ECU Paid $300k to Play NC State

In a move only endorsed by people with memories of less than 20 years – or who are general morons – NC State and East Carolina have moved kickoff for the two schools’ November 25th battle to 7pm. (Link)

^This announcement and the idiotic message board banter that has already begun related to the game got us thinking a little about the Pirates and the Pack. We are going to have a lot more commentary on the Pirates and Pack in the next 11 days, but until then we wanted to share a clarifying note related to a ‘conversation’ that we saw on a message board where a Pirate fan wouldn’t/couldn’t grasp the importance

With this in mind, we ask that you turn your attention to the article from the Clarion Ledger (quoted below) that will clear up some of the confusion for the folks out there that love to run their mouth without having a single fact to support what they wish were true.

SFN hears about fiscal responsibility from the NC State Athletics Administration all of the time. Most recently we have heard from numerous people connected to the University that Chuck Amato (AND Marc Trestman’s) jobs are 100% safe because Lee Fowler and NC State’s Administration ‘cannot’/will not pay for buyouts related to their contracts. We want to make sure that emphasize that there is a big difference between “cannot” and “will not”. Unfortunately for State fans, the Department likes to present things that they “will not” do as things that “cannot” be done.

So, can anyone explain to us how East Carolina could afford to fire their football coach and basketball coach in the same year? And, how they can afford to pay THREE different football coaches (Logan, Thompson, Holtz) simultaneously while shelling out $300k just to get a road game at NC State?

ECU to Pay $300,000 to USM to play NCSU in 2006;
USM to make nearly $1M for game at Va. Tech
By Tim Doherty

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Southern Miss’ visit to Virginia Tech next season is expected to add nearly $1 million to the Golden Eagles’ budget.

“It will be the best game, financially, that we’ve ever played on the road,” USM athletic director Richard Giannini said before Tuesday’s game here against Marshall. “It’s an opportunity that financially is a great deal for us.”

Tech announced Monday evening that it had added USM to its 2006 schedule, swapping the Golden Eagles for East Carolina. Tech will pay USM more than $600,000 as a guarantee, Giannini said about the game that is set for Sept. 16, 2006, in Blacksburg, Va.

East Carolina will pay USM an additional $300,000-plus for taking the game off the Pirates’ schedule. “It’s more (than $900,000), close to a million,” Giannini said.

The Pirates and Hokies had been scheduled to start a nine-year series next fall, but ECU had the opportunity to revive an intrastate rivalry with North Carolina State. The catch: ECU had to start the N.C. State series in 2006.

Tech told the Pirates it would delay the start of their series if ECU could find an acceptable replacement.
Giannini said he turned down a return trip from the Hokies in 2014 because the one-game deal meant a bigger payday.

“We talked about it, but it was just too far down the road,” Giannini said.

USM’s 2006 non-conference schedule will feature road games at Tech and Florida and home games with Southeastern Louisiana and North Carolina State.

I love the ectc game and hope they [the team] come in breathing fire.
I want to see their A game against our A game [if we have one].
So much of our over inflated rise to mediocrity is based on meaningless ooc cupcakes [who now beat us] and are usually uninspired, and meaningless waste of time/space fillers.
If ctc can’t field a quality team that is motivated against an opponent loaded with players we wouldn’t even recruit; then I am happy that this reality is exposed for all to see.
For all those who insist it takes several decades for a coach to build a successfull program; please explain how Skippy has done well in year two in Greenville, starting with nothing.
Time to man-up and quit whining about nonsense issues.
CTC hates this game because it is likely to expose his super-man Fl. recruits against those second rate North car. kids he didn’t bother to recruit.
Amazing what effect coaching has on talent.
Either kick their butts or take our azz whoopin like a man and face reality.
Reminds me of the old Bear Bryant description, “he can take his and whip yours or he can take yours and whip his”.

I grew up in the shadows of ECU, but was always a State fan. I used to pull for them. Then they started running their mouths and they really got under my skin. They have been quiet for the last 5 or 6 years. They have not had a winning season since 2000. So they have had to sit home and watch their hated rivals go to a bowl almost every year. I hate to give up bragging rights, but I really don’t think we can win anymore this year. They will beat us and crow until we meet again. If Amato doesn’t step down after back to back loses to our #1 and #2 rivals……I just may have to quit watching college football until he is gone. Without Rivers, Chuck would have been gone long ago…..

It will be a DEEP purple stadium on November 25, and at night to make matters worse. Lee Fowler will reap what he has sown.

Heard a DJ on the Buzz say to one caller that Cignetti might have a job in Raleigh. Anyone hearing something on that?

  5. PIR8fan 11/15/2006 at 11:17 AM #

I have a state fan in the office next to me. We are great friends. We have bantered back and forth about this matchup. In the beginning of the season state was going to kick our a$$. Now that the tables may have turned…according to your fans… I also have read that the lowly ECU fans will be tearing the stadium down. I have been to several ECU games both home and away. In the last several years the only problem with tailgating will be a possible shooting at State!! We feel unsure about the security here. Are there enough armed gards there to protect our fans. We do know that yall cary guns to the games… we have read the news…

Tables turned? We ain’t surrendering the booty yet. We will see Saturday night around 11 pm Mr. Pir8. Arrrrrrr ye scurvy sea dog….

  7. Mike 11/15/2006 at 12:01 PM #

Have not heard anything about Cignetti coming from Chapel Hill. One rumor I did hear which scares the heck out of me is Logan to be OC at UNC. I would like Logan here in Raleigh.

“If Amato doesn’t step down after back to back loses to our #1 and #2 rivals…”

In Football? UNC and ECU our respective #1 and #2 rivals in the year 2006? Who would have thunk?

That is a far cry from the noise I heard a short while back. The really sad thing is that we’ll still have to be very lucky to win either of these next two games.

  9. wvillepack 11/15/2006 at 12:43 PM #

Yes redfred2…unc and ecu are our rivals, 1 and 2 in football. If not them, who? An out of state team? Wake? Duke? We want to be competive with the best in the ACC and the country. But they will always be our rivals.

    “we have read the news…”

Right, like we believe EZU fans read 😉

Can you imagine a coaching staff with Cowher at the helm with Logan at OC?

  12. PIR8fan 11/15/2006 at 3:44 PM #

You guys will have a couple of bad years… from an E C U fan… that is not necessarily a bad thing… Once you get a good coach it will work out. Good luck with the Cowher thing. I think you should start with your AD. ECU 20, NCSU 14…ARRGGGGGG!!!!

  13. wvillepack 11/15/2006 at 4:00 PM #

What I like about Logan when he was at ECU was….he tried to score every time he had the ball. He really never had the luxury of a good defense to fall back on. How many fake field goals/punts did he pull in his time at ECU??? A bunch. I have seen him score a first quarter touchdown and then go for the onesides kick. I know conventional football thinking says run the ball in the fourth quarter when you have a lead. But when you only have 30 rushing yards does it make sense??? Heck no. And Logan believes that. He loves to score points. He is also really good at taking quarterbacks under his wing and grooming/teaching/coaching them. Cowher would kick butt and Logan could score points.

^^^Can you imagine how much WPC dues would be to support those two?

There’s not enough ad dollars to cover those guys paychecks and NCSU will not cover it that’s for certain.

SFN: Charge us $2.50 extra per game for football tickets as a “coaching surcharge” 7 games. 60,000 people per game. That is $1,050,000 per year. More than enough to pay for 2 or 3 of the best assistants in America. Once Trestman’s contract ends, you now have that.

The problem isn’t that we can’t find ways to pay for things. The problem is that once we find ways to pay for things, Lee Fowler and Nora Lynn Finch find a million other places to SPEND the money.

We will soon have some of the best overall athletics facilities in America and not a single nationally successful program because nobody understands the impact of coaching.

Referring back to the “borrowed” stadium for the ECU vs. Miami game back in ’99 — Included in that “borrowed” statement was significant financial contributions from ECU to NCSU. (after the goal posts were ripped down)

If the Pirate club has money to pay 3 coaches – then they won’t mind paying to rip down goal posts.

Now most people dont know that when these 2 teams stopped playing – it was because ECU fans tore down the goal posts, ripped all the grass out of the field, pulled seats out of the stadium… so forth.

If 100,000 $ needs to be paid to NCSU for just two goals posts, it’s a price well worth paying for Terry Holland.

ECU fans are going to be drunk and rowdy, but so will a majority of NCSU fans. There’s a lot of ECU alum in the Raleigh area that are old enough to know better than to destroy CF Stadium. I doubt any Pirates will try and piss on you though.

The low blow by the eZu pi-rats and the holes is getting old. Get your facts straight people. The people involved in that shooting were in no way affiliated with NCSU. They weren’t even going to attend the game. As a matter of fact the shooter was a jarhead. Hmmm… all of y’all from dumpy “G-Vegas” should be familiar with the military b/c there is absolutely no entertainment in Eastern NC so they are so desperate that they raid EZU and start fights at Cabana’s. As for the BC game, our student section was overpacked, yes OVERPACKED (Imagine that hole fans who peaced out at half-time while getting spanked by S. Fla. and the same hole fans who haven’t packed out “lovely pine tree surrounded” Kenan since Brown was there). The fire marshall and other administrators from up above at Vaughn Towers noted that. As a result of this ushers and law enforcement no longer allowed an exit with re-entry into the section. So as a result of this the diehard fans pissed in the stands instead of losing their spot to see the game (i personally would have pissed my own pants b4 urinating at cf stadium).
As far as our rivals go, I could give a rat’s ass about EZU. I’m a student here at state so i guess at my young age i missed the “importance ” of this rivalry. EZU is like a pesky insect. not a real concern. our rivals are the holes and twerps.

  17. wvillepack 11/16/2006 at 6:44 AM #

So what you are saying WufPirate is that tearing up another schools’ property is ok???? as long as you have the funds to pay for it???? That makes it worth it???? Wow! I didnt’ realize that was how it worked. Are you suggesting that it is in Terry Holland’s budget??? I got some money saved up. I think I’ll bust some of my neighbors windows…then leave a check to cover that damage. Should be fun, right???????

  18. GoldenChain 11/16/2006 at 12:17 PM #

Having been at C-F for 3 loses to ECU, I made the decision this week to give my tickets to two ECU fans and threw in the parking pass as well.
Perhaps if we get embarrassed in our own (beautiful) facility then have it ransacked by drunken yahoos then some kind of point will be made to the administration, athletic department, and coaching staff.
    One can only hope.

    Hey DixieChick
Ya’ll are a bunch of loud mouth, think you are better than you really are, pussy’s. Bitch bitch bitch. We will play you anytime, anywhere. Ya’ll will not play us b/c you are scared. State is a bigger school, that gets more money, more this, and more that…..and we still kick your ass in baseball and football. You dismiss us as drunken loud mouths who want to damage your precious stadium. Give me a break.
The goal post thing was a joke! Why would we storm the field of a team that sucks. Rice had a better chance of getting stormed than you bastards.
Also, I will take G-vegas any day over yank invested Raleiwood.
And another thing…….we may be pesky twirps but we sure have kicked your ass over the last twenty years.
I would be pissed too!!! LOL
Also, as far as the EZU comment goes…….sorry our atletes can’t all be amphibious……we are working on it!! LOL. Say that to your doctor when he performs surgery on you…..b/c he probably graduated from ECU….or say to that a Project Manager when he hands one of your dumbass engineers a change order b/c they do not what the hell they are doing!!
See ya in dumpy old Gvegas next year. I suspect the results will be the same. Better pray for Cowher and a Philip Rivers Clone.
