Talking the Talk: Amato Should Resign with Loss to UNC

Does it feel particularly quiet for the week of State-Carolina?

It definitely feels quiet to us.

The N&O’s ACCNow Blog has a quick item about the game today in “Talking the Talk”.

How else do you explain two straight losses to UNC? Would you argue that UNC has been a better team than N.C. State?

At least in terms pf NFL talent, there is no discussion. Last April, N.C. State had six players drafted, and three in the first round of the NFL Draft, and Carolina had one, in the seventh round.

That doesn’t mean State should automatically beat Carolina, but it undoubtedly reflects poorly on Amato and his coaching staff. And conversely, John Bunting’s 3-2 record against State stands as the crowning achievement of his tenure in Chapel Hill.

The real interesting comments from the N&O come from their “Late Hits” column. Beside an arrow pointing downward the blog said:

Not for the current five-game losing streak but for the inevitable loss to North Carolina on Saturday. That’s right, a preemptive down arrow. Chuck Amato, who at worst should be 5-1 against UNC, should resign if he loses a third straight to a Carolina program that has been below average at best during his tenure.

‘Off the field’ comes this fantastic piece from Andrew Jones about Chuck Amato.

Despite a caricature image of red shoes, sunglasses and well-toned pectoral muscles, Amato is a man of substance unseen by fans. A man who holds a degree in mathematics and a master’s in education, both from N.C. State. A man who visits a friend in the hospital daily in hopes of sparking optimistic thoughts. A man with a tough-guy image who tears up when he hears the notes of Ave Maria.

This is a nice link on Philip Rivers that you may want to post later.

I am a man who tears up every time i see us throw a 2 yard outlet pass on 3rd and 7.

Okay — so 2 Tarheels walk into a bar. Ouch. They said. Who put that bar there?

I think the chatter is down because we are seeing the equivalent of the only bowl each school will go to. The Toilet Bowl.

A 1-9 team with no Div I-A wins versus a 3-7 team (with a Div 2-A loss) – and fans on both sides are going —

Tarheel: Well we ain’t got nothing to lose.
    Pack fan: “Reverse the curse”

Both side are going to enjoy the win. But no one wants to boast ahead of time. Oh — except for those Tarholes who keep bringing up basketball during football blogs.

packbakr — I think the name of that tune is Ave Chuckato 🙂

The cynical among us would say that now that Chuck is not doing so well we will start to see favorable articles in the media about him. Is this the start?

  6. partialqualifier 11/15/2006 at 5:57 PM #

That was a fantastic piece by Andrew Jones. I read it earlier today and found myself wishing I hadnt been so hard on Chuck. I think those who read that article will feel the same way. I absolutely hate that it has come to this. We want to win with this coach really bad. All of us want this to work…nobody wants to have to fire Chuck. But at the end of the day, we deserve success at NC State…and no matter how much I love Amato personally and respect him as a man…at some point it has to get back to progress ON the field.

Thank you SFN for putting that up here. Maybe we can get it figured out.

It’s not about personality it’s about production. I think we all were behind Chuck in the beginning but at some point the record is the record. The program’s well being supercedes any one coach, AD or alum.

  8. richdail 11/15/2006 at 6:30 PM #

Yes, I have always tried to refrain from personal attacks on Amato, even when he has said some really questionable things or made some particularly questionable calls on the field. I will continue to respect him and even admire him for what he has accomplished personally and for the school. But after supporting him through thick and thin all they way up to the Southern Miss game, it no longer appears to me that Coach Amato can take us to the next level.

Sometimes I wonder who will be able to take us to the next level. Maybe we just need to suffer with the guy a little bit, I don’t know.

Jay Smith 4 star WR to NCSU!!!

  11. Sam92 11/15/2006 at 7:08 PM #

It’s not about condemning Chuck as a person – that’s not the point and it’s not necessary. Simply put, he’s had seven years to take us to the next level, he’s not meeting expectations, and he should be fired.

Some people have different expectations – like last year being acceptable, and they should be in the mix defending Chuck, but hopefully they won’t carry the day.

It’s also about money — ditching Chuck requires an expensive buyout, and unfortunately we don’t seem to have the money flowing as freely as our friends at UNC-Carrboro. Maybe Mr. Murphy and his friends come in to save the day, but maybe they don’t.

Someone else made a great point the other day — the head coach is not where we need an alum. It’s harder to fire them for sentimental reasons. Where we need an alum is in the Athletic Director’s office, but unfotunately we have dopey Lee Fowler instead. Worst of both worlds on that one.

    More than AGREED!

Chuck resigns after third consecutive loss to UNC, the last one agaisnt 1-9 UNC? sounds resonable to me

“Jay Smith 4 star WR to NCSU!!!”

All we need now are some OLs to give him time to run his route downfield.

  15. legacyman 11/15/2006 at 8:10 PM #

Right on. Get some more…get a lot of…big uglies. And get them quickly. The problem is that we don’t get much production from an 18 yr old kid. He has to be fed and locked in the weight room to grow into a big boy. So even if we get 10 of them this year, it will two to three yrs before they contribute.

I hope the kids that were reshirted this year will help some next year.

  16. Wolf-n-Atl 11/15/2006 at 8:15 PM #

What players have we been redshirting? Do we have any depth on the lines that is being redshirted and could contribute next year?

  17. TomA 11/15/2006 at 8:30 PM #

Personally if we lose to UNC again I will “tear up!” My worse nightmare would be if we lose to Carolina and Carolina loses to Duke. My wife would be thanking the Good Lord that our oven is electric and not gas!

The piece by Andrew Jones didn’t do anything for my confidence in Charles Amato’s ability to lead us to the next level. It did explain for me the love and respect the players have for him. And I am clear about this: I will love and respect Charles Amato regardless of his fate at NCSU.

Saturday will bring a win or a loss to Charles’ record. Although I hope it is a win — the thought of ‘sacrificing’ one with the Holes to rid us of Coach Amato makes me sick to my stomach — I seriously doubt that there is a ‘quit’ or ‘resign’ bone in his body.

I hope he is able to win the last 2 and stay another year. Many would say that is high risk proposition. High risk gambles must bring high rewards if they are to be taken. The high reward for the university and the fans should Coach Amato be able to turn it around next year and in the future is having the kind of man I read about in Andrew Jones, coaching our football team.

Yes, 7 years is long enough, most of us agree. But what if it isn’t? What if it takes one more year. We may give up hope and quit on Coach Amato, but Coach Amato will never give up. Coach Amato will be here next year and I for sure am not betting against him. I hope for the sake of the young men on scholarship at NCSU I am right.

SFN says, “The real interesting comments from the N&O come from their “Late Hitsâ€? column.”

It “real” interesting only if you are one of the vultures circling overhead, waiting for Coach Amato to fall down dead. That flippant a$$hole, JP Gigolo, will be the first one the bandwagon when Coach Amato turns this thing around.

We don’t have a loss against a 2-A school. Do you mean a 2-A win?

“Talking the Talk: Amato Should Resign with Loss to UNC

Resign, let go, whatever. My stance has been let this season play out. Amato for my lone voice in the desert is hanging by a thin thread. Lose to the 1-9 Goats and it is sealed for me. I am no longer in the Amato camp.

I hope State wins… and I hope Amato succeeds in Raleigh. 2 losing seasons in the last 3 years though is not acceptable. Of course.. should State beat UNC and then lose to ECU, I will probably feel the same way.

    God losing sucks.

  22. jwrenn29 11/15/2006 at 11:35 PM #

Chuck being a good person isn’t Chuck being a good coach. I want a good coach that is also a good person. COACH is the concern here. I’d be friends with Chuck. But that doesn’t mean I tell him that he’s good at what he does in order to keep a friend. Friends tell it like it is. NCSU is NOT GOOD at football right now. And it’s been going downhill for 3 years consecutively with incredible talent on the team…I don’t have an answer either. But I do know something’s wrong with the team and I wish it would get fixed!

  23. BoKnowsNCS71 11/16/2006 at 7:27 AM #

    Sorry – I didn’t give Akron its due as a 1-A school.

We did beat a 1-A school like UNC did.

At least we can hang our hats on that.

  24. wvillepack 11/16/2006 at 7:49 AM #

Amato will get a chance next year regardless of the outcome the next two weekends. Meanwhile, we lose ground in recruiting. I say we pass the hat around and raise the funds necessary to get the right staff in place.
I would really hate for Chuck to be run out of town the way Herb was. I vote for Cowher for head coad, Logan for OC and Amato for DC.

wvillepack Says: “Meanwhile, we lose ground in recruiting.”

Someone just posted that we just got a commitment from a 4-star receiver. Don’t wring your hands over recruiting. Many sign with the school and not all go away at rumors the HC might get fired. I could be wrong, all I know about recruiting I get here, but the Holes are reportedly having an outstanding recruiting year — losing record and all.
