Aren’t the Internets Terrible?

A hot topic for discussion over the last 10 days or so is sports fans, internet message boards, and their impact on hiring and firing coaches. Let’s take a look at a few of these public comments in chronological order:

Bobby Bowden

He remained steadfast in his support; Bobby even said he would hire Jeff all over again, even knowing what he does now about how it would end. As for why things didn’t work out, he didn’t point to statistics or won-lost records.

“Because you all ignited it,” he said to a small room of reporters. “You listen to eBay and e-mail and all that junk, and you all kept writing about it and that fans it and makes it grow and grow, and it becomes a cancer. That’s why.”

Bob Lee Swagger

John Bunting and Ron Zook both failed to meet arbitrary performance standards for their positions. A “change” was doubtlessly called for. It was done WHEN IT WAS DONE to appease the loonie lynch mobs. “Loonie lynch mobs” exist within every fan base and they all react in quite predictable fashion. The Internet is “free range”. That is not likely to change. You will see more and more “coaches on hot seats” getting mid-season terminations simply to appease the angry mobs “on the boards”. “Anything to shut up those crazies” is a seminar taught at AD Conventions.

Lee Fowler

Technician: What is the biggest issue facing N.C. State athletics?

Fowler: Well, today the biggest issue facing us is getting a new football coach…But other than that, the biggest challenge? It’s probably the message boards on the Internet. There is so much negative stuff coming off the boards, and I think that drives the newspapers. Then the papers are constantly chasing stuff that’s being talked about on the Internet. But I think that’s the biggest challenge facing all ADs.

There are so many people on the Internet, and you never know who they are. You don’t know if they are affiliated with N.C. State in any way. It’s like an anonymous letter, and when I get an anonymous letter, I throw it in the trash. So, you write things that are just hateful to a lot of a people without any knowledge of what’s really going on.

I believe that each of these quotes hit on some interesting issues, but none of them hit the bull’s eye. Let’s look at where they fall short:

Bobby Bowden

Ignoring the ebay comment, Bobby’s comments may be the closest to hitting the mark. Bobby blames the media for blindly repeating comments from the internet further inciting fan unrest. Bob Lee’s column expands on this point:

There is one sportswriter for the N&O who apparently never interviews coaches or players and maybe never attends games. His articles are simply one and two day old regurgitations of “message board” prattle. In other words, his “sources” are fuzzy-cheeked dorm rats and 45 y/o Little League right fielders.

It should be obvious to even the most casual observer that the mass media (MM) has its fair share of idiots (Barry Saunders leaps immediately to mind). But the MM will usually have at least one fact (sometimes wrong, often incomplete) on which to base their comments. In the case of John Bunting and Jeff Bowden, the facts are indisputable…they didn’t win enough. In each case, you would have to be deaf, dumb, and blind not to see this point.

But Bobby’s comments are certainly correct in that once the MM smells blood; they will continue to swarm the wounded until it has been completely devoured. Sometimes it will start with message boards….and sometimes it is simply recycled from other parts of the MM. (More on managing the media later.)

State has certainly suffered this year from recycled garbage.

– Starting with the idiot Doyel, State BB fans are labeled as unrealistic and impossible to please. We still hear that same swill spewed out seven months later during State’s first big basketball game of the year.

– Stewart Mandell labels Amato has one of the worst coaches in college FB and three games into the season, Mark May starts speculating on national TV that Amato might not even survive until the end of the season.

In both cases, complete and total BS is repeated ad nauseum with absolutely no effort put into fact checking the original story. (Do we even need to bring up the idiot Saunders and his take on low-blow Chris Paul?)

Bob Lee

Now Bob Lee’s comments may be totally correct. Lord knows we have enough trouble keeping track of our AD…I am more than willing to let BLS keep track of his (better known as Prince Tassel-Loafer). However, there are plenty of valid reasons to have fired Bunting in the middle of the season. Here are a few:

– We’ve already discussed the herd-mentality of the mass media. How do you think that UNC would have been portrayed over the last month or so of the season? How many callers to Bunting’s weekly radio show would have been cut off in the middle of their comments? What would have happened to recruits that were either “committed” or were considering UNC? By announcing that Bunting would be let go at the end of the season, all of these things were immediately controlled.

– How do you think that the 100 or so UNC FB players felt before the announcement? They knew what was being said and they knew that Bunting was in trouble. With a single announcement, the players were taken off of the hook. They were under no additional pressure trying to win in order to keep their coach employed. They were free to go out and play for themselves.

– Before the announcement, what was the worst-case scenario for UNC fans? Was a 1-10 record the worst-case?….No! I believe that the worst-case scenario would have been a miracle win over ND or GT followed by wins over State and Duke. This exact scenario kept Bunting employed two years ago. It may or may not have been enough this year…but it sure would have been enough to keep the Bunting Battles going on the message boards. It would also have been enough to give the MM fuel to blast UNC for firing a coach that had “shown improvement”.

Obviously, I was not privy to any of the discussions that ultimately led to Bunting’s dismissal. But I seriously doubt that calming the internet message boards had anything to do with it. I have to believe that it was done to control a bad situation, to make sure that it didn’t get any worse, and to make sure that UNC could move past the Bunting era with the least amount of additional pain.

Lee Fowler

I am sure that many of you will be shocked (Not!) to read that that Lee Fowler missed the mark completely. How many adults with triple-digit IQ’s have trouble identifying a pimple-faced kid (or idiot) masquerading on a message board? How difficult is it to ignore a complete and total idiot posting on a message board? How difficult is to tell that Wolf98764 is really a UNC fan?

Lee’s problems don’t come from any of these sources. Lee’s problem is that he tries to ignore a bad situation rather than manage it. He prefers to “hope for the best” rather than work to achieve the “best”. Specifically, he seems to utterly ignore the W/L record accumulated by the coaches that are supposed to report to him.

The fan unrest displayed for the previous five seasons in basketball and more recently in football had absolutely nothing to do with anonymous fans, imposters from other fan bases, or from people with no knowledge. The fans that are giving LF headaches are simply grown adults with average memories that can tell the difference between winning and losing.

BTW, Lee’s attempts to marginalize State fans that aren’t happy with losing by labeling them as the lunatic fringe didn’t win him any friends either. He can label discussion of W/L records as “negative” if he chooses, but I doubt that he can convince anyone that those discussions are wrong or worthless.

PARTING THOUGHTS

The large majority of State fans, grads, and season ticket holders don’t fall into the elite category of High Rollers. I’m talking about the people that can pick up the phone and call the AD or the chancellor and get through to them. The sorts of people that have corporate jets to lend, have their names engraved on buildings, and frequently get to schmooze with the coaches. While we can debate the effect of message board posters, there is not really any doubt that these High Rollers can play a major role in all aspects of the university and especially in the athletic department.

Here’s a little blurb that most people have already seen from Dave Glenn:

“I’ve been around this university for a long, long time,” a former BOT member told the ACC Sports Journal. “I know the decision-makers, I know the trustees, and I know many other (N.C. State) people, and it is almost impossible to find anyone of influence who is standing in support of Chuck Amato right now. To my knowledge, among those folks, there is absolutely zero support for keeping him.

I can’t help but wonder where all of these High Rollers were in 2001 at the conclusion of the basketball season. The 2000 basketball season was looking pretty good until a seven-game losing streak took State from a near certain NCAA bid back to the NIT. That disappointing season was then followed up by a 13-16 season. Yet Herb maintained support from the High Rollers until the very end.

Do the actions of this week signal a basic change in the way the High Rollers at State handle losing? Or do the actions of this week and those from 2001 illustrate the differences in the way that Chuck and Herb handled the Big Wheels? BLS may be right about what goes on at AD conventions…..but I’m betting that “Who not to piss off” is frequently covered at coaching conventions.

    Nice writeup.

I bet the difference was academics, though I can’t be sure and don’t have the stats to back it up. The showboating, undisciplined players on display for Amato certainly didn’t help him out any, but the two Sendek teams mentioned had their share of public meltdowns as well- Kenny Inge staring down refs, Thornton’s T at MD and his drunk driving incident come immediately to mind. The perception was there, fact-based or not, that Sendek ran a clean program where players who stayed, graduated. That perception has not been there for Chuck, IMO.

I have seen case in NC state government where an official had his secretary print out all his e-mails so that he could read them. I can only picture Lee only a few steps beyond that. Sure, he can use the internet, but yet he fails to understand it.

Our technology allows individuals to act big. Dan Rather was taken down by a blogger–take that mass media! Good or bad, fans now have a way to express our thoughts and emotions.

I think this is just mumbo jumbo talk to the ears of the athletics department. Take a look at GoPack.com. An unusable mess with happy go lucky content. Any historic information or stats is either outdate or non existent. Too many ads for my taste. Lee could harness the power of the internet, but he chooses to scoff at it. Have you tried to use read the “blog” on there?

Are we to blind to see that we as message board commentors are now having a voice? Before message boards there was water cooler talk and other than a few associates no one really knew what you or others felt. Good or bad, now once you post on a message board it’s there as long as the servers keep a copy for all the world to see and share. You suddenly have a much bigger audience than just your associates. It would be similar to the same number of people writing editorials in the newspaper. But with the ability to almost realtime converse.

20/20 did a program a while ago about the polarization of america. Interestingly when groups of people get together with similar views and discuss those views they tended take their views to the extremes of the spectra. It was a very interesting piece about the psychology of group think. Wonder if that is happening as well in the message board arenas where opinions become extreme and polarized.

I wonder if Foulup has heard about the telephone yet! Shhhhh! He may take his flintlock out to hunt it next!

The difference between Herb & Chuck was simple – it’s not the high rollers you have to worry about ticking off, but the MM of which you speak. Herb didn’t appear in any lists of the worst coaches in the country. He never told a roomful of reporters that he lost a game because the other team was allowed to recruit talented morons while he was stuck with lousy smart kids. He never called the press “you people” and deliberatey antagonized them, or made himself an easy target by dressing like a pimp.

And as mentioned, the MM is lazy. I’m in PR and work w/ the media for a living, and it’s been my experience that it’s true. All the sportswiters and columnists that were rushing to chastize NCSU after Herb left simply saw 10 seasons’ worth of records, and compared them to the seven before that. No analysis of who we actually played and beat, no real feeling of how much weight wins versus the rest of the Big Four really mean (thanks to ESPN and Nike, UNC-Duke is the only college basketball rivalry that’s ever existed, but that’s another story), and never any mention that, at least by my standards, it was the utter predictability of every season and no reason to hope for anything different next year that frustrated fans more than the mere records. Hey, if you’re just glancing through an ACC media guide and just look strictly at high-level numbers, Herb had a decent run and Amato not so much. Hence the media reactions to the two scenarios – ironic, because from a story standpoint Amato is a much more sympathetic character than Sendek (a passionate alumnus given the ax versus a stiff intellectual who left on his own volition).

With all that being said, I will say that the Internet has certainly lowered discourse. While there’s nothing wrong with expressing disapproval of a coach’s results (or lack thereof), I am saddened to see the personal insults and attacks that some direct to coaches on message boards and blogs. There’s no reason fans and coaches can’t agree to disagree and move on with civility. It should be noted, however, that this is hardly exclusive to the realm of NC State athletics. I’d venture to say Herb and Chuck were both treated much more kindly than Matt Doherty.

I think if one was to read or even glance over just one entry and comments on this blog, he or she would no doubt gain a lot of perspective that the members of this community are neither ignorant, nor out to purely detract from NCSU athletics. The people on this site tend to be among the more avid wolfpack fans, and why would anyone every want to alienate their fan base? We are not a bunch of punks on this site. It is very easy and unstressful to label us as a “lunatic fringe,” yet how can we be lunatics if we are this avid about the NCSU sports teams’ success? I think that Lee Fowler being the ignorant SOB that he is would rather take the easy route of labeling us as ignorant or crazy, rather than to ever take the hard core wolfpack fans that post on here seriously. I love NCSU just as much as the next guy and I think that it is pretty easy to get a feel for who is who on this site. Most of us are genuine fans who live and die by wolfpack sports, I’d appreciate it if our administration would respect me and not just my or my dad’s pocketbook… Why should we be ignored or attacked if we genuinely want what is best for wolfpack sports? The “Lee Fowler Weight Loss Program” continues….

If message boards are the cause, what was the cause before message boards? “A few fans in the cheap seats”, where, coincidentally, you’ll find the most passionate and knowledgeable of fans. Those who give what they can, and sacrifice other luxuries for the privilege of attending a Collegiate Sporting event. Those who interact with colleagues from rival institutions, and aren’t insulated from the “Lunatic Fringe” (aka the rank in file fan) of other institutions of higher learning. A better attachment would be “Die Hards” and if you read the previous threads on this very site, you’ll see various examples. I recall the majority of comments early on this year where we defended Amato from MM attacks. And therein is the heart of the matter concerning message boards. The MM cannot tell you what to think, but they can tell you what to think about. Stories in newspapers, with readerships that dwarf the readerships of Blogs, questioning a coaches job security or Disseminating or plageurizing internet chatter have far more impact. They generate new blog chatter, and feed the fire on Ebay. But the fatcats that give the most, have the real power. If WM or another gentlemen of his stature are 100% behind Chuck, they’d give up 5,000 of us to keep him happy. Money talks (or wins talk) and BS just floats on water.

The thing that pisses FoulUp off, is not the “negative” comments, its the fact that he has NO say in the flow of information. No lame press releases dictate our conversation here. No amount of spin can limit our viewpoints (which are limiltess, unlike print media) and the relevant information is readily available, no matter how much he tries to ignore or supress it.

Do we listen to college football’s all-time leading winner or some anonymous people on the internet? The truth hurts…

  11. class of 74 12/01/2006 at 7:49 AM #

A very good, thoughtful piece and some good comments as well. The MM is lazy as is our AD, and we all should recognize that by now. The internet pushes them, the MM, and leads them I believe due to the fact many of us have more passion for these subjects than they do. To them following NCSU it’s a job, to us here NCSU is our school, our memories, our passion and our desire to see nothing but the best both for and from our school.

As for LF, he’s just lazy and wants to be everyone’s in the athletic department friend. He fails in his primary mission to lead because leadership is sometimes a very tough job. A good AD is not afraid of confrontation and the best AD’s know how to handle this aspect with a velvet hammer. We unfortunately have an ostrich for an AD, one who seeks to bury his head when problems arise. His sales staff are his coaches and we are his customers. Blaming us for his product is monumentally stupid on his part.

“Or do the actions of this week and those from 2001 illustrate the differences in the way that Chuck and Herb handled the Big Wheels?”

    This, sadly, is the difference.

Herb fed the big dogs and they did not want to get rid of their “friend”.

The time Herb left a seat for Murphy’s dead mother. Puh-lease
The upteen stories about Herb being on Murphy’s boat.
Heck even Laddie had a very close relationship with him.

IMO the way a coach sucks up to the money people should not effect his job situation but it obviously does.

  13. PAPacker 12/01/2006 at 8:07 AM #

If you look at the swells in number of hits that make sfn inaccessible at times, you get a sense that “the fringe” is much deeper and wider than regular posters. Apart from a very small number of posters who exaggerate at times, SFN and RAWFS consitute a a key source of perspective outside the MM. I would bet that if users of these sites could be identified, one would find that they constitute the core loyal, ticket-buying, institution-promotiing, middle class demographic State desires to populate its fanbase.

  14. Buddygreen 12/01/2006 at 8:07 AM #

If Lee Fowler really believes internet chat is the number one issue facing AD’s regarding college athletics, he should be fired immediately. Even if it were partially true commenting on it only serves to give it more credibilty. Fowler has no clue regarding public relations and how to get the media to serve NCSU interests. Fowler is just blame dumb! I really miss Les as our AD. He was very good at fund reasing, he knew how to maintain a happy relationship with the media. He expanded our radio coverage. I think Lee for the fact that I can listen to State football and basketball games on an FM station in Charlotte. I can think of lots of things Les did for NCSU, I have hard time doing that in Fowler’s case. I wish Les would come back as AD.

I am saddened to see the personal insults and attacks that some direct to coaches on message boards and blogs.

I hope everyone read BLS’s entire commentary that I linked. He covered this very thing. The bile too often seen on message boards is just another example of the social decay in today’s society.

  16. for2n8son 12/01/2006 at 8:13 AM #

^”With all that being said, I will say that the Internet has certainly lowered discourse. In addition to that, we have to ask ourselves, “what is my motivation for what I post on this board? I’m I trying to make things better or am I just out for the satisfaction of taking a cheep shot at someone who is doing something that I don’t like?”

We are mostly adults and sincere fans of NCSU, so we aught to take some consideration as to how what we say effects what is likely to happen to the athletic program we are trying to support. Public humiliation of people who are in place is not going to encourage someone better to come and replace them. If no one will come, you are stuck with they person that is already there and what kind of effort do you think we will get from them in addressing our concerns?

  17. VaWolf82 12/01/2006 at 8:14 AM #

I wish Les would come back as AD.

Les did many good things, but the fact that he wanted to keep MOC after the 1999 season tells me that he is better off at the Citadel.

  18. for2n8son 12/01/2006 at 8:15 AM #

    And, no, I didn’t misspell “cheap”. It’s a pun.

  19. joe 12/01/2006 at 8:27 AM #

One problem with message boards is they are available 24/7. That means people can jump on right after the game is over or during a game and post when emotions are running very high. The other problem is that people can hide behind their keyboard and say all kinds of stuff they would not say in person.

Has anyone read the article from the Richmond Times Dispatch that was posted on PackPride: “Pack Chooses the Lowe Road”?

    http://www.timesdispatch.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=RTD/MGArticle/RTD_BasicArticle&s=1045855934926&c=MGArticle&cid=1149191963107&path=!sports!colleges

This article makes it sound like we as fans aren’t happy with Lowe as our coach, and that we can’t be satisfied. The author alludes to Lowe being on a “the hot seat between eternal flames in Durham and Chapel Hill.” The use of the hot seat metaphor is absolutely ridiculous. This sort of garbage produced by the media is much more damning and outright ridiculous than anything written on a message board.

And a little message to Fowler: I’m an NC State alum (BS EE ’02, MS EE ’03), and a football season ticket holder. I have bled Wolfpack red my entire life and am as devoted to the university as anyone. Is this that thanks I get for my devotion…being called a member of the lunatic fringe, and being told that voicing my opinion on SFN is contributing to the biggest problem facing the athletic program. Give me a break. Fowler should be have been fired gross incompetance a long time ago.

  23. tvp 12/01/2006 at 8:37 AM #

I’m sure you guys will be all over this, but “Coach” took yet another shot at us today:

    Quote:
    ——————————————————————————–
“I love the way our fans are, I love the way they want to win,” Fowler said. “But it was really frustrating to see the lack of appreciation for Herb and how much he did here. Whether you liked it or not, he was a heck of a coach and very successful. I think all the criticism drove him away for the security of his family.”
    ——————————————————————————–

    “Security of his family?”

You know what, that is it. I have had it. I have had it up to here with this pretentious, holier-than-thou, know-it-all drunk.

LEE FOWLER: GET OUT. LEAVE. RESIGN. QUIT.

It’s as if he actively searches for opportunities to talk @#%$ about his customers in the media. He’s a cancer to our school and our athletics program.

    Un-believable. Absolutely inexcusable.

  24. Rick 12/01/2006 at 8:45 AM #

“Whether you liked it or not, he was a heck of a coach and very successful.”

Everytime he opens his mouth he embarrases himself.

    ^^

ANYONE who thinks Fowler can keep his stupid self out of the paper doesnt understand the concept of reality. Anyone who thought he’d be quiet during this search was also kidding themselves.
