Squeezing in the Roundball

State #35

With so much focus on Chuck Amato and NC State Football, a basketball entry isn’t going to hold a lot of interest for a lot of our readers. Regardless, we didn’t want to completely drop the ball on the topic. So, in the event that you are interested, we wanted to quickly turn your attention to a few things:

* If you have not yet gone “On the Record” with your expectations for this year’s basketball team, then you need to get your opinions chronicled now. Click here for our entry and your opportunity to join the conversation.

* BJD and I “live blogged” some comments during Friday night’s win over Delaware State from our Blackberries in the comments section of this entry. Don’t laugh, but Delaware State may end up being an NCAA Tournament team this year. I’m just saying; I can still dream that these wins mean something. You can tell from our comments how enjoyable it was to watch the new Wolfpack. Our friends at Section Six have a deeper statistical look at Friday’s game.

* Last week was an interesting week in the world of college basketball and this article hits a lot of interesting items that are related to NC State like Sean Miller, Maryland, our friends at Georgetown, Greg Marshall and others.

* We are going to have some really good basketball recruiting analyses and roster conversations coming after CJ Williams makes his announcement tomorrow. Until then we ask that you peruse our archive of Basketball Recruiting entries. We think that you will enjoy.

* We had this entry regarding Arizona State’s first game (and first loss) of the season to Northern Arizona. It looks like the bloom is falling of the rose quickly in Tempe where the Sun Devils were beaten this weekend AT HOME by Portland State in front of a sparse crowd of only about 1,200 (as estimated by some people in attendance). The Sun Devils did win one game on a night of “firsts”:

“It was an evening of firsts on Wednesday night at Wells Fargo Arena. It was the first ever collegiate game for Cal State San Bernardino, the first time in quite a while that the Sun Devils had five players in double digit scoring, and more importantly the 69-52 victory was head coach Herb Sendek’s first win in his ASU tenure.

* Herb’s first win at ASU was over a school playing their first collegiate game EVER. How do measure the historical RPI of a school that has never played a college game?

classic on herb, I hope the man does well but this should sit real well with all the people who blasted us for wanting him gone.

Who is CJ williams expected to announce for?

By the way, I LOVED the live blog. I’ll take that over the live stat tracker from gopack.com any day!

I, too, went to the Delaware State game and left feeling better than I thought I would about the situation our basketball program is in. Sid was animated and the team played like they were having fun. I saw all the “unseeable” things that have been missing the last few years. Grant looked impressive and the team rallied around him. We’re not deep, at all, but what can one expect with the losses from a year ago?

I also went to the Carolina game on Sunday. It was tough to watch. They are deep. And their two-deep guys could handedly whip most college teams in the country. They substitute and the level of play increases. Horrid visions of the “blue team” of yesteryear danced in my head– my head that throbbed with every bounce their stupid mini-student section made that shook the seats we were sitting in. Didn’t they know I had just spent approximately 10 hours the night before drinking as much brown liquor as my liver could handle in an attempt to black out the football game? I’m not sure what was more painful: the hangover or the realization that the Roy is building the Heels into something even better than they were before. Scary, but true.

I think Sid is going to rejuvenate the Pack. I’m not too worried about that. I am, however, worried that we didn’t make the move several years sooner so Sid would at least have a chance to do so neck and neck with Roy. My fear is that the head start he got while we were still stomaching the private school offense with public school players is ultimately going to be too much for Sid to make up.

Nonetheless, I saw a lot… and I mean A LOT… to be excited about watching the Pack beat the Bulldogs.

^ I believe Sid can compete with Huckleberry Hound.

State had a chance to take a step forward while Carolina was having a tough time after the Gut years and we had one or two players leaving our program every year because the coach sucked. Sucks that the people with the money and power but with little vision wanted to stay the course.

We can just be very happy that the last coach finally resigned and we have the man we do today.

“My fear is that the head start he got while we were still stomaching the private school offense with public school players is ultimately going to be too much for Sid to make up.”

Basketball may be the easiest of major collegiate sports to “make up” lost time. Football has depth issues and baseball has skill issues of greater magnitude that basketball. A recruiting year like Michigan’s Fab Five, levels the field instantly at any level. A couple or three players can make a huge difference. Regardless how talented the depth is, they can only shoot the ball one at a time, and put five on the floor at a time.

Sid is showing the ability to recruit and level the field quickly.

sid will be ok, and can anyone catch roy? we will see, but i am more excited about basktball now than i ever have been. good things are coming.

Can we stop talking about Herb? Let him live with mediocrity. I swear we are like a ex who has to be right.

    Top10

Actually good analogy….you see we are divorced. Like two bickering married folks Herb and a majority of the Wolfpack Nation had been fighting for years. …some of the kids backed mom more and some backed dad more but all of them with an IQ over 100 knew the relationship would end in divorce. Now Herb gets to say the he left us…but most of us know that he was forced out…by the fans if not the admin…got to think the shout down at the ACC championships was the straw that broke the camels back ….and yes like a bitter divorce it is not going to heal overnight. I’m fine if we never mention his name again…but that will not happen…..

Just wanted to point out that two of our favorite Big East teams, Georgetown and Seton Hall, both got upset in basketball this past weekend. Georgetown got hammered down the line, but Jeff Green was on the bench with 5 fouls.

Larry Davis is picking up a few minutes at Seton Hall. He went 0-4 from the field, had 2 points from freethrows, and got 3 fouls in 10 minutes. He’s a freshman so his game isn’t quite there yet, but one has to wonder how he would be doing here.

evidently he is doing a doubleheader radio show tonight with coach lowe following… i am just wondering if you are going to cover this event tonight? I will be unable to listen to the show, but I cannot wait to see how his attitude is tonight when he faces the fans considering how ticked off he got this afternoon.

CJ Williams an ’07 LOI or ’08 verbal? PF or C? What an amazing coup it would be for Sid to inherit a team losing Ced and Brackman only to reload it with the likes of Hickson, Smith, and Williams. Awesome stuff.

DICKIE V AND THE DUKEYS BABY!!!

  15. one00_proof 11/20/2006 at 8:44 PM #

CJ Williams is an 08 verbal and a SG/SF. This kid from what people say is a pleasure to watch and is what you call a stat filler (a do everything kind of kid). He’s known for making tough shots and could be highly ranked once the analysts make their assessments.

“CJ Williams is an 08 verbal and a SG/SF.”

Did I miss something re this kid? Has he committed to us? Sorry if I am having a senior moment.

Lowe is already impressing me with the recruiting. I had little hopes we could land any player of quality in the next two years. He (and Larry Harris) has proven that we will be a lot better a lot sooner than most people think.

  18. WolfPup35 11/20/2006 at 10:32 PM #

The recruiting that Sid has been doing is VERY impressive! A new head coach, hired very late as far as time to recruit goes, has gone full steam ahead trying to get the best players he can get! It doesn’t matter to him if Carowhina AND Dook are after the same players, he goes after them anyway. If his recruits can come in and make an immediate impact, then this program has a very bright future indeed. LOGAN….LOGAN….LOGAN….oh, sorry…wrong sport for that one..:)

  19. cornellpackfan 11/20/2006 at 11:18 PM #

no legacyman i don’t think you are… he is supposed to announce on tuesday i believe. it is expected that he will announce for NCSU. I don’t know much about him other than he is a relative unknown to most of the recruiting services not that they really matter before his junior season and junior–>senior summer ball.

  20. one00_proof 11/20/2006 at 11:23 PM #

Oh sorry, I was merely answering the guys question thinking it was something along the lines as what are his options, ie. if he commits right now he can sign his LOI, or if he commits right now he can only be a verbal. I was basically saying that IF he commits, it will only be a verbal. But yeah, with all that said, it will be VERY surprising if he commits to some place other than NCSU.

Personal foul, unnecessary backstabbing on the editors.

  22. NCSUownzJoo 11/21/2006 at 8:33 AM #

You need to make more entries about basketball. Chuck isn’t going ANYWHERE this year. If he’s fired this year NCSU will have penalties of 2million next year. If they wait and let him go next year NCSU has $0 of penalties. It’s not going to happen this year so get off his case and focus on basketball.

Isn’t it great to have no expectation for B-ball this year and to just sit and enjoy? I don’t think we need to worry all that much about Roy. Did he worry all that much about Coach K when he came to town? There’s always a top flight program, a world beater, and if you keep worrying you lose sight of the mission. Sid is on the right track, recruiting as strong as possible in the time element he was given. And, the change in the style of play is just refreshing. Getting to an NCAA Championship is no easy task as many good teams find out each March, but Sid will at least have us in the hunt given some time and we’ll be competitive along the way.

  24. PackGirl 11/21/2006 at 10:16 AM #

If anyone missed Sid’s radio program last night, you can check out a transcript on the Packpride board. After reading it, I am even more impressed with Sid. He seems to be a great coach, father figure, and master psychologist all rolled into one. I liked this part especiallly:

“Caller: I heard a guy call in saying 83 was a miracle and I always thought had derrick not gotten hurt how many more games would state have won and then who would be calling it a miracle

Coach: Miracles are made.. we made that miracle, we put ourselves in a position to win, guys stepped up and made big plays every night from cozel mcqueen getting a rebound off a missed free throw, to lorenzo’s free throws against wake in the acc.. was it a miracle, some.. but we had a coach who believed in us, we had players who thought they could do it and we had more fans out there anywhere we went than anyone else…”
