Wacky Wednesday: Bunting, N&O, Media, Miami, Etc

After we set the table yesterday with this diversion that many seemed to like, we thought that we would use today to follow-up on some things from the “life is stranger than fiction” file.

John Bunting
Carolina continues to make lists that nobody wants to be a part of as the focus of everyone’s jokes.

* The noose is tightening around John Bunting’s neck. The noose is tightening to the point that it feels like Bunting is cracking with crazy. You can hear some of it by clicking here. What is he talking about? Every thing that he mentioned as positives of the program are all actually problems that have come together to create this mess for Bunting – attrition, disciplinary problems, poor recruiting, etc.

* The folks in the media who are Tarheel fans and like to position their reporting of the facts as unbiased are continuing their assault with numbers. (Pardon me, I take that previous sentence back. I just read the story titled “Judging the Facts on Bunting” and realized that the story provided no facts on which to judge Bunting).

* I’m just curious — when Les Robinson had created the worst 5 year period in the history of NC State Basketball, where were all of the the media’s “Judging Les Robinson on the facts” articles? When Herb Sendek had created another of the worst 5 year periods in the history of NC State Basketball, where were all of the local pieces highlighting the “facts”?

* While we are asking about the consistency of the media on certain topics…may I ask where the News & Observer‘s John Bunting Cartoon is for this year? The Chuck Amato cartoon has been out there on its own for 50 days and we continue to wait for the spoof on Bunting that has not yet come. Click here for a link to a key previous conversations.

Miami Situation
Link to scUM of the ACC

Watching the fallout of the Miami-FIU fight has been very interesting and even morosely entertaining. Folks are jumping on it from all sorts of different angles. Some are even asking if Virginia Tech is next?

For example – you could not make-up some of the stuff that is happening down there if you needed to craft a fictional story.

First, check this out. This is the kind of person that Miami has chosen to represent them. Is it any wonder why many in the ACC are now scratching our heads about what we have brought on to ourselves?

Next, be careful not to cry when you click on this link. Can you believe the sad irony?

The Miami Dade Police Department kicked off their annual “Join-a-Team, Not-a-Gang program on Tuesday, October 10th. This program is a cooperative effort, which includes Miami Dade Public Schools, the University of Miami Athletic Department, and Florida Power & Light Company.

The program gives out a “Most Improved Student Award”. Each hard working student will get a chance to visit a University of Miami football practice, a tour of athletic facilities, and a chance to meet the University of Miami football coaches and student-athletes.

Students are selected by their school and selection is based on improvement in academics, behavior, and attendance. The visits take place once a week and continue through football season. Winners and a D.A.R.E. officer from each school will be visiting the school once a week throughout the football season.

This Saturday, the Miami Dade Police Department will bring about 700 children to the Miami vs. FIU football game as part of the program.

But, I guess you have to give Miami credit for getting this one right. Please see our comments regarding this topic by clicking here.

On the football side…one starts to wonder if anyone will actually want the Miami job when it opens at the end of the year. Tony Barnhart wrote a fantastic piece that expresses many of the thoughts that I have had about the Hurriance program’s run prior to the fight; Barnhart expressly states that the Miami football program is done and the ACC has not gotten what it was expecting. You should check it out.

What Miami and the ACC don’t seem to get is that this is so much bigger than 30 horrible minutes on a Saturday. Simply stated: The football program at the University of Miami is not going to recover from this, at least not in this generation. Athletic director Paul Dee will be gone at the end of the year and his replacement will be charged with cleaning this up. And when the new AD goes to hire a big time football coach, he will be shocked that no established, successful person will want the job.

There is too much baggage. The expectations of parts of the fan base are insane. Miami plays in the single worst football facility (Orange Bowl) among the BCS conferences. If the Hurricanes aren’t playing Florida State, the attendance is awful. Only 29,621 turned out for North Carolina on Oct. 7.

The painful truth is that Miami football has overachieved because of its location, which made it easier for great coaches to bring in great players. That is to their credit. Miami overcame a lot to build an incredible football tradition that lasted for almost 25 years.

But it’s over. It’s sad, but it’s over

Big Daddy Wolf Says: “Wonder how well O’Cain and Sheridan would have done with the new facilities,”

A lot of people wonder this. Does anyone hold O’Cain and Sheridan accountable for not causing these kind of facilities?

  2. joe 10/18/2006 at 6:29 PM #

One reason CF stadium was not upgraded was it took a long time to build the RBC Center – that was the focus of fundraising. Valvano started the fundraising in the 80s and it did not open until 1999 – it was at least a 10 year effort to build it.

^*Did Miami ever ask about playing in the Dolphins new stadium? Maybe they did and got turned down. The Orange Bowl is old and in a bad area.*

Pro Player stadium is a good ways away from Miami’s campus. Probably 30 minutes or more in normal city traffic, longer on game days. I doubt they even considered holding games there.

    *What over-the-top BS!

Pay them (coaches)…..and they will come. Get the right coach…and the kids will come. Any one that thinks that a top coach couldn’t recruit at Miami is either stupid or crazy.*

Amen. Miami is a rehire of Butch Davis away from being a top 5 program again.

  4. WolfPup35 10/18/2006 at 7:15 PM #

It sounds to me like somebody needs to get the UM team a kitten. Maybe take them out for some ice cream and show the poor, neglected bastards a little love with chocolate sprinkles…who doesn’t like chocolate sprinkles???

  5. WolfPup35 10/18/2006 at 7:20 PM #

Just kidding, this has got to be the biggest debacle in the acc since the brawl in the game vs LSU..everyone involved should be dismissed from their respective team..NO exceptions. Sound harsh?? Think about it, a football helmet is a weapon, and these kids are freak of nature strong!Does someone need to be seriously injured or killed before the perverbial foot drops?? Who cares if they won’t play vs Duke, they shouldn’t play against anyone anymore, at least not where they are now. As for criminal charges, that’s one up to the Dade county Sheriff (laugh, cough).

  6. RAWFS 10/18/2006 at 10:41 PM #

One of the biggest red herrings I hear is “if Mike O’Cain had those facilities…”

The simple fact is that Mike O’Cain never got anyone excited enough to build him those facilities.

If he were still coach, do you think the Murphy Center, the Vaughn and the NEZ would all be built?

  7. beowolf 10/18/2006 at 10:56 PM #

Yes, Grey Blackwell attended NC State; he and I both drew cartoons for Technician. He was three years in front of me. It’s 16 years later and he’s still drawing cartoons. He’s got to be nearly 40, probably 38 or so. Verily, it’s hard out there for a hack — wouldn’t you say?

And as has been mentioned before, look at how the partisan press gets VICIOUS when a tarheel coach underperforms. If Bunting doesn’t resign before the season’s over, he’ll probably wind up being the Catholic priest who turned Mark Foley into a page-chasing bugger or something. I still can’t get over how Matt “True Blue” Doherty went from having SPORTS reporters talking about his hair to, in two short years, “SUDDENLY” turning out to be a PSYCHO who was DANGEROUS and lobbed basketballs at the poor dears’ heads and made Saint Dean turn over in his Basement Office…

  8. StateFans 10/19/2006 at 7:51 AM #

One other thing about Miami just paying for some great coaches and then they will be fine — can they afford it? If they could, then why did they hire an assistant named Butch Davis and Larry Coker the last couple of times that their job was open.

This is why their extremely small alumni base is so important. I know that their fund raising made huge strides in this decade…but, how can they run an Athletics Department on the money generated by so few fans in the Orange Bowl?

Miami doesn’t have the infrastructure (people, money, facilities, support) to compete over the long term if they aren’t bending the rules and recruiting thugs. That is their differentiation. When you take that differentiation away, you aren’t left with anything else to generate success.

  9. choppack1 10/19/2006 at 8:11 AM #

“Schools like Oklahoma’s troubles were different. They won BEFORE Switzer. They have awesome facilities, a large alumni base, and fan support that packs large stadiums. Miami has NONE of that. Miami has a heritage built on crooks and criminals and thugs. Once you take that a way you have sunny weather and good parties and a school that is going to expect its players to be exemplary. Where are they going to find those kids considering that they have never found them before?”

I don’t know. I still think that you’ve got a large South Florida population of football players that are more talented than any place in the country. Is there a thug factor – definitely. However, I believe that can be changed over time. The problem has been that Miami has too often embraced that image – happy and proud to be the black hat of college football. Give O’Leary a shot there. Heck, give Steve Logan a shot – I guarantee you, they can make Miami strong again. Granted, they may never have the run they had in the 80s and 90s when South Florida talent wasn’t mined as heavily as it is now, but they should still be a Top 25 team.

  10. choppack1 10/19/2006 at 8:17 AM #

Regarding Bunting – I stated earlier when Dave Glenn started asking critical questions in an interview w/ Baddour that he was “setting the table” for running Bunting out of town. Watch how quickly the Tarheel nation moves – I’ll be shocked if Bunting makes it out this year unless his team does a complete 180. All of a sudden Bunting is on the hotseat? Amazing, he’s in his 6th year and he’s only had ONE winning season! As if this collapse is a shock – this team has simply displayed the inconsistent performance that all of his Buntings teams have displayed w/ the exception of his first year.

(SFN: Big Daddy Wolf….we appreciate your comments and zeal…but, we also aren’t like the rest of the internet where you can just post what you think as fact and move on. Inaccurate conclusions based on your own opinion presented as fact on topics like “Why Sheridan left”, etc are going to be edited. Just wanted to let you know. Additionally, we are not interesed in hosting another debate on the MOC years. Plenty of them exist on other entries like the original Wednesday entry. Thanks.

Some bafoon said O’cain didn’t get people excited enough to upgrade. Why bash a man that had little to do with it. O’Cain took over under the reign of UNC loyalist Anti Wolpack sports Todd Turner. Not one facility improvement happened under Todd Turner and the basketball programs and football program suffered while both were strapped with self imposed university restrictions.

And the whole time the UNC board was killing NC State athletics with Turner and Montieth plus restrictions they were pouring money into unprecidented upgrades and new football facilites at Chapel Hill. O’Cain did a great job considering his handicaps plus many forget the shooting incident were half his defense was kicked off the team. If that were Chapel Hill, FSU. or Miami half those kids would have never missed a practice and the other half would had one game suspensions, but Turner kicked them all off the team. O’Cain did a great job considering the situation.

Given what Chuck has I hope we do better and I support Chuck and think he has done some wonderful things so far, wish we still has Les Robinson as AD instead this buffone we have now who seems more interested in promoting himself instead of the school. I just grow tired of watching people on here bash O’Cain and Les Robinson when both of those guys poured their souls into a job lots of people didn’t want and did their jobs in a bad period for NC State Athletics when the school didn’t support either program well at all. I mean who shouldn’t thank Les for coming in trying to clean up the mess when Dick Vitale was publicy saying no one in the country wants that job, you cannot win there with the restrictions!! Same with football

O’Cain had some great years we played in Jacksonville twice and peach bowl once. Remember the Fog bowl!

SFN: Previously you said that O’Cain took over a program in decline. Now you hold up his only real successful seasons as fantastic…yet these seasons were all constructed with players he inherited from Sheridan. I thought that you said that the program was in decline? What was ‘declining’ was MOC’s last 4 to 5 years…which is partly why we made a move to something fresh.

After O’Cain’s good years the school did nothing as far as football facilties. I hope we learn from our mistakes and never let the UNC Tarheel Board of Govenors strap our program again. But with Tar Heel man Erskine Bowels at the helm I dare say we not going to get a fair shake as usual. Seems only school he ever talks about is Chapel Hill! Does he even know a there’s a UNC system school in Raleigh? WE don’t vote for him and yet we still got to live with him. What that about?

  12. Big Daddy Wolf 10/19/2006 at 8:55 AM #

Bunting getting ready to see what Doherty, Valvano, and Torbush found out. That contract he got ain’t worth the paper it is printed on. UNC Board of Govenors does what it pleases. Bunting will be told what is options are and what he will be paid. It will not be what is in his contract. Doherty got the royal screw bascially it was take this or nothing we will claim improper conduct. Notice Baddour has menitoned he is talking to the players. Same tactic they used on Doherty. What Ad undermines a coach by interviewing players like Baddour is doing to Bunting and did to Doherty? Wonder what they will accuse Bunting with, I bet some disturbing things start making its way through the press soon about Bunting just like they did to Doherty. It is the UNC system way!

“Pro Player stadium is a good ways away from Miami’s campus. Probably 30 minutes or more in normal city traffic, longer on game days. I doubt they even considered holding games there. ”

UCLA plays home games at the Rose Bowl (in Pasadena), which is about an hour drive from West LA, without trafic.

    Big Daddy —

If these sites are unhealthy and hurt us — then a lot of people must visit them and feel they are credible. Most of what I hear is that what gets said here or on any website has no impact — it’s merely the mirror of what is being said or felt by thousands of fans who never go to a web site.

I don’t like to read the whining and criticism both when we win and we lose. However, people have a right to their opinion.

I feel certain that even the top 10-20 schools have critical voices. I would rather have that then everyone being in lock step like a bunch of mindless robots following the party line — acccepting blindly the status quo as though it were gospel.

As for the term Nancy boys — save that for our congressmen. Using terms like that is off the point and — well crude.

  15. CaptainCraptacular 10/19/2006 at 2:16 PM #

^*O’Cain had some great years we played in Jacksonville twice and peach bowl once. Remember the Fog bowl!*

I was at the Fog Bowl and remember the fog part very well. That was Sheridan’s last year though, so you can’t credit it to O’Cain. Unfortunately there wasn’t much good in the game to remember. The main memory was hearing the Gator fans nearest the action cheer when Errict Rhett made a first down, then listen to it spread around the stadium to my side as people figured out what had happened.

Not to nitpick, but O’Cain didn’t go to Jacksonville either. His 3 bowls in 7 seasons were the Hall of Fame Bowl in Tampa vs. Michigan (L 42-7) the Peach Bowl vs Miss State (W 28-24), and the Micron PC bowl vs. Miami (L 46-23).

“We already got a black eye over the Sendek and Fowler episode”

Yeah, RIGHT. That was all the fault of the fans, there is absolutely no doubt about it.

We were all dead set against any improvements also. Right you are again there Buffalo Bob.

“Amato, Fowler, Lowe, and Sendek have all commented how sites like this are unhealthy and do not help or encourage our growth in Athletics.”

    That’s a 50/50 split there pal.

Like you admitted up there already, there were many needs for changes, but what you’re saying is that no one beyond those in charge, should say a word about them, until after they actually occur.

Another, ‘Shhh!!! Hush up, that’s just not proper behavior young man!’, kinda post(s).

For some people, nice, quiet, complacency is their only comfort zone. We’ve seen it already.

RAWFS Says: “The simple fact is that Mike O’Cain never got anyone excited enough to build him those facilities.”

If I recall correctly, Mike O’Cain never got anyone excited, period. And this includes the football team. Any excitement was generated by the players themselves, the assistant coaches or the fans.

  18. Wolfpack4ever 10/19/2006 at 2:59 PM #

“Pro Player stadium is a good ways away from Miami’s campus. Probably 30 minutes or more in normal city traffic, longer on game days. I doubt they even considered holding games there.”

Are the majority of the people attending games coming from the campus on a Saturday? And why is traffic greater on Saturday than during the week? What does being 30 minutes or more from the stadium have to do with considering a first class facility for home football games.

I would venture to say that the low attendence would make the more expensive Pro Player stadium prohibitive. Do a lot of wealthy MU alums live in Miami? Miami like Durham NC, it is a good place to be from — as in far away from.

Hey chill out guys we on the same team. We’ve had some good coaches and bad coaches in the past. Earl Edwards showed us what tenure and new facilties could do. He lost more than he won but with upgrades in his later years heck he almost won a national chamionship. We got to stay the course we have upgraded but we need to keep building. Right now I see us at 57K seating, with fan base, money, and BCS conference program we should be a top 35 program consistently. With some more money building, we need to get to the 70K seating capacity then we move up a tier and then maybe one day we could shoot for the 100K seating type program like a Michigan or Tenn. Then maybe Tenn and other shcool won’t steal away most of the top recruits in the western part of NC. I think Amato is very aware of the difference in the top ten programs nationally and we were are. We are not there yet even with our recent improvements. But we only get there as a united front. And I think Amato is right we getting close. Recruiting is better. We’ve hired top assistants. Everybody critized out DC but he’s turned out well. Here no one critizing him. And everyone agrees it takes a year or two to really install an offense and Trestman seems close to doing that. He’s a smart fellow. We win some close games dwon the strecth and with the steam we are picking up in recruiting we could have a some special teams next couple of years. We really a young team. All are major skill players on offense are not seniors and we got a young defense. Our major concern is offensive line, yet we have some young guys stepping up. But with Miami’s collapse and Chapel Hill being themselves. Amato and staff might just rack up some big time recruits here locally and in Fl. I think both schools going to have major defections on those soft verbals. Remember Amato’s area when he at FSU was South Florida. Plus I live in Charlotte area and State has really stepped up their presence in this area which is great considering best NC High school football is around Charlotte now. I got a feeling we on the verge of a major upswing. Our problem has been quarterback. Look at Tech, good defense but inconsistent play at the QB has hurt them last couple of years. Sound fimiliar.

Hey Big Daddy Wolf, if no one listens why do fools like you care? Maybe you prefer Pravda and the ways of the KGB to freedom. Grow up buddy!

  21. CaptainCraptacular 10/19/2006 at 4:13 PM #

^*I would venture to say that the low attendence would make the more expensive Pro Player stadium prohibitive. *

This makes sense and would explain why aren’t they playing there more so than distance. Or it could be the history of the Orange Bowl and the nostalgia there that they don’t want to leave. Or some combination of all of the above. One could argue that if general student attendance accounts for a large enough % of the average Orange Bowl crowd, especially for not-so-big games, that distance from campus might sway the casual student not to go. Don’t know if Miami students get free tickets to the games or not though. Whether or not student attendance would make any difference to the university admin about where they play their games is debatable however.

I bump into about 4 or 5 Miami alums at work now and then (very large office). When I see them, I will ask their take on why they aren’t playing at Pro Player.

  22. CaptainCraptacular 10/19/2006 at 4:22 PM #

^*And why is traffic greater on Saturday than during the week?*

Should have clarified that a little better. On game days normal traffic is less, but traffic getting in and out of a lot of stadiums slows to a crawl and adds a lot of time. Alltell stadium in Jax and Ray Jay in Tampa are particularly bad to get out of and get moving on the highway.

Not that this is important to the other discussion.

  23. Woof Wolf 10/19/2006 at 5:14 PM #

“Dolphin Stadium,” not Pro Player any more.

UM thought about playing home games up there, but the parole officers would not approve them leaving the local jurisdiction twelve weekends in a row.

  24. Wolfpack4ever 10/19/2006 at 11:48 PM #

Big Daddy Wolf Says: “Amato, Fowler, Lowe, and Sendek have all commented how sites like this are unhealthy and do not help or encourage our growth in Athletics. So why not do what is in the best interest of NC state and shut down this gossip site.”

Blogs sites are in their relative infancy IMNSHO and are evolving. I find this site to be both a great source of give and take on the subject I love best — NC State football — and a place where the ignorant can let people know they are. Some other sites are entertaining and funny. Some are for people who have ever-dosed on Viagra and have a hard on for someone or something.

I think in time blogs sites will even out and become more mainstream with people stepping up and openly disaggreeing with the Viagra group. Ultimately, all sides of issues will get aired and that is a good thing. Organizing my thoughts and expressing them is a challenge for me and I use this blog site as an opportunity to keep this old, slow to function, mind active.

I will say that some of the brain farts here are so loud and foul that I can smell them through my CRT.

  25. 74eegrad 10/20/2006 at 5:00 PM #

I have lived in south Florida for over 20 years and I remember several times that UM has talked of playing at Joe Robbie( a.k.a. Pro Player, Dolphins) Stadium. The Orange Bowl has some kind of an attraction to UM fans, even though it is far past its prime. It’s similar to the way Reynolds is for some of us. (Don’t get me wrong; Reynolds has never been the dump the OB is and some of my best memories are from nights at Reynolds.) Also, the city of Miami wants the ‘canes in the Orange Bowl, and will rent it to them cheap. If the ‘canes were to leave it, the city would have to tear it down, because no one else will play there. I’ve been to a few games there and it is completely worn out with few parking areas that are safe. If the ‘pack plays the ‘canes there, I’ll watch on TV.
