execution’ as he would put it. Never, EVER was it his game plan. What a ‘stand-up guy’ as some love to call him around here.
