You'll get nothing and like it.

From the Desk of Lee Fowler

Dear Wolfpack Nation:

I want to put to bed any suggestions made by the lunatic fringe (you know who you are) that coach Chuck Amato will be dismissed today, this week, at the end of this season, or anytime soon. Two days have passed since we lost to the University of North Carolina, and I know I already feel much better about our situation. (Its amazing what a 5th of Dewar’s and 18 holes will remedy.)

All of you ridiculous, contemptable stooges who contribute your hard earned money to sit in the stands with your Lifetime Seating Rights and boo our coaches, or type your uneducated opinions from your inter-nets need to keep one thing in mind: not all Ohio State fans like Jim Tressel, either. Heck, I heard he lost 5 games one year.

Kindly disregard the last three years, which have produced 4, 5, and 2 wins against Division I schools, and a 1-5 record against UNC and Wake. Coach Amato has us on an upward trejectory, you freaks need to give it a few more years. As I have tried to tell you unwashed masses over the years, no one knows more about the situation than I do. I’m not what you’d call a change agent, so just call me “Coach.”

I will never understand your obsession with beating UNC, Wake, or any other school in the ACC. We’ve got us a nice football stadium and Coach Amato has worked hard to bring in another bumper recruiting crop (ranked #51 last I checked) which puts us squarely where we are as an athletics department, in general.

All we need is about 6 or 7 more defensive backs to go with the 21 we have on the roster right now. (In Chuck We Trust, right?). Even though we will graduate 4 of the paltry 14 offensive lineman (3 of them starters) that we have on scholarship, I feel good that the players who weren’t good enough to even see an occasional snap this year will suddenly emerge as dominant pavers next year.

I hope you’ll join me in giving it another year or twenty to see where things go. We’ve got a big game against ECTC next weekend, and we need you to be there hollerin’ for the boys in red (just not at the coaches). The stakes are huge. We have a chance to beat our first I-A in state school this year and to record our 4th win of the season, which will be our seventh best season since 2000.

In closing, Chuck, Kay, and I look forward to seeing everyone this spring when we travel the state. Things are looking real good for our women’s basketball team, too. Our ladies managed to play Purdue to within 30 and even almost scored 40 points!

One final note, you can make your checks payable to: NCSU Student Aid Association. Lets make it eight consecutive years of sellouts!

Your brother in arms,

Lee Fowler

Athletics Director

NC State University

p.s. that plane with the “Fire Chuck” banner just cost us another 2-star defensive back.

While I think there are very few arguments for keeping Chuck, I’m not sure I understand how his ability to raise funds and improve the stadium is an argument AGAINST him. That sounds like an argument FOR keeping him.

Really, would you want something different than a guy who can raise money and expectations? That is his (only) strong point.

The arguments against him make themselves, and I won’t rehash them here, but I have never understood why his ability to raise funds is a negative.

This is a difficult situation for us. Amato just lost to UNC for the 3rd year in a row and is having the worst year of his tenure. ALL wolfpack fans are livid, (including fans/boosters who supported Sendek.) Cowher is in the last year of his contract, and, supposedly, NC State has already given him a blank check.
    Q. Do we fire Amato now? IF Cowher is interested, would he prefer a 1 yr vacation? How do we fill the 2007 season?
    Q. How do we trust Lee Fowler with another hire?
    Q. Do we give Amato one more year, assuming Cowher wants and will take the head coaching job?
    Q. Is head coach position the only job at NC State that should be available to him, if he wants it? Will the Atheletic Director position be available?

If Cowher wants to leave the NFL for this job for the implicit reasons (e.g. love of Alma Mater, service to his school, desire to coach the college game) then the decision should be swift and decisive for him.

Ergo, work the back channels now, offer him the job, give him 7 days for an answer, then make the change.

If he hesitates, you know there is no deal. (Just like when Hyman Roth told Michael Corleone that he was going to take a nap, and if the money briefcase was on coffee table when he awakened, he knew he had a partner in the Havana deal).

What I’m saying is, there can be no “wait a year” option. Albeit delicately, we have to force Cowher’s hand and now. Amato cannot be trusted to shepard this team beyond one more game. If Cowher isn’t ready to come, then he isn’t the guy for the job. Make him an offer he can’t refuse, yet if he does, move to option #2. Even though he is an alum, we cannot allow him to nily wily around this situation. Its go or no go (and 7 days to give us a decision). Believe me, as a coach, he understands the business decision and forces behind the situation we are in.

If he says no, move on to Paul Johnson.

One thing I know to be sure, we are f’d if we dick around until late December before removing Amato, only to get left with some 3rd stringer assistant coach from Carson Newman.

The window of opportunity is narrow and closing by the day.

Of course he (Cowher) would understand the forces behind the situation we’re in, but that doesn’t change or affect his situation. Family and self-interest always come before business, so I’m not sure a ‘limited-time offer’ is one the would yield us the best results.
Oblinger should be the chessmaster; Fowler a pawn.

When is everyone gonna see that Lee Fowler has one job: being a rainmaker!
As soon as the money stops rolling in and people quit buying tickets then LF will begin to think about makeing a change.

I can’t believe that this is just dawning on me, but in a moment of clarity, I memory serves that CO’cain was fired off of a 6-6 season, which followed an 8-4 bowl season. His final year produced a road win against Texas, and included wins against Clemson, Maryland, Virginia.

In his last 3 years, O’Cain’s teams won 6, 8, and 6 games with signature wins over FSU, Texas, Syracuse (twice). O’Cain’s worst seasons were his 3rd and 4th with two close losses to Alabama and a good Purdue team.

In his last 3 years, Amato’s teams won 5, 8, and 3 games with signature wins over FSU, Va Tech, and Boston College. Amato’s worst seasons were his 5th and 7th and all three seasons featured losses to terrible UNC teams.

Just some things to think about in viewing the current situation against O’Cain’s year 7 dismissal

Mr Fowler should be filling a position this offseason.
Mr Oblinger should be filling a position next offseason.

  9. redfred2 11/20/2006 at 1:36 PM #

^And that says what? for the job Oblinger has done in heading up this group.

  10. codsack 11/20/2006 at 9:34 PM #

Amato’s radio show is dodging questions and not allowing anyone to ask about his job status.

  11. cornellpackfan 11/20/2006 at 10:07 PM #

that guy pete asked him if he would step down with ECU lost and he dodged it and slammed the past

OK, OK, I’ll start it out and y’all join in…………logan….Logan…..LOGAN…..
    LOGAN…..any questions?

I’ve had an epiphany strike my brain (a bit painful, but i’ll survive) Cough up the big bucks for Chow or Logan (both brilliant football minds–better than Spurrier or Richt) maybe let CTC hang around to coach the D, or see if Cowher wants to coach Defense for a while…but for the love of God, keep Portee around!
