Fowler Tries Not To Comment On Amato; Embarrasses Self Again (Updated 7:45)

Mr. ‘I Know Basketball’ tried not to comment on the coaching situation of Chuck Amato, but read between the lines. When IKB won’t babble on and on about how he is in your corner. You are in serious trouble.

“”I’m not going to get into any speculation about Chuck,” Fowler said.

Asked if he would end speculation about Amato’s job being in jeopardy by confirming that Amato would return in 2007, Fowler said, “I don’t want to say anything about Coach Amato at this point. We’ll look at the season when it’s over. I’m a big believer in Senior Day and I want the seniors to have the opportunity to go out with a good Senior Day, so I don’t want to get into any speculation.

“I’ve been consistent in saying we will evaluate everything at the end of the season. The season ends Saturday.”

Huh?

“I’ve been consistent in saying we will evaluate everything at the end of the season. The season ends Saturday.”

Is this a joke?

Enter this as exhibit #8,000 as evidence of ‘whatever goes on in the mind of Lee Fowler must be true despite reality and multiple exhibits of fact to the contrary.” I swear to you that Fowler truly believes that if he just says something…then it becomes the truth regardless of reality.

This is an Athletics Director who took the step to CALL ESPN’S Mark May in the middle of the football season to criticize and correct May after May had stated on the air that Chuck Amato was in trouble at NC State. (Link) As embarassing as that behavior is in its own right, I think that it is topped by Fowler’s backtracking now as he tries to posit himself as a calm, patient, introspective AD who waits until the end of the season to evaluate things. Bullshit. Fowler didn’t call Mark May and tell him that Chuck would be evaluated at the end of the season, did he?

Just two weeks ago (November 7th) the N&O ran a story titled, “Amato status ‘not an issue’ / N.C. State athletics director says coach’s job is secure despite some fans’ gripes”. We even made a big deal about Fowler’s media splash during that day in this great entry.

You tell us how consistent Fowler is in saying that State will evaluate everything at the end of the year. From the N&O:

RALEIGH – N.C. State athletics director Lee Fowler, while acknowledging the mounting frustration of a four-game losing streak, said Monday he firmly supports Wolfpack football coach Chuck Amato.

“I’m 100 percent behind Chuck,” Fowler said in an interview. “We’ve had disappointing losses; and when you lose four in a row by a touchdown or less, things come up such as, ‘If we had just done this or done that.’ I know the frustration of our fan base.

“But I’ve watched Chuck closely this year. He’s coaching just like he did when we were 11-3. He’s remaining very positive. Recruiting is going well.”

    highstick,

I just found out that my wife and kids really don’t give a damn about the real, nuts and bolts, inner workings of NCSU either. It’s good to have SFN back, along with the other people here who can ignore me also, but without me really noticing it.

redfred, just curous, isn’t your wife wringing her hands over Fowler embarrasing himself and the university again?

Nah, she’s actually pretty intelligent, moreso than you or I, she doesn’t get involved in very many lost causes.

I think my wife thinks I have an “online affair” going on! It sure is fun to be part of the “Lunatic Fringe”.

I wish I could come up with a potential favorite for a coach, but I just have a hard time getting too excited if Fowler will still be there.

Weird story, but about 4-5 years ago, I was in Raleigh for one of my wife’s aunt’s funeral. It was in the winter and started snowing on the way to the cemetery. As we were leaving the gravesite, I looked down and saw Coach Case’s grave marker and knew this had to be an omen of good things to come for the State athletic programs. Looks like we may have another hurdle or two to jump before that will happen. But, I’m thrilled, our basketball team has as many wins as our football team and the season has just started!

When it comes to the administration of athletics at NCSU nothing should be surprising. LF is not the best but I think also that part of the problem lies above him.

Happy Thanksgiving to all Wolfpackers (and even you rivals who enjoy seeing us go through our current misery). I hope all of you and your families have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Now to business. Here is my wish list to occupy the elaborate corner office in the Murphy Center. Before you condemn me, at least try and understand my wish. You can never get ANYONE without at least making contact and asking them what it would for them to relocate to Raleigh. Please keep that in mind. The worst that can happen is for them to say, “no thank you”. Also, please keep in mind that we (and MOST colleges) need an offensive minded coach. We need to move the ball north and south, and let our offensive minded head coach hire a defensive expert.

    1) Steve Spurrier (No one enjoys beating UNC more than Stevie; remember his “dig” at Mack Brown…”Heck, UNC is a great place. If I were there, I would have already won at least two national championships”)
    2) Steve Logan (This guy can coach, recruit, and keep a program in line. His offenses at ECU were outstanding. He beat Butch Davis the only two times he played him while Butch was at Miami. Logan is extremely creative and has only gotten better with his stint in NFL Europe. He is regarded as maybe the best QB coach in America. We need someone with his knowledge. He also knows the State relative to high school coaches and has contacts already established. Plus, he knows our competititon! Logan would be an excellent choice, and could take us to ACC championships and perhaps beyond.
    3) Paul Johnson (His style is similar to Jim Grobe’s. The only downside is whether his offense could work consistently on this level of play. He is a very creative coach)
    4) Norm Chow (Enough said; the “holy grail” of offensive football. The downside is his age, and his inexperience at heading a program. I think he can however.
    5) Bobby Johnson (This man is a Dick Sheridan protege, and is of the same character and demeanor. It would be like us having a younger Dick Sheridan. Johnson exudes class and integrity, and has done an outstanding job at Vanderbilt.

I think we could land one of these guys with the right approach, and in some cases, the right checkbook. Any of these guys could turn our program around and with character and class. Obviously, some have instant recognition and some don’t. I wish Lee Fowler could at least read this and consider it.

I posted some things yesterday that vanished for some reason. Some random thoughts:

Someone posted that Nick Saban is an offensive coach. I’m pretty certain he is a defensive coach by background and thus is a good example that a defensive head coach can succeed just fine in college football.

To those who think Cowher wouldn’t be a good choice because he has never coached in college, what do you think about Sidney Lowe? Same thing, except Cowher has been more visible in the NFL than Lowe was in the NBA, which should only be a positive. I’m sure if Cowher considered taking the job, he’d seek to build a staff with strong college coaching experience, just as Sidney did. I think getting Cowher is probably still wishful thinking, but not because he couldn’t be successful.

To those who think we should keep Amato on in some capacity, I think that is foolish. It is a rare situation in any business when someone can be demoted and continue to be a happy and productive team player in the same work environment. Chuck’s personality doesn’t strike me as one that would thrive in that situation.

To those who think Steve Spurrier would come here… why would he? South Carolina is a program that is roughly equal to ours, or maybe already better. It is in a better football conference. It has a very passionate fan base. He has a great contract. Seriously, what possible reason could there be for him to leave SC to come here? And if he did, why would we expect him to stay any longer at State? It doesn’t make any sense to me.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

Miami did not screw around. They dismissed Larry Coker twelve hours after his last regular season game. Whether you agree or disagree with their decision to dismiss Coker; at least they did not let it linger. I wonder if Fowler and NCSU will act likewise and make an announcement by noon on Sunday relative to Amato’s status. I hope they learned from Miami. I’m sure a reason for Miami’s quick decision is to get a jump start on several other schools who more than likely, or have been rumored, to fire coaches; i.e. Alabama, NC State, Arizona State, in addition to Michigan State who is already looking for a coach. All of this is making UNC look pretty smart at this juncture; they made a decision and have a coach in place. Let’s just hope NCSU acts swiftly!
