Truth & Rumor: Cowher in Light Blue? (Key Update @ 2:30pm)

From Sports Illustrated through the Philadelphia Daily News:

“A few folks in Pittsburgh think Bill Cowher is ready to walk away from the Steelers and could resurface at one of those Carolina schools, because his children are older and his wife is from down that way.”

Let’s play the “what if” game for a moment. (And, please don’t bother posting comments that proclaim as fact things that you know nothing about like, “not going to happen”, etc).

Based on the premise that many, many, many people truly believe that this is going to be Bill Cowher’s last year with the Pittsburgh Steelers, then let’s ASSUME for a moment that Cowher feels like he has had his run in NFL Football and is ready for a change.

In our humble opinion, the real question then becomes, “does Cowher want any time-off in between NFL Football and his next gig? or does he want to jump right into something?

So, WHAT IF these aforementioned items line-up to create a situation where the truth is that Bill Cowher is retiring from the NFL and immediately wants a new challenge on the college level?

With this saidwhat if UNC-CH approaches Cowher with their currently open position to discuss their job. What becomes of NC State’s chances to land its ultimate football coaching prize? Could you imagine?

Is there ANY reason to think that Lee Fowler is doing anything other than preparing for his next media interview or writing his next open letter to publicly criticize NC State’s fans and defend the existing status quo in Raleigh until his last breath?

Our take is very, very, very simply —

IF HE WANTS IT, the NC State Football coaching job should be Bill Cowher’s for the taking. Whenever he wants it. Period. No questions asked.

For the future of NC State Football, we think that ^this message must be appropriately delivered to Coach Cowher and his people in the most careful and strategic manner possible (if it hasn’t already).

Chuck Amato has had more than ample time to establish a better-than-mediocre program at NC State. Although Amato has done an excellent job when judged against many metrics, nobody can make a legitimate case that Amato has been successful enough in separating State from the pack to earn himself a label of ‘untouchable’ under all circumstances. Quite the opposite.

Please note that at this point in time we IN NO WAY support firing Chuck Amato under any circumstance other than the circumstance where Bill Cowher says that he wants the job. We warn you to be VERY CAREFUL about our comments. We are NOT suggesting that NC State fire Chuck Amato and try to replace him with Bill Cowher; we are suggesting that (at this time) you only fire Chuck Amato if you already have it arranged to replace him with Bill Cowher.

Bill Cowher is the primary reason why we think that ALL NC State fans need to be VERY CAREFUL about any calls for Amato’s job now or in the near future. You need to let all of these moving parts play themselves out or you may be very sad that you get what wished for.

Like he has publicly stated in Pittsburgh newspapers at various times in the last fifteen years, what if Bill Cowher truly wants to end his career coaching football at NC State but wants to take one year off before coming back to coaching? If those of you that so desperately want Amato gone got your wish, then you would have missed on landing Bill Cowher all because of your zeal for change and lack of strategic thinking. Heck, it would be ‘inversely identical’ strategic blunder that Lee Fowler made five years ago by not firing Herb Sendek before the likes of Rick Barnes and John Calipari got so rooted and entrenched in their current situations that they became significantly more difficult to land.

It looks like NC State’s long anticipated “Bill Cowher situation” may be evolving into play. It also looks like the potential situation will require nimble movement, proactive management, strategic thinking and big balls. Unfortunately for all of us, our Athletics Director is Lee Fowler and our chancellor hasn’t proven an ability to face one ounce of controversy or resistance with anything remotely resembling a spine.

…with Carolina’s job currently open…this could be a very interesting few months.

Allow me to play the role of Devil’s advocate on this one.

Suppose LF actually did what you suggested and told Cowher the job was his if he wanted it. I think Cowher is such a classy guy that he wouldn’t respond to the offer because he wouldn’t want to push his former coach and fellow alumnus out of a job. The only reason our athletic department should approach Cowher at this point in time would be to offer him a more attractive contract than another school if he gets an offer from somewhere else.

SFN, any insight about this new point guard Lowe signed today?

  3. Woof Wolf 10/26/2006 at 9:34 PM #

What I know is: He’s a Jr., class of ’08. Verbally comitted but can’t sign until next year. Rivals has him as an unranked three star. If Sid made him an offer at this point, I’ll bet he turns out a lot higher than that.

To speak to the wisdom of tooyoungtoremember regarding Cowher as a class act. I agree with that perspective and think that same logic would apply to the UNC job. Why would he take the job as Chuck’s archnemesis, put untold pressure on Chuck, not to mention possibly hastening the departure of his old coach and devastate the fanbase he played college ball for?

I’ve never had the privilege of meeting the man, but everything about his public persona leads me to the impression he would respectfully decline the feelers from the ‘Holes. He’s about family in Football as well as life, and WE are part of his football family. Speaking of family, maybe Bill misses his and might want to enjoy them for a while. It would be out of character for a coach to sit out very long, but I consider that more likely than him taking UNC up on their offer.

I would be shocked frankly if Fowler had the foresight to have some form of gentleman’s agreement with Cowher to bide his time until Chuck is ready to pasture. What may be more likely is that Chuck had a grand scheme the whole time to build the foundation and then nobly step out of the way for Bill in a couple of years to take us to the mountaintop. Nahh I’m dreaming. That would be genius.

Cowher would be perfect for State, I just don’t get why in the hell he would want to coach again at the college level, especially here or down the road in Chapel Hell. If he was a well-respected NFL assistant, or struggling with the pro game, maybe. Besides the obvious money difference, college coaching seems a much harder job. Although the season is shorter, the recruiting process is for all practical purposes is a full time job. Then you have to go thru the whole “learn how to play the game, the new system, etc” with basically kids who in MOST cases were coached by High School coaches who don’t have a clue. Then the big money alumni to satisfy and the occasional idiot AD. Isn’t this just dreaming from both us and the boys in baby blue?

I just read an article about PG BBall Recruit Julius Mays from class of 08′.

Mays is 6-foot-2, and believed that he could develop into the best prospect Indiana has to offer from the Class of 2008. Mays’ has two sisters, 1- 6-foot-3 and the other 6-foot-0, his father is 6-foot-5 and his mom is tall. The fact that he is a scorer and pure shooter kept being repeated in the article i read.

Looks like a promising catch for us.

what’s funny is how you guys know what cowher is thinking and wants to do in the future.

  8. graywolf 10/27/2006 at 7:57 AM #

I don’t really think this will happen, but if it were to happen then I would be extremely disappointed in Coach Cowher. I he learned anything at NC State it should be that Carolina is your rival. I wish CTC would get a clue about this.

  9. BoKnowsNCS71 10/27/2006 at 8:04 AM #

82 Grad — what’s funny is that 6-7 years after he’s here — the same people will be calling for his head. Go figure.

First of all, this article is “rational whimsy.” It’s like imaging the end of one of those lines of dominos where one knocks the other down. Sure, you can imagine it, but until a bunch of others dominos fall, it’s an academic exercise and nothing more.

First, Cowher has to leave the Steelers.

Second, Amato must leave either by choice or by demand.

Third, Cowher must be interested in coaching 1A football in college.

Fourth, Cowher must get an offer suitable to him.

And so forth and so on. Likely? Not today. Possible? Absolutely.

An AD has to be a master of chess — a game where good players review the scenarios three moves ahead, and are prepared for any eventuality. It’s also said that should a coach leave, a good AD has three names he’s immediately contact about the job. For Lee Fowler, that list absolutely must have Bill Cowher on it. It would be insane if it did not.

Finally, people, take this article for what it’s worth, supposition and “what-ifs.” In fact, that’s the headline for the entry. On Scooby-Doo, they’d call that “a clue.”

What hasn’t been talked about here is…

IF HE WANTS IT, the NC State Atheletic Director job should be Bill Cowher’s for the taking. Whenever he wants it. Period. No questions asked.

Just to correct a list of NFL head coaches that move to college:

Charlie Weiss never a head coach. NE Pats , OC
DAVID Shula, not Mike, was coach of the Bengals

^^ what about Bill Callahan at Nebraska?

Aren’t Cowher and Amato tight? Didn’t Cowher lobby for Amato to get the job in the first place? Isn’t this common knowlege or am I totally misinformed.

Not considering what Cowher’s personal desires are, I can’t seem him taking the HC job unless Amato retires. This whole conversation seems a little ridiculous.

  17. wolfonthehill 10/27/2006 at 9:30 AM #

NC State is stagnant. We did not hire Amato to “build” a stagnant program. Agreed that IF Cowher made it clear that he wanted to be our head coach, there are plenty of valid reasons for letting Amato go.

  18. Wulfpack 10/27/2006 at 9:43 AM #

Jerome Bettis thinks Cowher will be leaving the Steelers at the end of the season. That means Cowher will be moving to Raleigh to be with the rest of his family. That means Cowher, a football coach, and a darn good one at that, is going to get very very bored. I do not think it’s a stretch for him to be coaching college football in the triangle in the near future. May not be this year, but certainly a possibility for the future.

As for the whole UNC/NCSU thing, the way I feel about it is first come, first served. I wouldn’t think Cowher would be the type of man to lobby for a job currently held by Amato. If UNC speaks to him, our athletic director who should go un-named b/c he doesn’t do a damn thing had better be on the phone shortly after. Hell how about right now?

  19. forst8 10/27/2006 at 2:08 PM #

I think the point of being careful what we wish for is very relevant. If we lose to UNC this year along with losing several additional games, the cry for Amato to be replaced might be very intense. Does that fit BC’s timeframe (if he has one)? If not, we could wind up with a new coach that isn’t named BC.

just wanted to back up what beowolf was stating earlier.. this should have been conveyed to cowher and associates years ago!!!!

  21. cfpack03 10/27/2006 at 3:50 PM #

Head coach, AD, on the board, hell even chancellor. just get him here

  22. redfred2 10/27/2006 at 7:27 PM #

I don’t see Cowher as AD just yet, but who knows. There is no door even in the way to stop him as far as I’m concerned.

Hasn’t there been much discussion about MOC recently? Wasn’t he once the HC at NCSU? Isn’t he also an assistant now, and hasn’t he been ever since those days at NCSU? As for Amato, his stock as a HC is no where close to being solvent. His position is shaky at best, and in jeopardy as we speak. Not that LF would ever pull the trigger but I don’t know, maybe there is a place for both Amato and Cowher in Raleigh.

Hell, if it worked out, Lee could even stick around.

  23. redfred2 10/27/2006 at 8:57 PM #

I don’t know if Amato loves NCSU enough to do that, but with everything he has accomplished beyond the football field itself, it would be tough and a shame to see him leave, Cowher or not. But if both could somehow work, Amato at DC, with those skills intact, all of his enthusiam for the program and bonafide recruiting skills still cultivating the talent, then see Cowher easing into the HC position more as overall management.

That is a dream that is possibly too good to be true for a Wolfpack fan. Who knows? Sidney Lowe and staff are setting the table over on the hardwood. Maybe this is the beginning of a renaissance in Raleigh.

Hell, if it worked out, Lee could even stick around.

  24. redfred2 10/28/2006 at 10:21 AM #

Is the agricultural department still working on that top secret and heavily funded project to crossbreed a holstein cow with a humming bird, in order to send the eventual offspring sailing over the moon?

Hell, if it worked out, Lee could even stick around.

you guys need to let go of this absurd Cowher fixation….
who’d want to work twice (or more) times as hard in collegeball as the pros for (probably) half the pay??

    wishful thinking!
