The News & Observer is reporting that a public statement regarding the future of N.C. State football coach Chuck Amato’s will be announced tonight, but at this point there is little reason to wait.

The NC State Football team was called for a team meeting tonight at 9pm at the Murphy Center to be officially told the news that at this point is merely a formality.

The News & Observer, ESPN, and other local media sources are all reporting the unsurprising news that Chuck Amato will not return as head coach of NC State’s football program in 2007.

SFN has already shared a detailed commentary regarding the situation that is linked here. We will have much more in the coming days.

Release: 11/26/2006

NC State Director of Athletics Lee Fowler has announced that head football Chuck Amato will not be retained for next season.

Amato, who has posted a 49-37 overall record and 25-31 mark in the ACC during his seven years as head coach, finished this season with a 3-9 mark and failed to qualify for postseason play for the second time in three years.

“No Wolfpack fan can question the excitement and enthusiasm that Chuck Amato brought to the NC State football program when he came here in 2000,” said Fowler. “His dreams have become our dreams and that has translated itself into our great new facilities, record ticket sales and five bowl appearances in seven years.

“However, because the results on the field in two of the last three seasons have fallen far below where we feel our program should be at this point, we have decided to take the program in a new direction.”

NC State qualified for a postseason bowl each of Amato’s first four years at NC State, earning victory in three of those contests. However, the Wolfpack finished with losing records in 2004 and 2006.

Amato had three years remaining on his contract.

“Chuck Amato has been a part of Wolfpack football for more than four decades and as a head coach has raised our expectations and goals,” said Chancellor James L. Oblinger. “We appreciate everything that Chuck has done for the program and our student-athletes. We wish him all the best in the future; he will always be a member of the Wolfpack family.”

Fowler added that the search to find Amato’s replacement will begin immediately.

“Our search will be national in scope and we will begin the process through a search firm very quickly. I ask that all Wolfpackers join together in supporting our student-athletes and staying behind our program.”

From Fanblogs.com – “One of the guys sure to get attention at NC State, Miami, Arizona State, or several others schools that will soon have coaching vacancies is South Florida Head Coach Jim Leavitt.” — Someone’s going to pick this guy up, might it be State?

Paul Johnson at Navy is from North Carolina and a Western Carolina grad so he has roots in North Carolina and might not use us as a springboard. Great coach. Wins where ever he goes.

“Johnson took over a program that had posted a 1-20 record the previous two years before his arrival in 2002. After a 2-10 mark in his first year, the Navy football program has achieved what many thought was no longer possible at an Academy, as Johnson has brought the Midshipmen back in to the national spotlight with a 26-11 (.703) record over the last three years. The Mids’ 26 wins over that time span equals the most in school history over a three-year period.

    SNIP

“Johnson took over a Georgia Southern program in 1997 that was 4-7 the previous year and orchestrated a turnaround which ranks among the NCAA’s best ever, directing the Eagles to a 10-3 record, equaling the school’s best mark since 1989. His peers and media members justly rewarded his rebuilding efforts as he earned Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors while also picking up national tributes from the American Football Coaches Association and American Football Quarterly.”

“In 1998, Johnson guided the Eagles to a perfect 11-0 regular-season record and the school’s sixth NCAA Division I-AA National Championship Game appearance before finishing with a 14-1 mark. He directed a high-powered offensive unit which tied or broke 100 records during the campaign, and again earned the league’s top coaching honor and received national praise as the recipient of The Sports Network’s Eddie Robinson Award — symbolic of the division’s national coach-of-the-year selection. ”

“In 1999, Johnson brought Georgia Southern back to the national championship game and this time it won it, as the Eagles finished 13-2, broke 197 records and won the school’s fifth national title. For his efforts, Johnson was honored as the 1999 American Football Coaches Association and Chevrolet I-AA National Coach of the Year. ”

“The Eagles came back in 2000 and won their second-straight national championship, posting a 13-2 record. Johnson was named the American Football Coaches Association I-AA Coach of the Year. ”

What’s comforting is that there seem to be quite a few high-quality names out there with ties to the school or the area. I had a bad feeling about the coaching search. I have a good feeling about this one.

Though we all know what happens when we get good feelings regarding our sports programs…

  5. wayofthemaster 11/27/2006 at 5:33 AM #

I’m not advocating any of these guys… It’s just fun to throw names out there for discussion… some intriguing names to consider.

Paul Chryst – Offensive Coordinator (Wisconsin)

    http://wisconsin.scout.com/2/351212.html

    From a Wisconsin fan blog…

Folks, enjoy Paul Chryst while we can. I predict he will be in great demand for a head coaching job.

Gene Chizik – Assistant Head Coach / DC (Texas)

    http://www.mackbrown-texasfootball.com/index.php?s=&url_channel_id=32&url_subchannel_id=&url_article_id=601&change_well_id=2

Mitch Browning – Assistant Head Coach / OC (Minnesota)

    From the Sporting News…

Minnesota offensive coordinator Mitch Browning, one of the best in the biz. He’s a sage veteran who’s more than ready for the next step. And his credentials are without peer, as he has helped build programs at Kansas and Minnesota, which is no easy task.

Charlie Strong – Assistant Head Coach/Co-DC (Florida)

Lane Kiffin – OC / Recruiting Coordinator (USC)

I really don’t want any assistants. If there’s something we’ve seen over and over again in just the Triangle, it’s that assistants frequently lack the leadership quotient. It’s my biggest concern with Norm Chow even.

  7. Buck 11/27/2006 at 7:54 AM #

Even if we are using Neinas, don’t expect this search to be as quick as the Butch Davis hire…that was in the cards from before the git go. Unless there has been someone expressing more than just “interest” ahead of time, this could take a bit longer. Assuming Cowher is a pipe dream my preferences are for just two possibles: Chow or Paul Johnson. If Chow’s interests lie elsewhere (ASU?) it would be a serious mistake not to hire Johnson. Chuck made a serious mistake letting Buddy Green go…Green left on public good terms (Good for Buddy to not speak ill of Chuck or NCSU) but i’m sure that Chuck did not see eye to eye with Buddy (one of Chuck’s worst coaching turnover losses). Johnson was smart to hire Green after that and I think it would be great to get Green back here with Johnson as he knows the recruiting in this area.

  8. Mr O 11/27/2006 at 7:58 AM #

Buddy had no choice but to leave NC State due to personal reasons. Not sure if B. Green would come back here.

  9. choppack1 11/27/2006 at 8:15 AM #

“Jerry Moore (App. State) who has proven that he can coach and recruit at a small school with success.”

Seriously, look at Moore’s record at Texas Tech before championing him for the NC State job.

  10. packpigskinfan23 11/27/2006 at 8:26 AM #

well we all know ASU is going to go after Chow… if we want him we need to go strong. I keep hearing that he dosnt really like recruiting? Has he ever actully said that, or is that just common knowledge?

also, is there an offical link that shows we are using Neinas or some other consultant?! I havent found anything yet… but I cant ever find any new anywhere besides this site and GoPack.

  11. packpigskinfan23 11/27/2006 at 8:29 AM #

    “a search firm”

well that comforting… I just hope Fowler has nothing to do with it, other then putting his signature on the paperwork.

  12. buttPACKer 11/27/2006 at 8:30 AM #

fowler stated at the pc the search will begin immediately with a search firm.

  13. packpigskinfan23 11/27/2006 at 8:40 AM #

was the pc televised? or can I get the notes from it somewhere?

  14. GoldenChain 11/27/2006 at 8:47 AM #

Hey STN, didn’t want this to escape your watch.
As reported in the Daily Tarhole Southern Edition (aka Charlotte Observer):

“Fowler said the search for a replacement would begin immediately and said N.C. State would use a search firm.”

Maybe Jed learned something in the last 6 months.

  15. buttPACKer 11/27/2006 at 8:47 AM #

a good place to look is Youtube.com. . . if it was televised it has likely been posted there by someone.

  16. DIXIE Wolf 11/27/2006 at 9:16 AM #

I believe that using a search firm means that getting Cowher is VERY UNLIKELY….

  17. wolfpacker55 11/27/2006 at 9:17 AM #

If you are an Athletic Director and you don’t have a hand in the HIRING PROCESS…. what good are you as an employee. Fowler, its time to move on and quit embarrassing yourself, family name, and NCSU!! You are not talented and never will be. Somebody do a service to the university and fire this ass!

  18. packpigskinfan23 11/27/2006 at 9:29 AM #

you dont think the firm would be smart enough to at least talk to Cowher?

  19. c6by66 11/27/2006 at 9:33 AM #

Sounds like the Thanksgiving turkey leftovers are causing a lot of heartburn in the head coaching community….

Alabama axes Shula…now here’s a big surprise…if the blogger is right and Spurrier has been talking to them behind the scenes, then SC had better start printing some big $$’s….

Here is the link to the story….

    http://www.wral.com/apsportsnews/10403129/detail.html

Did I read that Shula’s base is over $650K….

I hope all the BIG $$ WPC donors enjoy writing checks to find a coach that does not wear red shoes and garish sunglasses…

I did NOT know that we had a dress code as one of the pre-requisites for the HC at NCSU. If you read WRAL’s blogs, CTC broke the “Code”…funny thing…the way he was dressed and acting when we beat ND seems OK to ALL the NCSU faithful…

There are a LOT of schools, with big $$ budgets, hunting for HC’s…I hope that FUF and the WPC and NCSU have a REAL plan this time….

It is OBVIOUS from the blogs that we, the SFN bloggers, can’t agree on names, background, style, etc…..

WRAL’s Gravely and Holliday BLOGs are interesting….If you yell too loud at your assistants, you can’t be a great HC….PLEASE…someone call DOOK and UNX….they need to know that…I thought Roy W. would have a coronary during the second half of the TN game…I hope Roy was taking his BP meds…then there’s old “Salty” Mike…who’s X-rated practices are not suitable for family viewing…

The bloggers can talk all they want about the plans for the Vaughn Tower and the Murphy Center being drawn up LONG before CTC came to Raleigh…but it was his marketing (STYLE) and Bobby Purcell (WPC) that finally made that a reality…

We owe a lot to CTC…I’m sure that the Seniors who he greeted Saturday night did NOT vote for change…If I were CTC, I would take the WPC FUNDED BIG$$ Severance package and take off a year or so…Ride around in my ‘Vette and enjoy my grandchild….maybe do a gig as a talking head….Lou Holtz ain’t doing too bad….

So, Chuck, follow Jimmy V’s advice….give yourself a time of mourning and reflection…maybe a year or so….Enjoy your family…get involved in a local civic organization. You have the knack and talent for it…hug your grandchild…my 4 year old grandson loves to ride in my RED ‘Vette….

    Thanks for the memories….

JIMMY V….HELP….we need another ’83 miracle to get a DECENT coach….

    GO PACK….

There was no press conference. Just a press release sent out.

  21. choppack1 11/27/2006 at 10:04 AM #

“I believe that using a search firm means that getting Cowher is VERY UNLIKELY….”

I wouldn’t read that into it at this time. This is probably being done to avoid the repeat that was the disaster of the b’ball coaching search. The consultants have a job of keeping things out of the press – allowing discussions to go on between the parties w/out plane tracking, leaks, etc.

As much as anything, this consultant was hired so that we don’t alienate potential candidates – as we may have done w/ the b’ball coaching search – and so that the Lee doesn’t have too much control over anything.

  22. redfred2 11/27/2006 at 10:09 AM #

I’m sure the administration is sick over losing Chuck Amato. The man did exactly what they stressed and accomplished every one of their goals FOR THEM. He raised MONEY…$$$…MONEY. Same with Herb, all they wanted from him was to keep it clean and not embarrass anyone. Both of those guys did exactly what the folks in Raleigh had emphasized as the most important aspects of their jobs. They both followed their boss’s orders until winning became the secondary focus.

Lee got fat with Amato around and he knows exactly what he has lost. It will be be very interesting to see how the $$$ flows into Raleigh when it’s just the face of Lee Fowler representing those interest once again.

Chuck got it started and built it up. Now NCSU needs find someone to pick it up and sustain it, and quickly.

  23. tooyoungtoremember 11/27/2006 at 10:19 AM #

Now that a search firm is being used, it sounds like SFN is going to have to work even harder to bring us the scoop and all the inside info!

  24. justaguy 11/27/2006 at 10:23 AM #

Maybe using a search firm means Fowler is on the way out too. That would be a good way to insulate the process of finding a new head coach if the AD is to be dismissed. Anybody with an ear to the ground on this?
