More on the ESPN2 / Jimmy Dykes Bull*#&^ (Updated 3pm)

Before you read any further, you need to click on this entry that lays the groundwork for comments made here.

“Costner, who is 6’9 can shoot threes because he was recruited into Herb Sendek’s system.”

* ESPN color analyst, Jimmy Dykes commenting on the secret source of Brandon Costner’s abilities with approximately four minutes to go in the first half of NC State’s 74-67 win over Michigan on Monday night.

Now…we don’t really think that Jimmy Dykes truly believes that Brandon Costner can shoot well from the outside simply because the John Woodenesque Herb Sendek blessed Costner with recruitment. But, we do think that this quote crystalizes the central focus of where Dykes brain was all night while he called the Wolfpack’s big win over the Wolverines.

It was incessant. It was insulting. And it was ill-timed. And we deserve an apology.

Take for example the extremely ill-timed and inappropriate comments Dykes made with 3.3 seconds to go in the game and Sidney Lowe’s NC State Wolfpack celebrating its pending victory over Michigan. Again, the focus during this obvious time of celebration is on Herb f*ing Sendek and a criticism of NC State fans:

Well, they’ve got one of their own on the sidelines. That’s what these fans have wanted for years. Herb Sendek did nothing but win ballgames here but this fanbase was never happy with him. So he kind of rode that momentum out of town and they brought in Sidney Lowe.

What an appropriate time for such a tirade, don’t you think? Were the previous two hours of bashing not enough time for Dykes to get his uneducated and irrelevant opinion across?

It isn’t that we are just making a mountain out of a mole-hill. Dykes d&*# sucking of Sendek and criticism of NC State fans ran rampant all night in ESPN’s telecast. It was so obvious to everyone that watched the game that News & Observer even commented on the Sykes lunacy; SFN blogged it during the live broadcast; and hundreds of NC State fans made reference to the comments during the broadcast on various Wolfpack-centric websites. For example, look at the first comments from our friend at Section Six:

Does anyone have an estimate on the size of the stick that was up Jimmy Dykes’ ass tonight? I love how these national media guys have been all over us since Sendek left, even though they neither care enough nor are close enough to the situation to have even an inkling of what’s actually occurred. “In my opinion, they’re hard on their personnel here.” Oh, really, Jimmy? You’ve been in Raleigh for two days, but hey, staying at the Marriot sure puts you right on top things! This went beyond Herb Sendek. He was slamming us for firing Chuck Amato because Amato is an alumnus. Nevermind that we just finished a 3-9 season. I bet Dykes hasn’t seen more than three quarters of Wolfpack football over the last three seasons. He has no idea what we’ve dealt with.

If ESPN wants to talk so damn much about Herb Sendek then go televise and Arizona State game. That will do wonders for the ratings because the world is obviously in love with this guy. If not, shut the hell up and focus on the incredible job that Sidney Lowe is doing in Raleigh and move on!!

If you want to make your voice heard to ESPN, then we suggest that you click here and leave them some feedback on the broadcast.

We also suggest that you email Athletics Director, Lee Fowler and Sports Information Director Annabelle Vaughn Myers.

“Coach Fowler” has never been shy about taking it upon himself to call the media and voice his thoughts. We know for a fact that during Fowler’s first year on the job he called some newspaper reporters throughout the country to criticize them for running comments that Herb Sendek was on the hotseat in Raleigh. Heck, just a couple of months ago Fowler reprised his role (he must not have been very busy) and called ESPN’s Mark May to tell May that he was incorrect in his references that Chuck Amato was on the hotseat in Raleigh. (How did that brilliant move work out?).

Since Fowler has such a penchant to call the media to criticize them for criticizing “his” coaches…perhaps he can finally find the time to call the media to stand up for NC State fans!?

Wait a second…considering that the past five years of Fowler’s public criticism and name calling of the NC State fanbase planted the seeds and served to support the media’s criticism of our fans perhaps we should turn to a different spokesperson on the matter.

Postscript:
At least ONE of ESPN’s outlet’s decided to focus on the real stories of Monday night. If you have ESPN INsider then you can read Andy Katz’s comments by clicking here. SFN saw Katz walking around the RBC at halftime on Monday night. Just to wet your whistle:

But nothing Michigan did matched the hustle and intensity of NC State. For those who weren’t sure how Lowe would coach, you should know this: His players absolutely love him and would run through a brick wall for him.

Wow, Nappywolf, that’s pretty revealing! Wonder if the guy can coach the Princeton offense. The last time I remember State getting beat by an Ivy League school was when they played Princeton(with Bill Bradley) in the Eastern Regionals in 65.

I regret not seeing the game last night, but I may have kicked the screen in on the TV.

I sent an email today to ESPN, but don’t expect to hear anything. You cannot trust any media type! Doesn’t matter whether it’s politics or sports, they are just out to sell paper!

  2. redfred2 11/28/2006 at 8:36 PM #

Well, I guess the word “shady” may replace one of the more popular words that was formerly used to describe coaches right here on SFN.

  3. redfred2 11/28/2006 at 8:59 PM #

Seriously though, I’m not saying it’s wrong, or right, but it is within the rules. But can anyone imagine that. Our old straight laced Herbert Sendek even considering something like that??? I didn’t think he had it in him, and it further confirms my feelings that the folks in Raleigh absolutely strangle the life out of all of their employees. Herb’s like a berated child, out on his own for the first time, he going to push the envelope and find the maximum allowable limits, on his own, from here on out.

I’m not condoning hires dishing out hires for the serivices of amateur athletes, but good for you Herbert, you do have a set, after all.

i knew that herbert could be underhanded if he really tried….maybe he’ll get some attention now—the wrong kind. At least it won’t be at NCSU!

I couldn’t stand not sending feeback to ESPN. This guy had me shouting at the TV during the game: FWIW

I know a lot of feeback concerning a commentator’s dialogue, or manifesto in this case, usually spells “bonus” at the end of the year. However, Dykes commentary during the Michigan vs NC State game focused entirely on an ex coach and his supposedly stellar winning percentage, instead of the brilliant job Coach Lowe did to pull off a win with four scholarship players and a walk on.Can Mr. Dykes actually create commentary instead of reading a script about State’s horrible fans and estranged coach?

  7. Chief93 11/29/2006 at 12:31 AM #

Sure it was a little much, but–in stark contrast to a Dicky V commentary–at least it was somehow related to the teams actually on the floor in front of him. But ultimately who cares? We can sure dish it out, but we can’t take it.

  8. GrandWolf 11/29/2006 at 5:58 AM #

Dykes mentioned Herb quite a few times. In fact, it seemed almost on-going for two hours. On this particular Monday night, Dykes was a moron when it comes to broadcasting. This is ESPN’s fault for putting someone obviously not qualified into a position where they person is announcing and broadcasting for public consumption.

While I know this is trite and often overused, it does seem applicable these days. And that is “good help is just hard to find”.

ESPN obviously didn’t send the A team to Raleigh. Hell, they didn’t send the B or C team.

  9. Woof Wolf 11/29/2006 at 7:07 AM #

Didn’t Herb hire Archie Miller’s brother?

Chief93 — I’d have to agree with your Dicky V comment. I remember back when I was in school, my roommate and I writing an email to ESPN about how Dicky did nothing but talk about UNX during a NC State vs. GT game. However, I was pissed off to no end with Dykes and his asinine comments, especially when he was dogging our fan base for running out Herb and Chuck and then brought up Yow. Not only does he owe every State fan an apology, but he also owes one to Kay. God bless you Kay.

It simply boils down to the fact that there was a great basketball game and a great story unfolding right in front of these guys. One that involved the kids and coaches on the court, that they knew absolutely nothing about.

Jimmy Dyke’s pre-game notes research: Herb’s gone, bad fans fault, just fill in with the usual crapola that everyone is use to hearing.

Dyke’s only prepared for one scenario, that was for NC State to get blown away. He couldn’t veer from the script and the ballgame didn’t even matter. Both announcer’s commentary tarnished what could have been an inspirational storyline for ESPN, and the reporting of the event has been handled likewise since then.

    Sent in my complaint.

  13. jwrenn29 11/29/2006 at 8:05 AM #

Here’s what I said (it’s all the room they allowed):

“I (and several others that I’m in contact with) am VERY disappointed by Jimmy Dykes’ constant complaining about NCSU’s former coach, Herb Sendek, having been ‘run out of town’ after he “…did nothing but win ballgames here….” While Mr. Dykes is entitled to his opinion it is insulting to constantly berate Lowe’s program. I think Dykes should apologize for complaining rather than commentating on the game.

On a positive note, Andy Katz DID notice the positives and gave compliments to Sidney L.”

  14. Champs 11/29/2006 at 10:52 AM #

    I dropped them a line:

I just want to express my displeasure with one Jimmy Dykes since I had to listen to 2 hours of him expressing his displeasure with me Monday night while I tried to enjoy an exciting win by the Wolfpack over the Wolverines.

Instead all I got was a steady dose of how awful Wolfpack fans are for letting a coach with 10 years tenure leave on his own free will for a higher salary at another school. Could you get someone who wants to call the game and doesn’t have an axe to grind please?

  15. Gene 11/29/2006 at 12:33 PM #

Didn’t Herb hire Archie Miller’s brother?

Yes, Herb hired Archie’s bro. Sean, who is now the head coach at Xavier.

The national media types and fourth rate hacks like Dykes have NEVER understood why Sendek wasn’t beloved by the NC State fan base. You know why? Because they are too lazy to either (a): do some research and see that actually Sendek didn’t “just win ball games”, or (b) actually talk to local media that have covered ACC basketball for a long time to try to understand it. Yet folks like Dykes, and others, continue to spout off clueless opinions about the fans here “running Sendek out of town”. I’d like to be run out of town for $1 million per….

We didn’t get killed by folks that have covered ACC basketball (esp in the print media) as a career. We do get killed by morons like Dykes, Katz, Doyel, Gminski, DeCourcy..and others that haven’t taken the time to try to find out the real reasons WHY the fan base never embraced Herb Sendek.

The local media got it. The national guys didn’t. You know what? Sidney Lowe is going to change everyone’s opinion of the entire process. I’m convinced of that. At least Alabama football fans have replaced NC State basketball fans as “worst fan base in the world”. They actually deserve that moniker though…

I actually got a reply to my email to ESPN objecting to the coverage of the game. A reply with no subject, no reference to my email other than the following:

Thanks for the email. George appreciates the feedback.

    Scott Goldstein

    Assistant to the ESPN Ombudsman

Apparently generated by a bot. About what I expected.
