More Lowe (or is it “Lower”?)

SFN has been on fire the last couple of days so I encourage you to please spend some time surfing through the recent entries on the blog.

When I worked on this piece with some of the other authors yesterday I couldn’t get over my joy of reading what Andy Katz wrote in his INsider entry on ESPN. He gave more compliments to Coach Lowe than just the teaser that SFN ran:

But nothing Michigan did matched the hustle and intensity of NC State. For those who weren’t sure how Lowe would coach, you should know this: His players absolutely love him and would run through a brick wall for him.

In fact, (other than Jimmy Dykes) it seems that most of the media is jumping on the Sidney Lowe bandwagon quicker than we can find all of their recent quotes and criticism of NC State’s program and hiring of Lowe.

I was listening to Mark Packer’s show in Charlotte yesterday and was very pleased to hear the compliments that he was laying on Lowe on NC State. Packer also astutely mentioned some of Lowe’s early recruiting success that seemed to slip the mind of ESPN’s crew the other night. (I almost get the feeling that Packer has been pulling for State to become relevant again for years. I hope that we can oblige in the next couple of years)

Most interestingly, Packer noticed what everyone in the RBC knew (and many were verbalizing) – Wolfpackers looked and sounded like they were having a BLAST!!! and that he hasn’t seen this kind of excitement in a long time.

He couldn’t be more correct. I haven’t spoken with a friend or fan who hasn’t made some kind of comment about how much ‘fun’ they have watching this team. I met a friend for a beer after the game on Monday night and the first thing that he innocently said was, “That was a lot of fun tonight!” Gee. Fun. How dare us all want to enjoy ourselves for the thousands of dollars we shell out in lifetime rights, Wolfpack Club dues, and season tickets!!!

Check out some of the other finds today:

* Whomever Ken Medlin is…he says that he is Sold on Sidney Lowe.

If I’d told any of you that Engin Atsur would miss nearly the entire game against Michigan, and the Pack would still win… would you have believed it? Lowe has his team motivated. They believe in the “team concept,” but they don’t believe their team depth is too thin. Beating a quality team — without Atsur — is proof positive.

And how about Lowe’s in-game coaching? He’s animated. He’s intense. And his first-half timeouts — which are becoming a game-by-game event — always seem to spark his team at the right time.

* From 850TheBuzz, “you’ve got to give Sidney Lowe and company high marks for their first significant test of the season.”

A little more
I saw a quote on an NC State message board that was related to this very topic on which I wanted to take the opportunity to comment.

Most of the annoying media comments are the result of talking points generated by the herd mentality of lazy sportswriters who aren’t even particularly interested in NC State

I don’t disagree with the comments. But, I have to sincerely ask – who is responsible for leading the media herd to their conclusions and sparking all of this criticism in recent years? As we know…it isn’t like the media can really think for themselves. If they could there would be no jobs for public relations professionals and ‘Spin Doctors”.

If Lee Fowler wouldn’t have spent his last five years launching a one-man crusade to prove to the world that Herb Sendek was the best basketball coach since John Wooden (and therefore Fowler made a wonderful decision by keeping Sendek after the dreadful 5th year) then perhaps the media wouldn’t have many of these thoughts or feel so entitled to say be so negative about NC State.

Arizona State just fired a football coach who has gone to 3 or 4 consecutive bowls (including this year). You can run down a list of hundreds of football and basketball coaches who get removed after generating SIGNIFICANTLY more success than NC State’s coaches. Do you think that you are going to see and hear hundreds of criticisms of all of these programs for months to come?

Of course not!! ecause other Athletics Directors don’t spend half a decade publicly degrading large portions of their fan base with labels like “crazy” and “lunatic fringe”.

Other ADs issue statements (and TRULY BELIEVE) like this classic statement from Nebraska and or like this one from Arizona State’s AD earlier this week:

“The next person that I will be hiring won’t be shy about this,” Love said. “They’ll clearly understand the goals. The winner of the Pac-10 Conference plays in the Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowl is the goal for Sun Devil football. No one should approach me about this job if they don’t understand that and they don’t understand what’s going on at Arizona State University, because it’s pretty powerful stuff.”

I like the idea of a campaign to get Brackman back. I know he must be salivating to get back out on that floor, given what’s happened thus far. If he wouldn’t have injured his hip last year, I bet he would be back. If the Pack keeps the level of excitement up, he may not be able to resist. I hope Sid keeps working on him. I know the chances are not great, but it doesn’t hurt to dream.

The gist of that cut off post was…that no matter what anyone says, wins and losses aside, Sidney Lowe is giving something back to NC State University right now, that no other coach on the planet has the ability to do. That being NC STATE BASKETBALL, and more importantly NC STATE UNIVERSITY itself. By playing a game, on a hardwood court, and in a manner which is time tested and easily proven by the banners hanging in the rafters, he is restoring pride and the self esteem of one the best basketball programs in the country. And, in doing so he will also be instilling those same qualities back into the mindsets of everyone involved with the university as a whole.

If anyone there is anyone out there who still can’t see that, then they need to move on. Sidney Lowe inherited a rag tag pile of crap from Lee Fowler and everyone knows who. He is following in some heavily sh*t laden boot steps that are not of his own making. Sh*t laden boot steps that were created by everyone know who.

It was irrelevant from the start, but the comparison period has now ended.

You’re right. I jumped. I’m a little moody and touchy about the situation right now. Maybe I need some of my wife’s pamprin, or midol, whatever it is that definitely doesn’t work for her.

Packgirl–I think the reality is that there is as good a chance of one of us here suiting up for the Pack this year, as their is of Drew coming back.

IMO, he is 100% committed to baseball.

  5. Clarksa 11/29/2006 at 2:25 PM #

    ^as he should be.

    Laddie

We can run off numberous grown men with just the sounds of our voices.

Surely we can create a ground swell large enough to change one young kid’s mind.

  7. ncwolfie2000 11/29/2006 at 2:37 PM #

Chances of Brackman coming back are between 0% and .01%. He will be drafted higher in the MLB than he will in the NBA so baseball is rightfully his focus. Being a student-athlete takes up enough time. Can you imagine being a dual-sport student-athlete?

  8. PackGirl 11/29/2006 at 2:39 PM #

I wonder if he misses Skyline chili. I have the recipe and could make him a batch. Might take more than that I guess.

If everything had been progressing as it should have on the basketball court, and Brackman had been ALLOWED to play up to the potential that earned him a (((BASKETBALL))) scholarship, what you are saying would be insane.

Look at Ben McCauley right now, for crying out loud.

Leave the poor guy alone were lucky we had him at all

All I am saying is that it was just sitting in the stands at the RBC then, versus now. There is a real reason to play now, it’s not just going through the motions anymore. And there is reason to put on a WOLFPACK uniform and play for NC STATE once again. It’s an opportunity that he will not have again, I know he’d love it, and it’s unfortunate that his talent and interest were not enhanced before.

Will miss him, but he is also missing out on a great opportunity to endear himself to NC STATE and WOLFPACKERS for the rest of his days. Along with just having fun and enjoying the game of basketball again.

    ^just “like” sitting

You never know – this could be a year that goes down in Wolfpack BB history. He may want to be a part of that. Come back Brack!

    Brackman quotes from October 2006:
“It is such a hard decision to make that I kind of held on to it as long as I could,” said Brackman

“It’s a whole new ball game and a whole new staff,” Brackman said. “I loved Coach Sendek and I loved playing for him. But if he would have been here, I would have made the same decision earlier. With the new staff coming in, I wasn’t sure what this year would be like for basketball. The thing that kept getting stuck in my mind was, ‘Hey, what if I did play. It might be different this year.’ That made me think about playing basketball again.”

Brackman admits its going to kill him to watch his basketball teammates play without him. He plans to be at every game he can when the season starts. “It will definitely be hard to sit there and watch and not be able to go out and help, when I know I could help the team and compete,” Brackman said.

I wasn’t sure what this year would be like for basketball. The thing that kept getting stuck in my mind was, ‘Hey, what if I did play. It might be different this year.’

Oh well, that statement has already been answered.

  15. redfred2 11/29/2006 at 3:33 PM #

YOU ARE YOUNG ANDREW BRACKMAN, THIS IS A ONCE LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE!!!

JUMP ON IT AND RIDE IT HARD!!!

  16. Rochester 11/29/2006 at 3:42 PM #

As much as we want the guy to play, it’s selfish on our part to beat him over the head with our requests. Sure, it would be nice if he did play, but in this world we are all responsible for our own actions and decisions. He obviously thought a long time about this one and it’s only fair to respect the decision he made. If he changes his mind after seeing how much fun the team is having, that’s up to him. Doubtful, still, though.

How would you feel if your request was the one that finally changed his mind and then he tore his ACL playing hoops and couldn’t pitch this spring, costing him a shot at millions of dollars in the baseball draft? Oops, sorry, B-Rack. Thanks for trying. Have fun in physical therapy.

  17. Pack Laddie 11/29/2006 at 3:44 PM #

    Bingo, we have a winner–

“As much as we want the guy to play, it’s selfish on our part to beat him over the head with our requests. “

    ^Rochester nailed it perfectly.

Laddie called you know what on the comment re talking to refs. Laddie used to sit near you know who’s bench and perhaps had a better vantage point than the rest of us. I would be prone to agree with the poster that Laddie called out. I do remember you know who begging refs for an answer with his palms turned up but I do not recall him getting in the face of any refs. Sidney got in one ref’s face in the Mich. game and then turned away with a grin on his face. So perhaps the poster was accurate…begging does not equal getting in one’s face.

  20. Rick 11/29/2006 at 3:56 PM #

“Sid talked longer to that Ref that HS did to ALL the Refs during his 10 year tenure.”

“total BS—that is seeing what you want to see”

I do not consider mumbling beneath your breath while doing the choke sign or screaming “why” while holding your hands in the air as “talking to the refs”.
But maybe it is just me.

  21. Pack Laddie 11/29/2006 at 3:56 PM #

legacy—do you remember the time at Maryland that Herb had already been T’d up once, and was in pursuit of Ray Natili. If Larry Harris had not tackled him, literally, he would have gotten another one, and been gone.

If you guys want to think Herb didn’t work the refs, fine. I am not going to argue about it.

  22. PackGirl 11/29/2006 at 3:58 PM #

I don’t really think Brackman’s going to do anything based on requests from this blog, so I’m not feeling too guilty. And no one really knows the long term result of his current decision. He could get hurt playing baseball as well. Or, on the other hand, under Sid’s direction he could have 2 incredible years playing BB and be drafted to the NBA.

  23. GoldenChain 11/29/2006 at 4:51 PM #

    Bottom line:
    – if a player didn’t want to play for Sid he’s better off and so is Sid and the Pack.
    – whether HS talked to th refs more than Sid is a mute point, what is relavant is how much is accomplished in those talks with the ref. If Sid can get them to call Hasbro for traveling when he does the ‘bunny hop’ then my hat’s off to him!

  24. redfred2 11/29/2006 at 4:54 PM #

    Rochester

“How would you feel if your request was the one that finally changed his mind and then he tore his ACL playing hoops and couldn’t pitch this spring, costing him a shot at millions of dollars in the baseball draft?”

Huh, let me see, no more guilty than I would for begging someone who was only fortunate to receive the god given abilitities to excel in a single sport, to risk injury and participate in that one particular sport, while wearing a Wolfpack uniform.

After your post, I’m afraid to leave the house. Andrew Brackman can do all of that in early baseball practice too, before he ever plays another game of any kind. Or get attacked by a mountain lion, or fall off of a curb, or trip down a flight of stairs.

Like I said, he is young, he has the world in front of him and probably will make more from playing baseball than I could ever imagine. But that still in no way, precludes from playing collegiate basketball.

We’re in a transition period at NC State right now, but pessimism and absolutely pessimistic outlooks still rule the day. Sorry, I forgot all about that.

  25. redfred2 11/29/2006 at 5:07 PM #

This Brackman thing is pie in the sky anyway. But I can’t believe that anyone feels they’re being so noble for saying the kid shouldn’t play a sport inwhich he excels, and the one he received a scholarship for.

Only at NC State. It is beyond me.
