Saunders Takes Bias to a New Level

When you expect someone to be incompetent and ultra-biased then it is nearly impossible for that person’s views or actions to cause a surprise. Therefore, when you consider that the N&O’s resident racist (Barry Saunders) found a way to reach new levels of incompetence and bias today then you wonder what is next out there.

For a little back drop, you need to be aware that the News & Observer’s Barry Saunders took the time to criticize NC State’s administration for not wanting to interview minorities during the Wolfpack’s search for a basketball coach back in April.

Then, NC State became the first athletics program in the Triangle to hire a minority to lead one of its primary sports and Saunders curiously disappeared without a peep after being so interested in the topic just days before. All you need to do is click here for 60 seconds to see the situation summarized for you.

Lest we wait no more, Wolfpackers!!! We finally have acknowledgement from brother Saunders that Sidney Lowe is black!!! And this is a good thing!!!

The crazy part about what you are about to read is that Saunders’ comments about Sidney Lowe come in the middle of an article complimenting UNC-CH for hiring a white guy named Butch after conducting a football search where no minorities were interviewed or considered for the job!

You think that this is too ridiculous to be true? Read for yourself how wonderful Carolina is for hiring a guy named Butch is 12.5% Cherokee Indian!!

This is not a joke. Evidently being 100% black isn’t as good for the race police as being 12.5% Native American. Who knew!? I learn something every day.

As a poster on a message board accurately summarized this craziness as follows:

Saunders blasts State for not interviewing minorities. State hires a minority (the 1st BBall or FBall at a triangle university). Saunders doesn’t make a big deal over State doing what he said we wouldn’t do. Carolina has a coaching search and doesn’t interview a minority but no word from Saunders. Carolina hires a white guy and Saunders writes an article that it is great that Carolina hires someone has relatives that were minority and finally mentions in passing that State hired a minority.

SFN could care less if Carolina tcontinues block access to minorities for the University’s leadership positions. But it was Barry Saunders that chose to make this issue a hot-buttom when he prematurely criticized NC State’s basketball search in April. So, it should come as no surprise that (in Barry Saunders’ world) it makes great sense to therefore praise UNC-CH for such a gutsy move with their 1/16th Native American. Don’t you get it?

I don’t either. Neither does this fantastic piece focusing on the same topic. Blog on, brother Sanders. (Not to be confused with ‘Saunders’)

Post-Script: Two follow-up comments from our readers that needed to be elevated here:

(1)

Lots of funny stuff here in addition to the hypocrisy:“Davis, after his introduction, told me that his great-grandfather was a full-blooded Cherokee and his grandfather was half-Cherokee.”

Butch’s ciphering abilities are going to fit right in at the flagship.

“Actually, Butch is Native American,” Baddour said. “He’s got a card in his wallet that identifies him.”

UNC is now the only school in the country that has a documented minority hire for a head coaching postion.

For those that don’t know, Saunders son is a highly recruited tight end out of Durham Riverside. He remains uncommitted but everyone knows he is going to UNC and would have even if they had hired David Duke.

(2)

By the way, the infamous ‘roll’ Davis refers to was originally based on brief interviews conducted by government-appointed agents at the turn of the century. The primary criteria was how Native American each person looked to a white guy sitting at a little folding table in a tent in the middle of a field in Oklahoma. Recent DNA results have shown that the average person walking down the street in New York City has as much Native American blood as anyone on the rolls. In fact, plans to settle once and for all Cherokee ancestry questions with DNA testing have been shelved and are the source of court proceedings for this very reason.None of this is to imply that Davis should not be rightly proud of his heritage. It is only to state that Barry Saunders, along with much of what passes for ‘academia’ over in Chapel Hill, are as out of touch and clueless as we could hope them to be.

He is and always has been a bigot and nothing he could ever do or say would change that. He’s best forgotten like yesterdays news.

I was hoping this was an article on LEN BIAS. Alas, it is not. Saunders is a one note joke. Clown shoes at best. Note the two Jay and Silent Bob references.

Does this mean that UNC is going to start singing the “Tomahawk chop” (FSU) song at every game? AHHHHH AHHHHH AHHHH AHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHH AHhhhhhhh

    “can’t change what people say”

You would be amazed what people try to pass of as minority in university circles. Remember, Ward Churchill tried to play an honorary tribal membership as his minority card.

In general, Saunders, um, isn’t good. That’s about all I can say without being naughty.

Since there was mention of Dykes on this thread, I’ll put my 2 cents in this post as well. The comments were crap, but I wouldn’t get to worked up over them as they are pound to happen due to product dilution. By that I mean ESPN, FSN all the local networks– there are just a rediculous number of games broadcast, and you end up with less quality both on play-by-pay and commentary. When a bad color commentator has minutes and minutes of dead air to fill left by a bad play-by-play announcer, you have the perfect storm of “journalistic” idiocy. Add in the current day Stephen A Smith mindset (if I ain’t load and I ain’t controversial, what’s the point) and you get what you heard Monday night.

I would comment to Dykes that he is really -something- that dead horse of an issue, and if he does want to keep it up he should move to Wisconsin. Apparently there, besteality laws don’t apply to dead animals.

To me, Barry should be treated just like the KKK: if we don’t give them any MEDIA attention maybe they’ll shut up. Racism, either way, is horrible. It never even occurred to me until this article that we hired a man of dark skin color. I never cared! All I knew was a coach with fire that had played for NCSU and won a NC is coming to coach our team and I was stoked! He’s not ‘a black man’, he’s Sidney Lowe a great man!

“I think a bunch of ya should go down to the N&O and lynch the sumbtch.”

Seriously? This was actually posted here?? Does anyone else think it’s a little soon for jokes like this? It’s not as if that sort of thing was happening all that long ago. Crosses still get burnt in people’s front yards in Durham.

Disagree with him all you want, call out his bigotry, skewer his columns – but let’s not stoop to joking about lynching. I’m sure black Pack fans would appreciate that.

I have an ancestor that was in the calvary. Guess that makes me full blooded injun fighter. I say teach the band the calvary charge. Lets play some circle the wagons defense and lets kick some injun ass like we been doing, we been beating Seminoles right regular look forward to more injuns to beat up on!. Good to have another injun on the block. Seems to be the one thing we can beat. We’ll look forward to ambushing more Indians than just Seminoles now! But I have a question if you hired an minority cause he is 1/16 indian, does that mean you 15/16ths hired a white guy? But lets talk about what UNX did hire. A 100% coach that has been fired for being a loser! He smoking the loser pipe! ha!

“Crosses still get burnt in people’s front yards in Durham.”

Not, however, by white people – or so I believe.

    ^ Maybe so, Maybe not…

Still, it’s a level I don’t feel comfortable dropping to. Let’s just call him a douche bag and leave the lynching stuff out of the conversation. Agreed?

  12. BobLee 11/29/2006 at 10:02 AM #

    Whatever …..

On a related note. I notice the N&O has revived the Gary Blackwell animated cartoon on Chuck. They are featuring it again on their Sports web page. I think you guys have a legit gripe there too.

I understood the N&O’s position on that was “we take shots at everybody” … yet there was no similar shot at John this year and he certainly was an easy target. Now to revive this after Chuck is fired …. ??????

I could see a “double shot” piece on Chuck & John but to just pound Chuck AGAIN … ????

What’s that saying … “just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean someone ISN’T out to get you.”

” I think a bunch of ya should go down to the N&O and lynch the sumbtch.”

    Yeah thats real funny.

Saunders does try and stir things up. A lot of the times he’s way off target. Other times, people need stirring up. It is funny to see how when a white columnist is ‘folksy’ and shit that cool, but let a black columnist write in the manner that he talks when he’s with his boys and you start hearing shit like ‘shuck and jive’.

By the way, I agree that its ridiculous for him to criticize State for not interviewing a minority and then not comment when y’all end up hiring a black man.

  14. PackBacker001 11/29/2006 at 12:09 PM #

All I know is that if the media gets a hold of this thread (in particular that comment) it will put a bad spotlight on SFN and NC State in general. And we all know what school the people in the media went to. Well, at least it was a Carolina fan who wrote it.

  15. BobLee 11/29/2006 at 12:23 PM #

Dog gone it … how come it always ends up being about “what BobLee said …” … 🙁

If there was an edit function here I would go in and delete the “… go lynch him …” line. A number of SFN readers are familiar with my style and I was writing to them … which was obviously a mistake. For which an apology is due … but NO ONE EVER apologizes on a message board. ….. Oh well. I have over 1,000 columns on my website. I’ll let that archive define me.

When a “performer” chooses an “over-the-top” persona be it “Larry The Cable Guy” or Barry Saunders he opens himself up to criticism … both from the stereotype he represents and the societal segment he chooses as his adversary. …. I have 1,000 columns, so does Barry. Research his archives and see who he “goes after” time and again.

That he does so in his persona as “cool black dude” probably doesn’t do much to bridge the “lets all get along” gap between “the whiteys” and “the cool black dudes”. ….. or maybe bridging that gap is not his intent … maybe “just p*ssing them off” is his sole objective? Ask Barry.

Again … if the SFN guys can delete that “lynch him” line then please do so. I want EVERYBODY to like me and criticism makes me sad.

I do agree with one point Saunders made: if you have public figures you can identify with, you will might be more willing to try and do what those folks are doing.

  18. redfred2 11/29/2006 at 3:27 PM #

Gene, not to veer or show my age…

But there you go, listen to some of the richest, and getting richer by the second, famous rapper’s and their lyrics. There’s Mr Saunder’s openly promoted public figure being presented right now for everyone to see. To kids of all colors.

Saunders looking right at home at a hoity toity meetings to introduce Butch Davis as the new coach of UNC, seems like if he wanted to effect real change, instead of just spouting off about it, maybe ma man is hangin’ with da wrong crowd.

But there you go, listen to some of the richest, and getting richer by the second, famous rapper’s and their lyrics.

Well I guess I’m showing my age, but most of the rappers I paid attention to stopped rapping years ago.

Mr Saunder’s openly promoted public figure being presented right now for everyone to see.

Yup. Sure is. Maybe there’s a kid wearing a hat at a jaunty angle, who’s thinking, “man if he can do it, and get published, so can I!”

Saunders is paid to stir things up and attract attention. He does that part of his job well, though I rarely agree with what he writes.

  20. GAWolf 12/01/2006 at 9:22 AM #

Y’all should read Slander’s piece today, Nov 31st. I actually agree with it…

  21. GAWolf 12/01/2006 at 9:24 AM #

Wait… I don’t agree so much with “Kramer” not having the right to return the favor at those who were clearly being assholes and berating him and interupting his show… but I do agree with Slander’s position calling out Jesse Jackson for what he is. Though he called him something he is not… a Reverand.

  22. redfred2 12/01/2006 at 9:42 PM #

    Gene,

Do you honestly believe that a Barry Saunders is out there creating opportunities for others?

    Not hardly.

He is cubby holing his own by making it appear that the only way is to go it alone, and the only to succeed is to work your hardest at dragging others down. That hasn’t ever worked for anyone, doesn’t work now, and it never will work.

Saunders is in a position to show that a honorable man, is any man, no matter the color of his skin. He’s just not yet there personally. All he has to write about is the big chip on his shoulder. He is NOT setting a good example by being antagonistic and still using skin color as either his favorite target, or as his favorite weapon of choice.

Like someone said earlier, he is Archie Bunker. He’s a generation behind, and the world has moved on irregardless of people like him. Not Barry Saunders, or anyone, is ever going to make anything any easier, or create opportunities for the next generation, by continually wielding that same old tired antagonistic, and totally divisive, vestige from the past.

He’s accomplishing just the opposite, of what time is trying to take care of on it’s own.
